    1. Re: [NCGUILFO] marriage bonds
    2. Thanks for the feedback! I'm getting a definite "yes!" from the group. I've been toying with this idea for some time, as I want to go beyond just a list of names and the date of the bond. I will set up the pages to handle this over the next few days, but I'll have to keep working on those over the coming weeks. This is my Christmas present to the list. (wink) I will send the mailing list another e-mail with the links to the pages, and information regarding guidelines for contributions for the pages. I have taken digital images of the bonds for my own family line, but I obviously don't have all bonds. And I don't want to chew up too much server space while keeping things legible, so let me play with this a bit, and then I'll let you know when you can start sending anything you want to contribute, and what approximate size the files should be for those. I do have photo software, so I can crop or downsize a file if I need to do that. PDF versions of scans are also acceptable, but I can't alter those. And some items will scan into Word documents, etc. As long as it's true to the original, and legible, I will try to work with it. For anyone heading to the State Archives in the next week or so, and who wants to collect something to send in, you can take a digital camera and use it (without flash) to take a photo of individial marriage bonds. Try to get an image of the reverse side as well. Scanners were not allowed in the Search Room the last time I checked. I'll also accept scans of photocopies, or good images from microfilm. I like the digital photos better, since those show the wonderful color tones of the ink and the paper, but photocopies will still allow people to view the actual bonds and handwriting for themselves. Gradually, I'd like to have digital photos of all bonds, but that will take time. The idea for now would be to list the known bonds, and then link names to the images as we acquire those in the system. The next time I go to Raleigh, I'll try to get a copy of the list of bonds they have there and compare it against the lists that are on the library website and in other locations. I also need to double-check and see if there are any still at the Guilford courthouse. Just as a reminder, keep in mind that the date of the bond is not necessarily the date of the marriage, or even absolute proof of a marriage. I will address that issue further at the top of the pages. 1. [NCGUILFO] Samford University IGHR for 2008
    2. I just have to let my favorite mailing list know about this. Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, has an annual Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research. I have been there four consecutive times, and I will return again 2008. It is my favorite genealogy experience of the year. The quality of the faculty is top-notch, and the course offerings vary some from year to year, with the basics repeating, and with other choices alternating every 2-3 years. Check "Future Institutes" for that information. You might want to take a peek at this and see if you're interested: _http://www.samford.edu/schools/ighr/index.html_ (http://www.samford.edu/schools/ighr/index.html) Enrollment opened over the weekend, and I am one of the early birds who signed up as soon as the e-mail notice came out. Some courses will have slots in a few months, but the majority will fill up this winter. While I greatly enjoy NGS conferences, this is a wonderfully different kind of experience. It involves 4.5 days of classes on one central theme, with the main course coordinator teaching the bulk of the material, and other faculty taking turns in other courses for an hour or two to discuss their particular areas of expertise. If you have any questions, you can e-mail or call the IGHR staff. The course limits are firm limits. I can answer questions as a veteran student. I've taken the following courses: Intermediate Genealogy Land Records: Platting Metes and Bound Writing and Publishing Virginia: Her Records and Her Laws In 2008 I'll be taking the second part of Barbara Vines Little's series on Virginia: Virginia's Land and Miltiary Conflicts and Their Effect on Migration. Author: kycady Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.guilford/4323/mb.ashx Message Board Post: We are engaged in an on-going genealogical and historical research project focused on the Civil War Unionists of Alabama. Two volumes have been published, a third is soon to be released, and nine more volumes are planned. Details of the project scope are at http://www.civilwarunionistsofalabama.com/. Each volume of our series includes a mix of general history of southern population migration, Native American involvement, local Alabama folklore, and Civil War activity in Alabama but also in the other southern states if there is an Alabama connection. We hope that this portion of our series will be of interest to anyone with a Civil War history or Southern connection. To keep the massive amount of available data manageable, the genealogy portion is more closely confined to Unionists from Alabama who served in the Union Armies either in "named" Alabama regiments or in regiments mustered in other states, as many did. If you have genealogical data, local history, photographs, etc, related to the subject, we would like to hear from you at jsmbooks@comcast.net or reply to this message board.
