    3. Hi Sonia, I saw your query on Guilford Co List. I recently joined the Guilford Co. Historical Society, and ordered a few of the back copies of their (EXCELLENT) publication. In the Summer 1997 issue, they published an Orange County Surveyor's Record c. 1798, (by Raymond Dufau Donnell) which states: During the final week of land records access at the Office of NC Secretary of State at Raleigh, the week ending September 25, 1993, the following Orange Co surveyor's report was found. It had been misfiled, badly torn, and was crushed between other papers. After pressing out some of the damage, it was possible to recover most of the information on it. We have reviewed these entries against the land grants and find that several were never completed and that grants were not issued for them. Since a number of the persons listed were known to have had Guilford Co associations, the report is provided here for researchers. "List of Returns made in the Secretarys office by Charles Christmas Surveyor for Orange County together with Each of Their Respective Numbers" among those names are: Acres Warrant Thomas Person 200 240 Thomas Person 300 1297 (I am not sure just what this means - I am guessing that this Thomas (or two Thomas's - the entries are separated by 4 other names) had warrants for the number on the right, but when surveyed, only had the number of acres reported? I know there was some sort of land fraud that went on in Guilford Co where several times more of the numbers of acres available in the county had been fraudently granted; perhaps the same in Orange Co?). So, it may be a thought to look in Orange County for 'your' Thomas. The Fall 1998 issue has a story about a James Parson, son of George and Ruth Green, who established a mill on Deep River at Groomtown Road. Let me know if you would be interested in any information from that story. Hope this helps! Diane

    2. ~Sonia Haga~
    3. Hi all. I'm looking for information on a Thomas Persons/Parsons who lived near the Dillon Mill in Guilford Co. At this point, the only info I have gauge a time period are deeds in which he was mentioned. The majority of the deeds were in 1779 and 1780. On the 1790 census, a thomas Persons whom I believe to be the same in the deeds (as the only one in county) had the following stats: 2 FWM 16+, 2 FWM -16, 4 FWF, no others (slave or free). I feel strongly that he is the brother to my George Parsons, also listed as Persons on the 1790 census. If anyone has any information on this Thomas or any other Persons/Persons, please contact me. Thanks so much in advance. Sonia Parsons Haga kntypine@bellsouth.net

Nancy Millis (1799-1884) married Shannon Wiley. Her sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" Millis (1794-1832) married Samuel Wiley. They were reportedly daughters of James Millis and Mary Jackson. The Abstracts of Marriage Bonds in Guilford Co. indicate that James and Mary married in 1785. I have no information about other family members. I hope this can help your search. Dave

    2. Is anyone researching the Millis family of Guilford County? Barring that, could anyone assist me with a look-up in the 1840 Guilford census (see below)? I've done an awful lot of work pulling together what I can about the many Millises who lived in Guilford, using various printed and original sources and will be happy to share what I can. My dead end here is John Millis. He was apprenticed as a tanner at the age of 19 (and as an "orphan") on May 19, 1831 in Guilford County. Date of birth is given as Oct 25, 1812. He married Caroline Gardner on November 21, 1835, across the county line in Randolph County. About 1841 he left North Carolina for Mississippi. I have been unable to identify his parents or connect him in anyway with any of the numerous Millises in Guilford during this time. He should be in the 1840 Guilford census, and I do find in the index to that census reference to a John Millis. He is supposed to be on page 225 of the original census. If anyone out there has a copy of the census, could you please assist me with a lookup of the data relating to this John? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
