    2. I've been just been sitting in on this discussion until now. I believe it can truly be said in regard to tombstone records that "carved in stone" means?perhaps more lasting but?not necessarily more accurate than other forms of records. 2. Very true. The stonecarver put the wrong month on my father's marker, and my mother let him "fix" it. It's only 35 years later, and the "fix" has just about chipped out, turning "July" back into "June." Never believe anything without verifying it with multiple sources. That's one of the reasons I want to post images or copies of the actual bonds. Anyone doing a book of abstracts can make errors. We're certainly all human. 1. [NCGUILFO] to BenbowKD
    2. (1) a list of the marriage bonds for Guilford between 1771 and 1868, and (2) links to images of the actual bonds, from digital photos or photocopies of those? What a terrific idea.......yes, please........ Also it would be great for me, at least, to see lists of the cemeteries. And if there is anywhere a list of people in those cemeteries, I'd be ecstatic..........have been looking for a grandmother but have so little to be on except Guilford Co and a death date of 8/27/1813. Thanks for everyone's thoughtfulness in this gen business.....I love it.....phd

    1. Re: [NCGUILFO] Marriage Banns
    2. Technically, these are marriage bonds and not marriage banns. I'm still polishing this page, but see this page for more information: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/VitalRecords.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/VitalRecords.html) The only records that were required to be kept before 1868 were the bonds. And not all survive, and reading the banns in church generally side-stepped the need for a marriage bond. As for pictures, you made a kind offer, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. As it is, I start a new job next week, which is a little nutty to do right before Christmas, but I think I'll be much happier there than where I've been. I'd suggest that you send a message through the mailing list and/or message boards to find others who might be interested. I believe that there is a website called "Dead Fred" which specializes in this kind of thing. _http://www.deadfred.com/_ (http://www.deadfred.com/) Also, you can now post some files as attachments to postings on the Rootsweb message boards. Have you tried that? I appreciate your suggestion, and I'll keep this in mind for the future, but right now marriage bonds have a higher priority -- with me -- for server space than some other things. I try to focus on what will be the most valuable to the greatest number of people. Katherine Benbow **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. 2. Rick, I've also done some looking around since sending that, and yes, it is an incomplete list for sure. That's rather a disappointment. Seems I'll just have to take a day-trip to Raleigh sometime soon and get that list I want. In the meantime, I'll start uploading images of bonds, as soon as I get the pages set up, and I'll add info on others as well. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to do it without ending up feeling like I have a tiger by the tail. 3. There are a some sites that link tombstone listings to pictures. I think the best of these is Find A Grave. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi A person can request a picture of a tombstone, and then an e-mail about the request is sent to volunteers within 10 miles of the cemetery. In another NC county, I requested a couple copies of pictures of tombstones that I knew existed, because my grandfather had taken grainy pictures of them back in the 1950s. A volunteer not only photographed those, but about 500 other tombstones in the cemetery (that is not the norm). I agree about preserving photos of early tombstones. I have requested a number of photos from various locations of tombstones of ancestors and their siblings, concentrating on the earliest ones. From readings that were taken by people 30 or 40 years ago (especially small family cemeteries), volunteers that have gone to some of the cemeteries today have not been able to find the requested tombstone among those readable, and/or find piles of broken tombstones. Without the photographic record, future researchers have to depend on the readings done in the past. I have also received some pictures which are very clear, and show that published readings done in the past had some errors in dates. Although I have numerous Guilford County ancestors, they all either left before they died, or tombstones do not survive. At least I have not found them in either GCGS publications or in the NC pre-1914 Cemetery Survey. Rick Saunders No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. And if there is anywhere a list of people in those cemeteries, I'd be ecstatic..........have been looking for a grandmother but have so little to be on except Guilford Co and a death date of 8/27/1813. ------------------------ I do have a list of cemeteries on the county website, cross-referenced to the publication that would have the list of burials. There are undoubtedly a few cemeteries which have escaped notice to date, but I think the majority of them have been catalogued. As for a list of the people buried in those cemeteries, again, we run into copyright issues. GCGS has published several books on the burials in the cemeteries in the area, and I can't copy from those. If you visit the county website, you will find the names of a few people who can do look-up's for you. Until someone or some group of people come forward and volunteer to start doing their own readings of the cemeteries, I doubt I can do much more. I don't have the time to do that myself. If someone volunteers, please give me the readings from left to right, one row at a time, so we can preserve an idea of physical proximity between those of different surnames. That can be very helpful. I will say that one of the things I am contemplating for 2008 is setting up a very limited experiment in terms of gathering data and photos on the earlier burials in Guilford. And I do mean "early." Guilford is a heavily populated county, and the burials must run well into 6 figures by now. Stop and think about whether you'd want to tackle that project. Guilford is not a rural county! I've actually already done a little experimenting with a page or two, as I have my own photos and data, collected on trips to Guilford (I live an hour away), that I can use without infringing on GCGS copyrights. Let me get this marriage bond project up and running, and get through the holidays. In the meantime, please use the look-up's. I'll announce when I am ready to tackle the next project. 1. Re: [NCGUILFO] marriage bonds
    2. We'll do this list alphabetically. That is my preference, and the preference of everyone else so far, but the Cabarrus County site (I took that over this past summer) has them listed chronologically, so I thought I'd check. While I am getting these pages set up, and then gathering images to link to them, I want to make people aware that I was hesitant to do this until I realized that there is an internet source for the marriage bond list: _http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/Departments/Library/OnlineResources/genealogy/ma rriageresults.htm?Branch=bond_ (http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/Departments/Library/OnlineResources/genealogy/marriageresults.htm?Branch=bond) This list does include some from a Clemens publication on NC & SC marriages, so they apparently used multiple sources. I just stumbled across this list on the library's website earlier this week. It doesn't show the bondsmen and witnesses, but it will help some of you find some names and dates while I get the Guilford County NCGenWeb pages set up. One of my concerns in the past was not cutting into the sales of Guilford County Genealogical Society publications, or running into copyright issues. GCGS has published a set of two volumes on marriage bonds. But I also think there is a crying need to have these available, and I also think that the images themselves are extremely helpful. Some people don't realize what is -- and what is not! -- on the marriage bond itself. So I have wanted for a long time to have a way to share the actual images with others. They are such an important resource when working in early Guilford records. If the library had not posted the list of bonds, I might have hesitated a while longer. But now there are multiple sources for the basic information. I want to use the images -- and the list from the Archives -- as the ultimate references for the data. I also want others to be able to verify the information for themselves. There's a lot to be learned in the process. In the meantime, may I suggest -- if this makes a difference between your buying the set of Guilford marriage bond abstracts or not -- that you use the money instead to become a member of GCGS? They have an excellent journal, and other publications for sale, and I'd recommend that you find a way to support them. Their website is here: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgcgs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgcgs/) Katherine Benbow **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products.
