    3. Hello PH. The Nantucket Quakers who were in Guilford County, NC are of great interest to me as well. So please keep any discussion on your Macy's....Starbucks.....etc on the mail list. I am interested. One of my big goals this year is to prove that my 3-gr-grandfather, Silas P. Wooten, was married to Phebe Worth.....everyone seems to except this as fact....I feel sure that it is....but I would like just a bit more proof. But at this point, I am accepting it as very probably a true fact. Phebe's 2-gr-grandmother was Sarah Macy married to William Worth. I also believe that Phebe was a descendent of Mary Starbuck of an earlier generation than that of your Mary Starbuck Macy, but I can't find the proofs right this second to say it with conviction. I would also be very interested to know if there is information on grave sites for any of these Nantucket Quakers who were living in NC in the late 1700's to early 1800's. 2. _Ats120897@aol.com_ (mailto:Ats120897@aol.com) writes: James Middleton Lee married Rebecca Self Guilford County North Carolina. abt 1829 ------------- There is a marriage bond for Middleton Lee and Rebecca Self dated 19 May 1829, with John W. Brimm as bondsman and A. E. Hanner as witness. I'll enter the data from this one onto the list, along with the other Lee marriage bonds, and I will be glad to upload the image of the bond, if someone wants to submit it. As noted on the Vital Records page of the website, the date of the marriage bond is not necessarily the date of the marriage, and it is not absolute proof that the marriage took place, without other evidence from another source (which it seems you have). A marriage bond is a very good indication that a marriage took place on or shortly after that date. The marriage records that survive, from ministers' records, indicate that marriages often took place a day or so later, but occasionally it could be up to a few weeks later -- basically similar to today's practice of getting the marriage license a day or few before the actual ceremony. At some point, I'd like to find a good source for the ministers' records and get those onto the website as well. 1. Re: [NCGUILFO] next question --- pages for marriage licenses? -- PS
    2. I want to point out that there are some existing marriage licenses that pre-date 1868. The distinguishing characteristic is the difference in wording and the absence of a financial penalty. So there will be overlap. In other words, there can be both marriage bonds and marriage licenses from about 1851 to 1868, although it is much more common during those years to have marriage bonds than licenses. Still, with the documents being different in their characteristics, I hesitate to blend the two together. 1. [NCGUILFO] next question --- pages for marriage licenses?
    2. Someone who very kindly submitted five marriage bond images also submitted a marriage license image. I had not planned to get into Guilford marriage licenses yet, but are there enough images of those out there in your files to make it worthwhile to set up pages for those, too? Marriage license forms were used in NC starting in 1868 and continuing through today. There is much more information on those, including the names of parents, etc. And the minister's return on the bottom -- if it is filled out -- gives you the actual date and place of the marriage. I would want to put a time range on these, so I don't overload the server. Say, 1868 to 1900? At least for now? There will be more of those than the marriage bonds. I won't go and actively seek these. I'll simply post what is submitted. I have some in my own files at home, for instance. 1. Re: [NCGUILFO] marriage bond requests
    2. Steven, I can't find Marmaduke Mitchell in the grooms' index, or Mary Bradley Tupple/Tuttle in the brides' index. The closest thing I have is a Manfield Mitchell serving as bondsman for the marriage bond of Joab Mitchell and Ann Keter in 1828. Not every couple needed or obtained a marriage bond. It was a requirement only in certain circumstances. Check the Vital Records page on the website for further discussion on marriage bonds vs. banns, etc. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/VitalRecords.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/VitalRecords.html) If the couple were Quakers (I'm not saying these were), there were extremely few Quakers who used the marriage bonds until the middle decades of the 1800's. A marriage bond was one way to avoid the lengthy process of Quaker marriage procedures, and other denominational marriage banns, and that would have viewed with disapproval by the Quaker elders. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but it was rare when it did. You might also try adjoining counties, to see if there is a marriage bond in a nearby county. But there may not be a marriage bond for this couple at all, for any one of various reasons. Sorry. 1. Re: [NCGUILFO] marriage bond requests -- clarification
    2. I did receive one image yesterday, so maybe there are a few more out there. Meanwhile, judging by one response, perhaps I was too specific, and confused people in the process. I want to make dead-sure we're all on the same page here. I don't have immediate access to the bond images themselves, as the bonds themselves are located two hours away in Raleigh. I live an hour away from Guilford, and I also work. I'd love to spend a day every week in the NC Archives -- nothing would make me happier -- but that's not possible. So, in the meantime, while we accumulate more bond images, I will list the personal data from the bond, according to the various abstracts I have on hand. That will allow us to build a list of online data, while still working to acquire images for as many of these bonds as possible. But abstracts can be wrong. One of the reasons to acquire the images is to be aware of the variations, such as the clerk's spelling of a surname one way, and the groom's spelling of it another way. Or whether the groom signed with an "X." That tells you something important about the groom. It's always better to view the actual bond (or any other document) or an image of it. There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of marriage bonds for Guilford County. Some people may have assumed I was going to obtain and post all these images myself. I really do wish I could do that for all of you. But I won't live long enough to do that, although I do come from a long-lived Scots-Irish family, whose members stay active and live at home -- and often die there -- into their 90's and 100's. Besides, I do have my own family research to do, in my few leisure hours. And we all have brick walls to work on. If I don't have a personal family interest in getting a particular bond image myself the next time I go to Raleigh, the person requesting a look-up -- if that person wants to do so -- can pursue the matter in one of a few different ways. Rick Saunders has offered to obtain digital images at a reduced cost if someone makes a contribution to GCGS. That's due in large part to his generosity, and also to the fact that I don't want this project to hurt their revenues. Rick lives and works in Salt Lake City, and can obtain digital images very easily and inexpensively from the microfilm at the Family History Center. Or you can travel to Raleigh yourself, and view your ancestor's bond in person, and obtain a digital image or photocopy. I've done that, and a color digital image shows all the wonderful color tones of the paper and the ink. Or you can find a researcher based in Raleigh and ask them to obtain the desired image for you, whether color digital image or photocopy. Whatever you do, I would appreciate your submitting the image, or a scan of it, to go along with the basic information we have on the website. See the earlier e-mail for details on file size, etc. All I'm trying to do here is find a way to improve the availability of marriage bond information, and I also want to improve the quality of the available data, by creating a way to post the actual images on the website. Images of documents signed by your ancestors are important in a number of different ways, including the fact that you can compare handwriting from one document to another to see if your John Smith on the marriage bond is the same John Smith who signed some other document. Never be satisfied with an abstract when the original document still exists. Questions, anyone? So, I will look up and post the data for one couple per person. I also urge you to go beyond that and obtain the image for a particular bond by whatever means you prefer, and then submit it to Guilford County NCGenWeb, in order to help your cousins out there. 1. Re: [NCGUILFO] marriage bond pages now ready for requests
    2. It seems that no one out there has a marriage bond image for submission.... all the more reason, I guess, to set up website pages with those images. I am going to go ahead and start compiling a "priority list" of marriage bonds that are requested as look-up's. So, can I ask that we start with: one couple per request, and one request per person for now. I don't know how many people are on this mailing list, and I may get an avalanche in response. I'd rather start this way for now, rather than do whole surnames at one time, or I might easily be snowed under. I will make a list of the requests in the order that they come in, and I will take them in that order, working on them as time permits, so it may take a little while to get a response to your request. It does not matter if your request is submitted on or off the mailing list. Some might prefer that it be off-list. I would post the information on the appropriate webpage for the particular surname. If you are looking for a groom, please give me the groom's name, and a date range of 10 or less years (ex., 1800-1810). For example, you might request a look-up for Charles Benbow about 1810-1815. That would go on the "B" page, obviously. If there are two or more by the same name in the same date range, I'll do all of those. If you are looking for a bride, then please give me a range of 10 or less years, and I'll post any brides by that name that I find in that date range -- but that information will be listed by the grooms' surnames. I will let you know which surname pages to check. Please remember that nothing is as good as the image, so do consider trying to get that, instead of being content with information obtained second- or third-hand. 1. [NCGUILFO] Vital Records system for Guilford back online -- but you need to register now
    2. After talking with the Register of Deeds a few months ago about the need to keep some records available online, and his promise to let me know when the system was operational again, I just received a notice from the Register of Deeds today that the Vital Records system, which was taken off the web in July, is now back up. However there is now a registration system, which is what a lot of the local counties have started using. For further information, go to this webpage and look for the link to "vital records abstracts" : _http://www.co.guilford.nc.us/services/index.php_ (http://www.co.guilford.nc.us/services/index.php) That will take you to a page where you can log-in, or click on the link to register. I have started the registration process myself, but it takes either a visit to the R.O.D. office or a mailed form accompanied by a photocopy of an ID. In other words, you won't get to view this stuff before Christmas, unless you live in Greensboro and want to go downtown. For the rest of you, you can start the registration process, and then you will get an e-mail with further instructions and an attachment with the necessary form. We have all the identity thieves in the world to thank for this (!), but at least we're going to be able to access things online again. 1. [NCGUILFO] marriage bond pages now ready for submissions
    2. I mentioned this as a possible project in a message I sent a couple of weeks ago, and got a resounding "YES" as a response. First, let me say that there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of marriage bonds for Guilford, and it will take quite some time to get all onto the website. A few people may have assumed I'd get all of them listed this month, and that certainly isn't going to happen. I have a job and a family! This will be a gradual process, and I have been trying to figure out a way to prioritize things so that the ones which are most desirable to the list members will be the first ones going up. I've spent a good chunk of time over the last couple of weeks setting up the pages to handle this, which involves 23 new pages for the website. I combined P & Q, and U & V, and X, Y & Z. I added a separate page for Mc's, which would include Mac's as well. There are only a few bonds listed on each page so far, but I went ahead and did those to set the HTML format up. This way I don't have to keep dividing pages in the future. In putting a few bonds on each page, I chose some of my own surnames for the most part. I uploaded copies of a few image files I have, which you will find on the B and D and H pages. I will have to hunt through some more files that I have to get some others I know I have. Let's do things in this order: (1) First, for the next week or so, until after Christmas, I'd like to solicit contributions of images that list members may have. If the bond is one that's not listed yet, I'll (obviously) list that one, and I will go ahead and list other bonds for that groom's surname. The image can be a digital photo image, or a scan of a photocopy. Ideally, I'd like to have copies of the bond front and reverse, as there is often a little information on the back as well. I need to keep the size of the files down, so that I won't have a problem with server space. I've played around with this a bit, and I'd like to request that files be 150 KB or less. There's no need to scan at 2400 dpi. I scanned at 200 dpi, and even then I downsized some files further without losing legibility. I do have photo software, if you do not and want to send a larger file. I can crop and reduce the size. But please don't send me a file exceeding a size of 1-2 MB. (2) AFTER I deal with the responses to #1 above, and AFTER I get through Christmas, I will solicit one request per list member for surname look-ups. But, please, I'm not asking for those now! Just wait a couple of weeks. I'll send another message to the list. I plan to spend time over the weekend after Christmas and the weekend after New Year's dealing with those requests. I can't deal with those now. I need to decorate the tree today, and get ready to host the family next week. If you e-mail me now, I'll just lose the request. So, please, wait. I will not be cross-indexing brides' surnames for now. You'll just have to use the FreeFind search feature to find those. That search system updates itself every Saturday morning. Also, I will be listing only the data that is actually on the bond. I will not list anything that is based on conclusions, such as who the parents might be, etc. That is for researchers to confirm with their own independent research. * * * * * In the meantime, Rick Saunders, who is a professional genealogist, has made a very kind offer. He can obtain images for individuals through his access to the microfilm at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, and he has offered to do that at a reduced rate if the person making the request makes a donation to the Guilford County Genealogical Society. Contact him for further details. You will find the link to his e-mail address after the table of links to the bond pages, which are shown on the Vital Records page: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/VitalRecords.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/VitalRecords.html) I am concerned that some of the internet and published lists that I've seen for this series of bonds have some inaccuracies, and so I want to make it possible for people to view the images themselves. And this is something that all of us should do when we're conducting our research. Also, I want to use the actual clerk's or signatory's spellings of names. Any researcher with any experience needs to be familiar with all the spelling variations that can occur in early records, anyway. As I said in the message a couple of weeks ago, this is my Christmas gift to the mailing list. If you feel moved to indicate your thanks for this new project, please do so by making a donation to, or joining, the Guilford County Genealogical Society: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgcgs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgcgs/) Katherine Dick Benbow County Coordinator, Guilford County NCGenWeb _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/index.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncguilfo/) **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

It almost adjoins the old Tatum Family Cemetery in northern Guilford County. I saw 2 graves there in Nov. 2000, Rachel Peyatt and Sidney Endsle who d. 1815 or 16. It is on the N. bank of the Haw River near Stokesdale, NC on property controlled and secured by PineTree LNG. My 3G Grandfather Henry Tatum and approximately 60 others are buried nearby in the Tatum graveyard. They are located between the Haw River and I think Troublesome Creek. Henry Tatum built a house nearby that still stands. (Modern location off Oak Ridge Road) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Pat Kennedy
    3. Pat Kennedy here: I come down from the Abraham Endsley's line of Guilford Co., NC. By his daughters, Alice Endsley who md Alexander Nelson and Hannah Endsley who md: William D. McGee. Do you have any records of the Endsley and how they are related to the below families? I have always wondered what the relationship might be or were they just close friends and neighbors? ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <NCGUILFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 15, 2007 12:58 PM Subject: Re: [NCGUILFO] Present Location info. needed > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: MPeeples51 > Surnames: Peeples - Peebles - Tatum - Bruce - Banner > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.guilford/4328.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Thank You for the reply. > The deed only calls it; " Endsley's graveyard between the Haw River and > Reedy Creek " > > You are right I am sure. > > Rev Henry Tatum and Wyatt Peeples are my Line; > > 1-Henry Tatum > 2- Thurza Bruce Tatum b. 1807 d. 11-10-1882 > m/ 5-15-1827 Guilford Co.
