Does anyone have a clue as to what family a William Woods, born ABT 1792 in NC descends? William shows up on the 1860 Spartanburg County SC census (Fort Prince P.O.) with a wife named Elizabeth born ABT 1791, also in NC. Please keep in mind that the name may well have been Wood (without the s) in NC. There are no Woodses whatsoever on the 1850 Spartanburg County Census, and the only Woods "head of household" on the 1860 Spartanburg County Census are this William, and my elusive gggrandfather Henry J. Woods (b NC 1826). On the 1860 Spartanburg County Census, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Father: Henry J. Woods (b. NC 1826) Wife: Mary H. Woods (b SC 1822) Children: Nathan J Woods (b SC 1851) Lynch E. Woods (b SC 1846) female (perhaps a previous Woods-Lynch marriage?) James H. Woods (b SC 1848) (my great-grandfather) John B. Woods (b SC 1849) William B. Woods (b SC 1850) Thomas J. Woods (b SC 1854) Luther L. Woods (b SC 1856) Margaret C. Woods (b SC 1858) Robert H. Woods (b SC 1859) As both William and Henry, seemingly from nowhere, appear in Spartanburg SC in time for the 1860 Census, and they both were born in NC, perhaps they are somehow connected? Or perhaps it it just another coincidence. In any event, Henry's family ended up, by 1870, moving on to Greene County , TN. Thanks for any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
Hi folks, am passing along the thanks to Wayne Dunn for his submission of the newspapers. He is not on the list. He thanks all of you for your thanks. He will be adding more. I think one more and then it will be about two weeks before he can gather up more due to vacation time. Hello! I want to add my thanks to Wayne Dunn for the very fine work he has done with both the Times and Patriot newspapers. Browsing through the 1857 issue of the Times, I was able to find information I had been seeking for years -- and not only that but other information in the Patriot, 1826 and 1827, which I didn't even know existed, therefore, never expected to find. Because of Wayne's work some of the pieces of the puzzle have now been put into place. Thanks again. CCoverdale

Guilford Co. was made up of parts of Rowan and Orange Cos. in 1771 (I think). The creation of Guilford was an attempt on the part of Colonial Gov. Tryon to pacify the complaints raised by the Regulator movement and to diffuse political power in the region. No, but actually things aren't quite as bad for Guilford researchers as this would make it seem. There were actually very few settlers in this part of NC before 1750, so really all you need to worry about for Guilford research are the Orange and Rowan County records for the 1752-1770 period. The old Rowan/Orange county line ran north-south pretty much right down the middle of present-day Guilford, so if your folks are in eastern Guilford, they were probably in Orange prior to 1770; if in western Guilford, probably in Rowan. Migration into Guilford in the 1750-1800 period was mostly from the north and east - further east in NC, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania. For records prior to 1750, those are the most likely areas to search. Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com state coordinator for NCGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/
Was Guilford Co always Guilford or did it start out as part of some other county? There doesn't appear to be a listing for Guilford on the 1790 census.
According to THE HANDYBOOK for Genealogists (USA), Guilford was created in 1770 from Rowan and Orange Counties. ORANGE County was created in 1752 from Bladen, Granville and Johnston Counties. ROWAN County was created from Anson county in 1753. BLADEN was created in 1734 from New Hanover and Bath Counties GRANVILLE was created from Edgecombe, Originally Glasgow in 1746. I received the following message that needed to be resent in order to go to the list. It is from "Carla and Ken Burres <ckburres@mcmsys.com>" My g-g-g-g-grandparents were Gottlieb Hammer, born abt. 1775-1778 in Unter Turckheim, near Stuttgart, Germany., and his wife, Agnes Jetter. His son was Jacob Hammer, b. May 26, 1798 in Unter Turckheim, Germany. Arrived in the U.S. --date unk.--. married Priscilla Eyler in Graceham, Frederick Co., Md. on Aug. 19, 1819. Their children were John Gottlieb Hammer b.1820 ( my g- grandfather), Caty Anna b. 1822, Christian Samuel, b. 1824, Maria b. 1825, Salome Angelica, b. 1828, Jacob Jeremiah, b. 1830, and Elizabeth margaret, b. 1835. I don't have any idea if Gottlieb or Agnes Hammer ever left Germany, and I'm unsure of the names of any of their children, other than Jacob. I've been told his siblings were George hammer, I.G. Hammer, and Mary L. Hammer, but have no proof of that. I also don't know where Jacob is buried. His wife Priscilla died and is buried in Washington Co., Md. My g-grandfather John, and his brother, Christian Samuel, moved to Tazewell Co., Ill the early 1840's. Let me know, if you think that your Frederika fits into this family somewhere. (by the way, do you know what her religious affiliation was? Jacob and his family were members of the Moravian church, and there are really good records on them, through the church ). Sherron Logan

Jesse ANDREW, Jr, d. 27 Nov 1864, and wife Jennie GANNON ANDREW, d. 6 Oct 1868, are buried in the Mount Hope Reformed church graveyard. Would like to know if the church is still active? Is the church located in Rock Creek Twp? Thanks for your help. Lorena in Indiana
Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is a book or other related material on the ANDREW family of Guilford Co, NC? In the Guilford Genealogist, Winter 1982, a Rev. J. D. Andrew wrote a sketch of the Andrew family in Guilford Co. The names mentioned are Mark Andrew of Maryland>Curtis Andrew>Jesse who married Jennie Gannon>Jesse Jr. who married Margaret Jobe. At the present time I have been searching microfilm on Curtis Andrew. His son Luke was named administrator of his estate 20 Oct 1826 in Guilford Co. I am still searching for the names of Curtis's children, but it is slow waiting for microfilm. Can anyone help me with this family. It would be appreciated. Lorena of Indiana

Thanks, Janie, I have checked the Confederate Veteran. My fellow is not mentioned, but there were many articles on his unit (57th NC Regiment). I just thought I would post that message because it would be a good project for someone to undertake since so many of the old Civil War newspapers have been destroyed. But they might still exist somewhere and could be memorialized by putting them on the web. I know that it was customary to print notices in these old newspapers of unit activity, and activity of the hometown boys during the Civil War. I would think it would be a gold mine for many researchers.
