The Quaker Roots mailing list went through a whole discussion on this issue in August and September of this year. Rather than repeat all or part of that here, it would be good for anyone interested to visit this list of archives, and read the linked and threaded messages. _http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/QUAKER-ROOTS/_ (http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/QUAKER-ROOTS/) Some people try to simplify this into one reason that would apply to everyone. I do not agree with that. One or more reasons may have motivated any one family group. And, while groups of members of Quaker congregation may have shared one common purpose, individual economic and family considerations may well have entered into the decisions made as well. To me, the interesting part would be trying to discover and/or form a theory about the reasons that motivated your particular ancestors. There are some very interesting stories about what motivated certain members of the Benbow family, and those need to be preserved and passed on. I see some people trying to apply a "one size fits all" mentality to this issue, and I think a great deal is lost when someone takes this approach. I'm not blaming the person who asked this question. I'm just urging others not to cite one and only one reason for the migration. That is a superficial approach and should be avoided. One always has to allow for the phonetic spellings of the county clerks. If you're not doing this already, you probably need to search records for various forms of that surname. I believe the variations that are most common in the Guilford records are Perdue and Pardue and Perdew. The marriage bondsman was Saml. Heath, so that won't help you in terms of clues for her family. Try wills and estates, and then land records -- although land records often help more with the sons than the daughters. Also, remember that Guilford County was created in 1771 from a section of Rowan and a section of Orange, and it would be wise to check records for those jurisdictions as well. I am a Heath descendant, from Smith Heath, who died in Guilford County in 1816. During my research I have found that people moved for more and better land, land grants for service in the Revolutionary War, and the slavery issue was a big cause also. One of the big routes was through the mountains where VA and NC meet, then into TN and up through KY. One thing that I relearnd about American history was that Daniel Boone, and others like him were not the wandering explorers that they were portrayed to be. They were mercenaries, and went West to find home sites for other people for a fee. If you trace different lines they all seem to go from VA down through central NC and over into Western VA, Eastern TN and then North or West. All up through KY into OH, and IN is populated with people from VA, and NC. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are several people posted on this Guilford County NCGenWeb page _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/lookups.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/lookups.html) as people willing to do look-up's. As for the Register of Deeds, I sent through a message about that website a few months ago, and that message gave the reasons for the temporary suspension of the online system. I talked to the director then, and he put me in his database so that he could let me know when the vital records system is back online. So far I haven't heard anything, and it looks like it's still not up. I found a list of post offices for Guilford County, and I posted that to the website on a separate page. Then I decided that I needed to go beyond that, and I've spent a good chunk of time over the last several days setting up a new page for the Guilford County NCGenWeb site, which has a gazetteer of geographical names associated with the county. I am still adding to it, so it certainly isn't complete, and the website's search engine won't incorporate the contents until the search engine runs its weekly update sometime in the next 24 hours or so. However, I thought I'd go ahead and post notice about this. If you have any names you'd like to see defined and added, please let me know. Hopefully, I won't be buried in an avalanche of those! I have gone over my NC atlas section on Guilford, but I haven't pulled out my county map book yet. And I can see some names on the Hughes map of early settlers that aren't in the atlas, so I'll have to tackle all of those as well. What I'd like to do is build a page that can be used as a resource when working in land records for the county. For now, I am trying to stick to the territory that is currently Guilford and wasn't cut off to form Randolph or Rowan counties from "Old Guilford County." And, while including some lakes that were man-made during the early 1900's, I will try to leave out anything from 1950 on. If you know the history of the feature's name, or anything about name changes, that would be helpful. But please do remember to cite all known sources for any information. And, for those who like to laugh at the name, yes, Stinking Quarter Creek is on the list. The website's gazetteer page is here: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/Gazetteer.html_ (http://www.roo tsweb.com/~ncguilfo/Gazetteer.html) You'll find both that page and the post office page linked to the main index page, in the section that has local history and maps. The post office list has been incorporated into the gazetteer page, so there's no particular need to check that list separately. But I do need to investigate some probable misspellings in that list, which I obtained from another source given to me in a USGenWeb newsletter. I suspect that "Bloomimton" is actually "Bloomington." And surely "Gilher's Store" would be "Gilmer's Store." Anyone know anything about either place? I thought I'd let the list know that Dr. A. B. Pruitt recently published another book of deed abstracts for Guilford County. This newest one in his series is on Deed Books 19, 20, & 21, covering 1825 to 1836. If you are interested in ordering this or any other publication from him, you can find the information here: _http://home.earthlink.net/~abpruitt/_ (http://home.earthlink.net/~abpruitt/) I saw Bruce at the North Carolina Genealogical Society annual meeting and conference this past weekend, and I told him to please keep working on the Guilford series! His website includes this informative article on land grants in NC from 1777-1800: _http://home.earthlink.net/~abpruitt/id9.html_ (http://home.earthlink.net/~abpruitt/id9.html) Bruce presented a lecture on this subject at the 2005 NGS conference in Nashville, and I daresay he'll present another one at the 2009 NGS conference in Raleigh (May 13-16). He and Margaret Hofmann are the leading authorities on NC land records.
