    3. Pardon my injecting something at this point of discussion, but did the NC Militia officer, Arthur Forbis attain the rank of Colonel? My knowledge, and I don't want to give odds on it, is that he was a Captain in Colonel Paisley's Regiment of the NC Militia at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Please clarify this; I'm getting quite confused. Thank you, Dick Hudson

My Joseph McLean came from Philadelphia County, PA and it is clearly state as "County" repeatedly on many different sources. He had migrated with his father from PA. I know this from the 1790 NC census. He had settled "across the creek" from his father, John McLean, Jr. John was born 1724 in County Tyrone, Ulster Province, Ireland. He married Jane Marshall in Philadelphia County, PA in 1751. Obviously, there was a very strong tendency for these Scots-Irish to marry, live around and remain with their own kind. John McLean, Sr. had brought the boy, John, Jr., with him when he migrated to the US from Ireland. A certain John Forbes was a neighbor of the McLeans when the part of Rowan County in which they lived was cut off and combined with other parts to make Guilford Co. This was an act against the Regulators by the infamous Crown Governor Tryon. I have a very strong feeling that all of these men were Regulators or at least sympathizers. Particularly, because they ended up on the Continental side in the Revolution. Dick

    3. My Hance McCain and Arthur Forbis/Forbes were members of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church (now in the northern suburbs of Greensboro, but at one time was called Martinsville). In my research of the two men named Arthur Forbis I learned that there was another Buffalo Presbyterian Church in the southeastern part of the county. I think Col. Arthur Forbis belonged to this latter one. (Somewhere I got the impression that the northern-most church was founded by Scots-Irish from Pennsylvania, while the southern one was founded by Scots-Irish who came up from SC. I'm fuzzy on this, though). Does anyone know why there were two Presbyterian Churches named "Buffalo" in the same county? And what was with the name "Buffalo" and the Scots-Irish? I've seen other Buffalo Presbyterian Churches in other early Scots-Irish communities, as well as Buffalo Creeks, etc. Just curious if anyone has better insight... Lou Poole

    3. Dear Researcher's My wife is a descendent of Conrad Shoemaker, the man that killed Col. Arthur Forbis. It was he who ran a banonet into Col. Arthur Forbis already lying wounded on the battlefield of Guilford Court House the morning after when Col. Forbis asked this old Tory for a drink of water. For this inhuman act the Whigs, a few days after the battle, caught him in his house, took him to the church near by, and shot him. His neighbors unhinged the door and laid him on it. the blood stains remained till the old church was torn down. Conrad Shoemaker was a Tory, but he also signed the Regulator List. Doesn't seem like he quite believed in what his neighbors did. Thank You Roger R Spencer Jr

    3. Dick (and list): I have seen Forbis and Forbes spelled alternately in the old records, sometimes in the same record. I am sure that it was Scots-Irish in origin, but have no more information at this time. I'm pretty sure that the Arthur Forbis/Forbes who was my ancestor came to Guilford from the Scots-Irish community in Pennsylvania, but just where is part of my question. 2. Lou Poole
    3. Been lurking on the list for a while and have not seen anyone discuss my families, so here goes... I'm a descendant of Hance McCain (ca. 1760-16 Nov 1824) and Jennet (Jenny) Forbis of Guilford Co. Jenny Forbis was the daughter of Arthur Forbis who married, ca. 1764, Mrs. Lydia Steele Rankin, widow of George Rankin. I have quite a bit of information on the McCain family (but could always use more). I am particularly interested in the Forbis family, however. From what I can gather there were two contemporary men with the name Arthur Forbis in early Guilford County. My Arthur Forbis was not the one who was prominent in the Battle of Guilford Court House. But I can't help but wonder if the two were not related somehow. Would love to know something about the family of Lydia Steele as well. Please contact me if you have information on any of these families, and would like to compare notes. Lou Poole, Richardson, TX (lpoole@dallas.net)

    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. The Guilford County Genealogical Society has published a book by Ruth Thompson and Louise Hartgrave entitled ABSTRACTS OF MARRIAGE BONDS AND ADDITIONAL DATA, GUILFORD COUNTY, NC. VOL. II, 1841-1868. My gggrandparents were ABNER PACE (1821-1900ROWAN) and JULIA ANN REED (1825-1911GUILFORD), and they received a marriage bond on 3 Aug. 1843 in Guilford County. On the NC Marriage bond, Abner spelled his name PASE in error, for the family went by PACE in all later generations. This is from the LDS fiche of NC marriage bonds. My gggrandparents are apparently entered in the record: 046(for Guilford), 02, 340. Witnesses were Richard MINER and John M. LOGAN. The marriage bond number is 000058572. If anyone has this book in their possession, I would certainly appreciate a lookup to determine if their parents' names are given in annotations. Abner Pace was an orphan and apprenticed in 1837 in Guilford, but no parents are given on the apprentice bond. I have been trying to find their parents' names for years without success. They had only one child, and he had only two children. Consequently this family has left few footprints. I will be making a trip to the nearest FHC in a couple of weeks. I especially thank you, Rick, for your listing of the estate records for the year I need. And to Teg for your thoughts on the cost of copying papers. If I can look at a microfilm of some records, I may just decide I want that entire file after all. And to Warren, too. I will let y'all know how I made out. Thanks again. Mary

    3. I know there are been a series of messages on the Swearing Creek settlement and also the Jersey settlement. I read them but did not keep the material because I didn't know it applied to me. Now I have found that I am from the Stout-Merrill/Smith-Julian line and that my people came from New Jersey to Swearing Creek. Could someone review me on where Swearing Creek is? Is that the same as the Jersey settlement? I believe the Merrills were Baptists there before Benjamin Merrill was executed by Gov. Tryon in 1771. I am not even sure which list I should be posting this message to so I have sent it to Mecklenburg, Guilford, and Rowan. I am descended from BENJAMIN MERRILL and JEMIMA SMITH (via ANDREW SMITH & ANNA MERSHON). This line merges at BENJAMIN MERRILL with the line of PENELOPE STOUT 2 and WILLIAM MERRILL, down to the JULIANS of Rowan County.
