Sometimes the dress or costumes, plus hair styles, can be a clue to the period when an old photo was taken. Here is a web site that has text and pictures of Victorian dress, including American styles. I have not explored it fully, but it includes male styles and some children's dress going from the early 1800s into early 1900s.. http://costumes.org/pages/victlinks.htm Betty Pace - Norfolk, VA ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Does anyone know the origin of the female name ZILTHA/ZELPHA ? It seems to have both these spellings or else the census takers didn't know how to spell it. It is not a common name, but it does turn up periodically. I can't think of anything Biblical for this first name. RICHARD MINER was bondsman in 1843 to the marriage of my ABNER PACE (b.1821-23) and JULIA ANN REED (b.1823-25). I think that Richard Miner was either a close friend/relative of either the bride or the groom. It is possible that Richard Miner lived in the vicinity of Guilford that Abner Pace did; Abner had been apprenticed as an orphan at age 16 in 1837 to saddlemakers Hiatt & Jean (probably William Jean). I think that wherever the Miner family was in 1840 Guilford, that is also in the neighborhood of where Abner Pace was living, probably in the household of either Hiatt or Jean. I would be interested in contacting researchers of Richard Miner of Guilford, NC. My ancestors were Presbyterian and I am hoping to locate parents and siblings in the records. Their name was Starrett and I believe that they might have belonged to Haw River Presbyterian Church or one near Greensboro. The moved to Easton Mo in 1858. Help please. Can anyone from the list tell what books I find info on the Coopers in Guilford circa 1800. I have some land info that may link John, William, David, Thomas and Elizabeth. I have mrgs and census data on these folks 1790-1930. I have searched for any info that may tell me who there children were or their relationship to each other and have been unable to link any of them to my ggggf John Cooper from NC. Thanks for any help or direction you can give me to research. tootie@netnitco.net
I was just reading through the contents of back issues of the Journal of the Guilford Gen. Society, and I noticed something called the 1850 Guil. Co. Mortality Schedule in the issue for the Fall 1980. I don't understand what this mortality schedule is. Does it mean everyone who died there in 1849? If so, does each of the earlier census reports (and later ones too) have this information? Where do you find it on the census films? I am searching for the ancestors of James Floyd White. He ran a Grist Mill in Guilford County. He married Sarah Ledbetter in Stokes County. She died in 1850 approx. and he remarried. His children were William Franklin, Martha and Nancy. He remarried to a woman by the name of Shields possibly. He may have married Amanda Fry or possibly someone whose first name was Eliza. More children of this marriage were Henry, Dave, Ike (Isaac?) Elisa, Sally and Mary. I think his father was a Quaker and that he was born in Rockingham County. They all moved to Indiana eventually. Does anyone know about the Mill or Mills which are on an old Guilford map referring to a James White Mill. I cannot seem to get any more information than this regarding James Floyd White's parents. I would surely appreciate any suggestions or help anyone might have. Thank you very much. Sarah
