Author: KatherineDBenbow Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.guilford/4307.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Unless you have some information that connects her to Guilford, I don't understand why you're posting on the Guilford board. As far as I know, there is no community in Guilford by either name. Powell's North Carolina Gazetteer gives the following information: Cranberry, community in north central Avery County. There are several Cranberry Creeks in the state, one in west Avery County, one in north Jackson County, one in SE Watauga County, and the one I know, in west Yadkin County. That is the closest one to Guilford. As for the name Blue Ridge, Powell lists a community named Blue Ridge in east Henderson County. Of course, we have the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, and the name is picked up and used in various ways in that part of the state. Guilford County, by the way, is in the central piedmont, and it is not near the Blue Ridge Mountains. The closest access to them from Guilford is to go NW to the northern boundary of Surry County and the NC/VA border. That's a considerable distance for someone in the 1820's. There is a Cranberry Ridge listed in north Jackson County between Cranberry Creek and Hornbuckle Creek. I am assuming that is a mountain, since Powell doesn't call it a community. Yadkin County was created in 1850 from Surry County, which was created in 1771 from Rowan, one of Guilford's parent counties. As for the sometimes complicated genealogy of the rest of these counties (because you won't find records for anyone in a county that didn't exist at the time), you need to go here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/countyfm.htm While there was a Mitchell family in early Guilford, it is not an uncommon name. You need to figure out first where your Mitchell family was living or could have been living, and which county would hold their records for that time frame. For instance, have you checked to see what counties had Mitchell households in the 1820 census? Land records and court records can be very helpful. Good luck. Can you help me further identify the Stone line from Elizabeth. My informatin states that she married a Rufus MacDonald Morgan in 1858. I am trying to trace him, but am wondering if there is possibly any of the Stones still in the area that may be able to assist me so I wanted to make sure my dates were correct. I have that Burgess b. 1765 Polly b. 1769 Dudley 3/29/1805 and they married 1/16/30 in Rockingham NC and he died in 1884. All other names are the same.. any thoughts to the confusion? 3. Is it too much to ask that persons responding with thanks for information and other messages not containing genealogical information respond directly to the individual and not to all of us on the web site? I am overloaded with messages which contain no information which helps anyone with their genealogy. I know how easy it is to simply click on "reply" without addressing the person who sent in the information in the first place. On the other hand you overload the in-box when it means nothing to us. Sincerely David Huffines

    1. Re: [NCGUILFO] GURLEY
    2. Betty, We have one Gourley...have tried for years to determine his ancestry. Will give you what little we know. Perhaps he was one of Joe's siblings.... John1 Gourley was born Abt. 1837 in MS, and died 11 Dec 1862 in Battle of Fredericksburg, VA. He married Henrietta Margaret Hemingway 22 Jan 1861 in Madison Co., MS, Record Book H, page 26, daughter of William Hemingway and Henrietta Child. She was born 02 Apr 1836 in York District, South Carolina, and died 03 Mar 1917 in Camden, Madison Co., MS. Notes for John Gourley: In the 1860 Madison Co., MS Census, August 11, 1860, John is working for Henrietta's father, William, as a farm laborer. He is 31 years old and he reported in the census that he was born in South Carolina. John enlisted into the Confederate Army on March 14, 1862 at Thomastown, MS. He received a bounty of $40 for joining. This unit became part of the 21 MS Regiment, Co. G. Per CSA records, John was 'killed instantly by shell at Fredericksburg, December 11, 1862.' Child of John Gourley and Henrietta Hemingway is: i. Henrietta2 Gourley, b. 01 Nov 1862, Mississippi; d. 14 Nov 1862, Kirkwood Cemetery, Madison County, MS. How John died is actually a bit of family lore. John was first husband of Henrietta. John served with his good friend, George Mitchell. During the Battle of Fredericksburg, John was killed when a cannonball blew his head off. George witnessed this horrible tragedy. After the war, George returned to Mississippi to tell Henrietta of John's death, but withheld the gory details as to how. Eventually, George and Henrietta married and had 13 children. For years after the war, George suffered what we would call today post traumatic stress syndrome, or PTSD. Back then it was called 'the melancholies' He had constant nightmares about his horrible experiences during the war. He never did tell Henrietta how her beloved John died, and carried it to his grave. George and Henrietta are my greatgreatgrandparents..... Hope this helps.... r/Steven -------------- Original message -------------- From: BettyL2@aol.com > > I am researching "GURLEY's : GOURLEY and any other spelling of the name > before 1900 in NorthCarolina.. > > I am trying to match up these family naming trends and find once and for > all my Great grandparents . > > If you have " Gurleys" in your family send me a chart and I am going to > put them in my data base.. > > My main line is Henry and Elizabeth Gurley born in early 1800's.. from > their son Joe I have limited info on the sibling s...but will be happy to > share what I have > > > > > > > > > " Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying > about your age, and start bragging about it. 1. Re: [NCGUILFO] 1810 Guilford Co. census translation
    2. There is a Thomas Gossett on that same page of the census. Deeds can be helpful. There were a lot of Brown families in the area, but there was only one Gossett family in the county in the early years, so that's an easier angle to try. Any Brown mentioned in a Gossett deed is likely to be the right one. This is the closest association of Gossett and Brown that I could find to the date of 1810. If you research the deeds that mention James Brown and plat the land, you may be able to figure out if he's the right man. I've just taken one stab at it. You'd need to work on this for a while to confirm the possibility. >From Dr. A. B. Pruitt's "Abstracts of Deeds, Guilford Co., NC, Books 7, 8, & 9," privately published 2003, copyright A. B. 3. I thought so to, but on pg. 155b Joseph is wrote out. And James is too.And James is wrote out on the same pg. 156b. But, I'm wondering if it is the same person that wrote out the whole censes. If not, then I would think it might be Joseph or James.
