    1. [NCGUILFO-L] ELIZABETH L. MARTIN
    2. Dwight Ozment
    3. Hi, all Trying to determine the parents of Elizabeth L. MARTIN (b.September 22, 1829, NC; d. 1911, Guilford Co., NC, buried Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Greensboro, NC) . She married December 29, 1853, Guilford Co., NC to Nathaniel G. OZMENT (b.February 23, 1817, NC ; d. March 22, 1883, Guilford Co., NC, buried Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Greensboro, NC). The 1850 census, Northern Dist., Guilford Co., NC lists Nathaniel OZMENT (single) living on his family farm adjacent to one Alexander MARTIN (possible lead ?). The 1870 and 1880 census reports, Guilford Co., NC, list another female ("sister-in-law" of Nathaniel OZMENT, sister to Elizabeth) named Francis (sic) MARTIN (b. abt. 1836) termed "idiot", living in same household with Nathaniel and Elizabeth OZMENT. These same census reports state Elizabeth and her parents were born in NC. If anyone on this list has any information about these individuals or families, please contact me at my personal e-mail address. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Also, where can I locate a copy of THE FIRST GUILFORD COURTHOUSE AND ADJACENT LAND by Raleigh C. Taylor (Jan. 12, 1953) ? Dwight W. Ozment, Richmond, VA <mozment@erols.com 9:35 P.M. Thur. 1. [NCGUILFO-L] Granville Grant to John WOOD in 1754
    2. Imogene Bennett
    3. I need help to try to pinpoint the location of land for a deed made in Orange Co NC 11 Jun 1754 to John WOOD from the Right Honorable John Earl Granville. This was for 600 acres located on Stone's Creek. This land was sold one year later with date of 10 Jun 1755 from John WOOD to Gilbert STREAN (STRAHORN?). John WOOD's wife Sarah relinquished her dower. Question: In what present-day county is Stone's Creek located? Has it been renamed? With the help of the USGS web site, I can find only three creeks by the name of Stone or Stones currently in North Carolina. The three are located in Onslow County, Johnston County, and Rutherford County. I don't believe either of those three counties were ever part of Orange County where this land was first granted. Can anyone help me determine where this John WOOD & wife Sarah lived? Thank you. Imogene Bennett Springfield, MO ibennett@mail.orion.org

    3. Betty, I am returning this email to you by using your original and simply responding by hitting reply to all. When the new email document comes up it had your original message on it. I then right clicked on the body of the message and chose the item "Select All" from the drop down menu. Then the entire message which you had sent was highlighted and I hit the "Delete" key on my keyboard and the body of the message cleared completely. Actually, it is inappropriate to respond to a message with the old message if it has any substantial length. Sometimes, when it's just a brief message and your response specifically requires the old message in order to be fully intelligible, then sending with the old message seems appropriate to me. Hope this answered your question. Regards, Dick Hudson

    3. The method described by Dick works with some but not all e-mail systems. (It works with my POPS 3 account, but not with my web-based account.) Most systems also allow you to set your default preferences for displaying the messages you are replying to. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. 1. [NCGUILFO-L] Protocol for Replying to Messages
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Maybe I have missed a change in protocol for replying to messages, or perhaps I have been incorrect all along. Could someone straighten me out? I have been replying to messages from above the old message, probably since that it where my system puts me after I hit the reply button. I thought that this what I was supposed to do because this is what I saw on other replies. I am relatively new with computers, by the way. Now I notice a lot of replies appearing beneath the original message--you have to scroll through the old message to find the answer. It is actually more trouble to reply in that position, so I know this is not done through laziness. What is the proper position for replies? 1. [NCGUILFO-L] Nottingham Colony
    2. Fredric Z. Saunders
    3. Hi Louise, I have never heard of a Nottingham SOCIETY before. What I have seen is that the Nottingham Colony was from Nottingham Presbyterian Church, in Rising Sun, Lancaster Co., PA. When the border between MD and PA was finally established in 1767, this became part of Cecil Co., MD. They moved to (now) Guilford County where they obtained Granville Grants. There were 33 plots of 640 acres each, but only 26 are supposedly accounted for by mentioning which number of the 33 it was in the Granville Grants. My interest is the McCUISTON family that was part of this group. I also have interest in wondering if my SHORT family were also part of this group, and one of the unaccounted for members. Moses SHORT had 640 acres surveyed in the same area (North Buffalo Creek) at the same time (1753), land adjacent to Thomas DONNELL (who was a member of the colony). One of the witnesses was James McCUISTON (another member). Moses SHORT apparently sold this to George HAMILTON, who is the person who obtained the grant in 1756. Moses SHORT was also a chain carrier for two tracts of John NIX/NICKS (another member) that were surveyed in 1751 and 1756. Moses SHORT also married a daughter of John NICKS. I have never specifically looked to see if records exist for this church. Then again, I have never seen anything published about the members of the Colony being at this Church, other than statements of that is where they were from. Rick Saunders Salt Lake City, UT

    2. Louise Donnell
    3. Does anyone know source material about the Nottingham Society? It was a group that helped settle Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from the PA/MD/DEL area on lands that had formerly belonged in the Lord Granville grant. Someone said it had been a Presbyterian congregation, Nottingham Church. Where? I have looked in the Presbyterian Church Archives is Philadelphia but could find no cross listing about Nottingham Society. I wasn't seeking a Nottingham Church, however.

    1. [NCGUILFO-L] HALL, ZILPHA & PACE, ALSAY
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. There is a ZILPHA PACE (age 50, b. Chatham Co.) living in Guilford County in the 1850 census. That would make her born around 1800, assuming the census age is correct. She is in 1850 living only with her "idiotic" son David Pace, age 16. She will later move to Mecklenburg Co. with relatives NEEDHAM PACE and YOUNG PACE, both of which had been apprenticed as orphans (possibly just the father dead) in Guilford in the 1830's. Also apprenticed in Guilford as an orphan was my ABNER PACE (1822-1900), who moved to live in Rowan County around 1843-44. These male Paces are believed to have been siblings or cousins. ZILPHA PACE (B.1800) is shown on the 1850 census as having been born in Chatham Co., but she appears to have possibly married ALSAY PACE in Johnston Co. in Sept 1820. At that time she was ZILPHA HALL. I believe this is the same Zilpha Hall Pace who later moved to Guilford Co. and then to Mecklenburg with Needham and Young Pace. In the 1850 Guilford Co. neighborhood with with Zilpha Pace were other Paces, also born in Chatham: NANCY ANN PACE (AGE 20), and EDITH PACE (AGE 35), both showing birth in Chatham Co. NANCY PACE was in 1850 living with a GILLIAM SCOTT (wife NAMED ALSEY, age 42); The Scott husband and wife had both been born in Chatham Co. EDITH PACE is living with NATHAN WRIGHT (b. Wake Co.), and his wife ALLICE D. (age 31) who had been born in Chatham Co. These Scott and Wright families are farmers living very close to one another, plus close to the household of ZILPHA HALL PACE. It appears to me that my Pace family migrated from Chatham to Johnston (or vice versa) and then to Guilford between 1800 and 1830. ZILPHA HALL PACE went with them, it appears. Does anyone know anything about these families (PACE, HALL), especially in Chatham and Johnston Counties? 2. Carol & Mark Leonard
    3. Hi This is my first post to this list - I hope someone can help me! I am researching my GGgrandfather Nereus Harper LEONARD. I know very little about him except that he was born 21 Jan 1852 in Greensboro, Guilford (according to the LDS website). I also know that by 1870 he and his family had moved to Fillmore Co, MN where he married Lucy Agnew BRADLEY in 1878 and they had a son Doxander Perry LEONARD in 1883. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd like to get in touch with anyone who is researching the Leonard name in this county. I'm hoping to fill some gaps. It is the George FINLEY Granville Grant that mentions "the line that divides the counties of Rowan and Orange." It is our goal to plot the earliest Granville Grants that were granted supplemented by the North Carolina State Land Grants with accompnaying deed history. We started with this grant because of the county line mention and will continue plotting grants east, west, north, and south of the Finley grant. The "Nottingham Colony" will encompass this area. We have also included driving directions where applicable. We welcome your feedback and hope this project will help others who are searching the land where their ancestors lived and died.
