    3. Hello All, I had saved this from the Orange Co, NC-L regarding Cane Creek and thought maybe you'd like to see it also. Hope it helps. Marsha -----Original Message----- From: Wright, Lisa [mailto:wright.iog@mhs.unc.edu] Sent: Friday, November 06, 1998 2:29 PM To: NCORANGE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCORANGE-L] Cane Creek I recently helped someone else with this issue. I live in Siler City, NC approx. 8 miles from Cane Creek located in Snow Camp, Alamance County. It was the original Cane Creek Mother of Meetings where Cornwallis camped. I found a book entitled Cane Creek Mother of Meetings written by Bobbie T. Teague with the help of Wilma Griffin with all of the history about Cane Creek. There are 2 Cane Creeks and I believe this is the reason why. The one in Hillsborough, Orange County is Cane Creek Baptist.: Friends arrived as early as 1749. In it she states that the Cane Creek settlers began meeting. Also since there was such a wide area it would be impossible to name the 30 families mentioned in the minutes but it did name 15 families. Members of the meeting who seem to exercise particular talent were recognized as having a gift of ministry. The individual would be considered a "recorded" minister in the Society of Friends There was also an early meeting at Eno, near Hillsborough . These Friends were charter members of Cane Creek. In fact, there may have been a settlement at Eno before the one at Cane Creek, as there were meetings for worship in that area by 1751. In 1761, a preparative meeting was begun (Newlin 137) Friends at Eno seem to have had an independent spirit somewhat apart from the Quaker mainstream of their time. They did not always conform to what was expected of them. A minute from the women's monthly business meeting, Sixth month 1767, provides the information that a committee of three women was appointed to visit Eno because "they did not attend mid-week meeting." The committee was to "visit them and bring them to a sense of their disorderly conduct." They reported that they had found a luke-warm situation at Eno and recommended the privilege of holding a meeting be taken away. There are other, similar incidents recorded. In July 1767, the Minutes indicate that a different committee was appointed to "stir them up to more diligence in attending meetins for discipline or whatever else the might find." Eventually Eno would become a subordinate of Spring Meeting. By 1847, it became necessary to lay down the meeting (Newline 137). The site of the Eno Meeting was one mile north of Hillsborough on the Eno River in Orange county. This is just a side note from me. Alamance County use to be a part of Orange county. Hope this helps Lisa ==== NCORANGE Mailing List ==== Larry Noah - LarryNoah@juno.com - Listowner - NCORANGE mailing list Visit our host - RootsWeb at http://www.rootsweb.com/ List website - http://members.tripod.com/~lrnoah/NCOrange/

Hi - A quote from the book "CAROLINA CRADLE" p. 135-136 "In addition to the Quakers who settled in the Yadkin Valley after 1746, many migrated from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the central part of North Carolina and settled after 1750 in the present counties of Guilford, Randolph, Alamance, and Chatham. Cane Creek Monthly Meeting was organized in present-day Alamance County in 1751, and the New Garden Meeting three years later in what is now Guilford County." 3. The 6 vols. of Hinshaw's Quaker Records are now on a CD which you can get from http://www.FamilyTreeMaker.com Family Archive CD 192 for Only $59.99 This Family Archive contains images of the pages of all six volumes of the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy originally published by the Genealogical Publishing Company. It references approximately 455,000 individuals with Quaker ancestry in New Jersey, New York, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Almost half of all people who can trace their ancestry in America prior to 1850 have Quaker ancestors. I purchased the paper back books many years ago, at $75/per vol., so the above CD is a good deal. These records are great if you have any Quaker ancestors. Donna

    2. Pam, My William Harrell was born about 1831 in Guilford County according to the 1850 federal census. His wife was Mary Smith, born about the same time. Known children were James Harrell, b. 1850, Martha J. Harrell b. 11 Jan 1854 and Eliza Harrell, b. cir 1856. I believe that Mary Smith may have had a sister Minerva. I am trying to find out who William's parents were and where they originated from. Martha J. Harrell married Charles T. Nelson 10 Oct 1870. Charles Nelson was my gg grandfather. Both the Harrells and the Nelsons have been very elusive. Pat

    3. Dear Lee, I am the one who posted the message about hearing that some Quakers left for Canada. Your explanation sounds as good as any--I had thought perhaps religious persecution caused the move. I wish I could remember where I got the information about the move to Canada. It might have been from a web site called Quakers Corner because I know I contacted someone there about my Paces. Some of the names in my family were Biblical (one female named Lively), and I thought perhaps they might have been Quaker. No luck. Betty Pace On Mon, 19 Jul 1999 20:22:05 -0500 "G. 3. Pat, I know where my line of the Harrells ended up (1800 and after), they lived in the most beautiful place I've ever seen...along Big Rock Creek..in the shadow of Roan, Unaka and Iron Mountains in Burke-Yancey and Mitchell counties, N.C..Local names of places are: Red Hill, Harrell Hill, Harrell Township, Poplar, Upper Poplar, Will Harrell Mountain, Magnetic City (Buleahdean) and Fork Mountain..I know where they lived, I wish I could find where they came from..Sometimes I think they must have crawled from under a big rock!... There was a William Harrell etc. who owned land which lay on top of Blueridge Mountain..part in Grayson co. Va. part in Patrick Co. Va. or Surry Co. N.C...He went to Indiana about 1830..but there was another William Harrell who owned land adjoining his in Patrick or Surry Co...I don't know what happened to him...Surry Co. N.C. is just north of Guilford.. Jonathan Harrold (Harrell) was in the Guilford-Surry county area in 1752..He was a son of Richard Harrold on the Potomac River in northern Va-Md-Penn. area..I don't have his children, but he may have been father of one of the Williams'..There is also a record of one William Harrold (Harrell) in Augusta County, Va..who did not appear in court..and it was reported that he had gone to Carolina..this was 1750-60..I read the record but did not copy it at the time..I suspect that William was a son of Richard Harrold, Son of Richard Harrold and Mary Beals on the Potomac...Do not assume that all the Harrolds (Harrells etc.) in western N.C. came from eastern Va.-N.C...Many of them came from northern Va..Especially those who came there before 1770.. Sorry I couldn't be of more help...G. Lee Hearl Abingdon, Va...

    2. Lou Poole
    3. I have found the following site to be particularly relevant to the questions on Guilford Quakers: http://www.rootsweb.com/~quakers/index.htm If you click the button on left labeled "Quaker Heritage" it will give you a list of Quaker surnames. Beal and Harold (sorry, no Harrel) are there. If you click the button on the left labeled "Meeting and Records" you will find a list of Quaker Monthly Meetings from all over. Some of these have links to specific Meetings, including Cane Creek, New Garden, NC, New Garden, Pa., and Hopewell (Frederick Co.), Va. Kennett, which has its own link, was another source of Pa. Quakers who moved south. Kennett and New Garden, Pa., were closely related. I just checked these links and they don't seem to be working tonight. They were working yesterday, so hopefully the problem is only temporary. Lou Poole
