Its goal is to collect and record the life histories of employees of the Oakdale Cotton Mill, which has been in operation in Jamestown since 1865. It is the oldest continuously operating cotton Mill in Guilford Co. and perhaps in North Carolina. The immediate goal of the committee was the production of a half-hour professional grade CD that would explore the history of the mill and its employees. In addition, written survey questionnaires were distributed and informal interviews of a number of people were conducted. Scores of photographs loaned by participants were scanned. All of these materials will become part of the permanent collection of the mill project. In July 2007, twenty-one individuals with personal or family or mill village connections gave interviews filmed by a professional filming crew hired for the week. The CD developed from this material is expected to be available by early 2008 and will be widely and inexpensively available to all who are interested. Participants will receive free copies. The Historic Jamestown Society is sponsoring the project, helping to fund it, and supplying an officer to chair the project committee. A professional filmmaker, Mary M. Dalton, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dept. of Communications, Wake Forest University, added her expertise. Grants were obtained from several sources. Oakdale Cotton Mill has been generous in allowing access to its plant, its employees, and to its business archives of old record books advertising materials, and photographs. Moore in my database file of people who worked at Oakdale Cotton Mill in Jamestown, N.C. This Wm. Moore was born about 1825 and was employed as working here at Oakdale in the 1870 census records. I think that this Wm. Moore who worked at Oakdale, may have been your Wm. Moore's father. I found Wm. Moore living in Guilford Co., North Carolina. Wm. was age 45, his wife was Adeline and she was 36, they had three children, Martin, age 15, who also worked in the mill and Cyrus? age 14,and a William, Jr. who was age 7. They also had a man named Adam Ward who was age 17, who, also worked in the mill. Your Wm. was born about 1823, but, I have had not any luck in finding out if and he ever did work in the cotton mill. Conflicting information is given on a Delayed Birth Certificate issued to my father, it states they were born in Acworth, Hall County GA. This is a mistake because Acworth is not and has never been in Hall County. It is also known that they were born in North or South Carolina. They had a large family of seven children. The children's names were, Francis, Freeman, Dewey, Floyd, Clyde, Authur, and one female named Aletha. I am the son of Clyde. He was married to Francis Amelia Daniell who was born on September 06 1907 in Toombs C! ounty GA and died April 1977 in Savannah GA. Sometimes in the "records" they spell the names wrong, or possibly give initials...middle name, instead of first name, etc. I started by trying to focues on one thing at a time. I don't know how far you are into it, but it gets overwhelming for sure if you look at everything there is to research. So, maybe go with the county they lived in last that you know for sure, and start backwards from there. The census records are good, but not 100%, especially with ages & birthyears. But if you know what a relative did for a living, possibly looking into that also (as someone already suggested). The internet has recourses to at least hopefully locate them, ex: NC Archives,USGenWeb, (if this is where you would start)..The Library of Virginia, The National Archives and many Government web sites could lead you to something too, you can even do a Google search on a name, and start looking there. Of ! course that could come up with anything. Keep trying, I'd start with the county they last were located in, and go from there. Hope this helps..SDiane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Robert Tucker had land in the late 1700's. I have been told that Robert Tucker died in Lincoln County. He was a Rev. War solider and drew a pension. My question is two of my ancestors were chain bearers for his property. Can anyone tell if they know of a connection between Robert Tucker, Isham Mills, & Simon Mills. Information on the land of Robert Tucker His land was in the 1779 Guilford Land Warrants It states Robert Tucker for grant of land issued March 1, 1780 600 acres on both sides of Uwarie Creek and Isham Mills and Simon Mills are listed as the chain carriers. I have no book listed but had to have been in Land Warrants. Now the chain carriers 95% of the time were related to the person receiving the land. If this holds true in this deed then Robert Tucker was related to the Mills possible marriage of either sister of Simon or Isham, could have been the brother of Simon's mother Mary, William Mills first wife could have been a Tucker. Simon's or Isham's wife could be a Tucker several different ways that this could fit. OR IT COULD NOT FIT AT ALL. Gladly share info but I need help on this item. Does anyone also have the Book and Page for Robert Tucker's land.

Many mention families who settled early, came together and the origin of the groups. They established mills, churches, businesses, built roads, joined local military groups, etc. and individuals can be mentioned by name. Some states have agricultural census records. In the 1850's, a widowed grandparent might be living with a family who has a different surname. It would probably be a relative. Assume that you have looked at land records. Anyway, good luck and don't give up. Mollie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. (1) read books on local history, your family might be mentioned. (2) tax records (3) obits if they are available in your time period (4) newspapers for local happenings such as marriages (5) trace brothers/sisters of your ancestor to locate information. Even several generations past the one that you are searching might mention a grandfather or uncle. Some information we may never find but just keep looking.
