Hofmann. These tracts are sometimes referred to as "being one of the Thirty Irish tracts" or "being one of the Thirty Entries of the Nottingham Settlement" or something similar. Sometimes they are referred to only by number ("So-and-So's Land Known as Number Eighteen"). It helps to know the name of the grantee, as in some instances there is no reference to the Nottingham settlement in the entry. Ideally, those interested will want to get copies of the original grants from the NC State Archives in Raleigh. Nancy Maxwell cmaxwell@flash.net

The Nottingham Company was a Presbyterian congregation that moved to Orange and Rowan Counties in what is today Guilford County, NC, in the 1750s. I believe there were about 25 Granville land grants to members of this congregation. They are plotted on a map by Fred Hughes (there is also a typed supplement) that is available from the Guilford County Genealogical Society; it's called "Guilford County, North Carolina, Historical Documentation", prepared August, 1988. Hi Cindy, I believe what you are referring to is the Nottingham Colony. This is a quote from the Guilford Genealogist 12 (Winter 1985): 36 "The Nottingham Colony was a group of people who came to the area from the Nottingham Presbyterian Church in Rising Sun, Lancaster County, PA (when a new survey was made there in 1767, Rising Sun was located in Maryland). Even though there were 33 sections of land laid out, only 26 sections can be accounted for with 21 family members moving on to this land by December 1753. These family heads were James Barr Thomas Beals George Black Walter Carruth* John Cummings John Cunningham Robert Donnell Thomas Donnell Hugh Foster John McClintock James McQuiston Robert McQuiston Thomas McQuiston William Mebane* Adam Mitchell Robert Mitchell John Nicks Robert Rankin Samuel Scott Andrew Wilson *probably Colony Members" The land they received were Granville Land Grants. See "The Granville District of North Carolina 1748-1763" abstracted by Margaret M. Hofmann for these grants. Rick Saunders Salt Lake City, UT
Is anyone familiar with what are called the Nottingham land grants? My understanding is that they were Presbyterian church members from Pennsylvania and Maryland. Does anyone have access to them? Cindy.
Freidens Church is located in Gibsonville, N.C. and is still standing and running every Sunday. The address is: Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church 6001 N 61 North Gibsonville, North Carolina 27249 Phone: 449-7421 They have church records available for about $42.00 for three books. They are records from 1881-1951, 1802-1848, 1853-1877. I have never heard of another Friedens UCof Christ. The cemetery is located across the road from the church and it is maintained and quiet lovely. If you call the above number, they can put you in touch with how to order the books. Thanks. I would be interested in contacting researchers of the following families in Guilford. PACE, EDITH married THOMAS GARDNER 7 Aug 1849 in Guilford; witness Jonathan Gardner. PACE, EDNEY married THOMAS OZMENT JR 18 Oct 1841 in Guilford; witness John C. Kenedy. PACE, LIVELEY married WILLIAM N. LITHCOE 17 May 1850 in Guilford; witness Jackson Lithcoe. My gggrandfather was ABNER PACE (1821-1900Rowan) was apprenticed in 1837 in Guilford; he was declared an orphan in some sense. In 1843 in married JULIA ANN REED in Guilford and moved to Rowan. The above female Paces were also apprenticed as orphans in Guilford when they were of age to be apprenticed. The male Paces apparently left Guilford after serving their apprentice bonds, but the Pace females married and perhaps stayed in Guilford. The female names were LIVELEY PACE(b.abt 1831, app'd 1839 to James THOM) and EDY PACE(b.abt1828, app'd 1841 to David SULLIVAN). EDY PACE could have been either of the top entries above. I would be happy to share information. Betty Pace - Norfolk, VA ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I read somewhere that Friedens Church was torn down some years ago. Were there any local newspaper articles published about that event? What became of the church records? Does anyone on the list have a picture of the church building? I would like to get a copy, if possible. Thanks, Dave Shoemaker
Does anyone have access to information on Guilford County Land Grants in the 1780s? I am looking for grants to John, Jacob, and Isaac Coulson/Colson. Cindy
Yvonne, There are many on the list that live in the area there (Gibsonville) and/or are very acquainted with it. I for one pass by it on my way to visit my sister in Reidsville. I live on the Outer Banks of NC. I have ancestors buried there as well. It is a wonderful old cemetery. Relatives of the famed Boon(e)) family are there. Capt. Peter Summers has a wonderful recognized tomb by the DAR. If you wish some lookups, I can possible top by there on my next visit. This particular Frieden's has no sign indicating that it is a UCC. I know nothing of the other church you mention. Email me privately with your names. Yvonne, I don't know anything of the two churches you have mentioned. However, I know that Freiden's Lutheran became Freiden's Evangelical and Reformed Church, a very liberal offshoot of Lutheranism. Some time around 1960 it merged with yet another church (I think one of the Presbyterians) and became the United Church of Christ, by which name it is known today. I tell you this because if you are seeking a church that was formerly Freiden's, you might now want to look for it under the United Church of Christ. Regards, Dick Hudson
Proximity Cemetery is listed in FAMILY BURYING GROUNDS AND ABANDONED CHURCH CEMETERIES IN GUILFORD COUNTY, NC,I have a copy of the book and will do look ups for you. The cemetery contains an estimated 2,000 graves, but due to poor condition only 125 graves have stones in a readable state. I was there a couple of years ago and it is overgrown, many sunken graves, broken stones everywhere. A very sad state. I would appreciate any help in locating the grave of my great great grand-mother, RUTH A. ARMFIELD. She died in 1910 and my be buried with her daughter and son-in-law, GUY F. and BERTICE A. DUNCAN. EMBA
If anyone has family buried in the Proximity Mill Cemetery owned by Cone Mills in Guilford County, NC don't waste your time calling Cone Mills to find out exactly where he/she is buried. They didn't keep records. I talked with a very nice gentleman and he said that when they started the cemetery no one kept records of who was buried or where. He suggests to check with the funeral home to see if they have it in their records. I walked it about 6 months ago and it was sad to see broken stones, missing markers and just plain neglect. Just incase anyone was looking at this same cemetery. Windy
I am trying to find out some history of the Frieden's Lutheran Chruch near Gibsonville, Guilford, NC. Our family has many relatives buried there. I recently read on the Shenandoah VA rootsweb list, a discussion regarding Freiden's Lutheran Church located in Keezletown, near Harrisonburg, VA. I was wondering if the two churches had any connection to one another. Yvonne Wyrick
Looking for any information on Austin HIGHTOWER and his son William HIGHTOWER or Wm's wife, Amelia "Milly" Onslow FARR HIGHTOWER. Did she die in NCA, where, when... Wm. moved on into GA, then to AL and died in Autauga Co., AL . He and his father, Austin were Constables in the original Orange Co. during Rev. 1832. Austin died in NCA. Where is Austin buried are there any records? His estate was "proved" in SCA. This gets MOST confusing. Any information or help, GREATly appreciated, thanks, teg

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT NC, BUT IN VA YOU FREQUENTLY RUN ACROSS VESTRY RECORDS IN WHICH SOME PARISHONER IS ALLOTTED MONEY TO CARE FOR A SICK PERSON, OR TO BURY THE POOR. I HAVE ONE INSTANCE OF A WIDOW GIVEN MONEY BY THE CHURCH TO CARE FOR HER 6 ORPHANS, BUT IN THAT INSTANCE ONE PARENT WAS ALIVE. IN ANOTHER INSTANCE A PARISHONER WAS GIVEN MONEY FOR CARING FOR A SICK TEEN-AGED BOY. GENERALLY SPEAKING, I THINK THESE "ASSIGNMENTS" WERE DOLED OUT TO WILLING PARISHONERS AS ACTS OF CHRISTIAN CHARITY & THE INDIVIDUAL CHURCH RECOMPENSED THE VOLUNTEER. I HAVE NEVER RUN ACROSS ANY GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY AT ANY LEVEL WHICH DID THE LIKE DURING COLONIAL TIMES & LONG AFTERWARD. KAY G. KLWRAGEG@aol.com
Hi, I have Larkin Compton traced back to North Carolina. Marriage bond issued 4 Nov 1818 in Guilford Co to Larkin and Beckey Andrew. I have hit a brick wall on finding parents and siblings. Elizabeth "Betsey" Compton and Tilmon Story were issued a bond in Guilford Co, NC 3 Feb 1817. I have enough information that links Larkin and Elizabeth together, but cannot prove they are brother and sister. Other Compton marriages in Guilford Co were John Grissom/Fanny Compton; James Compton/Mary Whit. Can anyone help me with any of these surnames? Lorena of Indiana
