    3. Is there anyone who could possibly do a marriage record lookup and see if there are any other names on the record? It is for: Harmon Williams and Elizabeth Fortune, married in Guilford Co., NC on 8 Dec. 1832. I am desperately trying to find parents and/or siblings for either of these people. Thanks, Linda lindave@bright.net

    1. [NCGUILFO] ANDERSON - WILLIAMS - COOK
    2. Marsha McWilliams
    3. Am trying to find information on Isaac ANDERSON, Leven WILLIAMS and William WILLIAMS who were on the 1810 Guilford Co. census (pg. 168.) Isaac's age is listed as between 26 - 45 (I believe he was abt. 41); with 3 males under 10; 1 female under 10; 1 female 26 - 45. He may have migrated to Guilford Co, having followed some of his relatives from the Caroline Co, MD/Kent Co, DE area who were originally Nicolites. I believe he was the Isaac ANDERSON who was named in Margaret Cook's 1817, Guilford Co. will. Leven WILLIAMS' age was over 45, with 2 females under 10; 2 females 10-16; 1 female over 45. I believe William WILLIAMS was possibly his father or even a brother (also over 45.) They may have also migrated from the Eastern Shore, only much earlier than Isaac ANDERSON. Any leads or information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marsha McWilliams

    1. [NCGUILFO] School at Whitsett
    2. Joy Gann Brown
    3. Dear List Members - Does anyone know about a boarding school, probably for males only, that was located in the Whitsett area in the early years of this century? My grandfather, Samuel R. Gann, supposedly attended such a school for a short while - probably about 1908 plus or minus a couple of years. He didn't stay long as he got homesick and returned to Rockingham County. Any suggestions of where I might look for information about this Whitsett school would be appreciated. Joy Gann Brown

    1. [NCGUILFO] Owen LANE - b ca 1755, MD > Guilford Co, NC > Davidson Co, TN
    2. Looking for information about Owen LANE, who was in Guilford Co, NC as early as 1787: 24 Dec 1787. Owen LANE enters 40 acres in Guilford Co, on waters of S Buffalo Cr. Border: Parks old place on N, by Gorrel on E, Lovet on S, and Martin on W. #2596 Owen LANE was on the 1800 and 1810 census records for Guilford Co, TN. He then moves to Davidson Co, TN. He appears to have a close relationship to the OZMENT family of Guilford Co, NC an Wilson Co, TN. Trying to prove that Nancy Ann LANE, born abt. 1801 in NC, was his daughter. Nancy married Alfred OZMENT in Davidson Co, TN in 1823. Other possible children for Owen are Denny, Thomas, and Owen LANE, Jr. of Davidson Co, TN. Who was Owen's wife? RW PENSION APPLICATION FOR OWEN LANE: He was born 1755 in Caroline Co, MD. After the war, he moved to Guilford Co, NC and then to Nashville, Davidson Co, TN. Application for pension was rejected because he "did not serve six months in person." He was aged 77 at the time of application, 17 Oct 1832. (SOURCE: Marylanders to Caroline, Henry C. Both appear to be in Guilford Co, NC in 1800; John might have been there as early as 1790. Who did John marry? Possibly a daughter of Daniel SULLIVAN, d. 1805? James H. OZMENT, Sr, born ca 1755, supposedly married a Martha ARDENT/ARDER, believed to be Indian. John born ca 1763, possibly in Maryland. Both John and James H, Sr. believed to have moved to Wilson Co, TN by 1811. I am interested in any Guilford Co, NC OZMENT data. I have quite a bit and would like to fill in the gaps. 1. [NCGUILFO] Re: PACES OF GUILFORD CO., NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Dear Tim, Here is another strange tie. The YOUNG PACE who moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC, in late 1850's married a NANCY WALLS there in January 1858; she may have died in 1888 of cancer of the womb as there is a NANCY PACE in a Charlotte, NC, cemetery that I think is the same one. She appears to be by herself in a poorer section, and I suspect that her husband had died before her, but I don't know where he is buried. I got the estate papers for Young Pace from 1898 (says he died about 10 years earlier), and names his children, including a John in Phifersville (I've never been able to locate it), Abner in Mecklenburg (b. around 1858-d.1900), Augustus in Ft. Mill, SC, and two girls Fannie (?) and Mary. I have tried to locate researchers of Augustus Pace in SC, but no luck. In NC census reports, there is a David Pace in both Wake Co (Buffaloe District 421). and Guilford Co.(147) in 1830. The David Pace family in the Guilford 1830 census shows himself to be 40-50; 2 sons under 5; one son 5-10; his wife is age 30-40; one girl under age 5; one girl 5-10; one girl 10-15. These children's ages might allow one of the boys (age 5-10) to be my ABNER PACE, but I can't confirm it. In 1840 the David Pace in Wake Co. is still there (135), but the one in Guilford has disappeared--died/deserted? The one in Wake Co. (Buffaloe District 647 154) is still there in 1850. By 1870 a David Pace is in Wayne Co NC (Nahunta Twp160); another DP in Meck Co (4 W. Charlotte 099); and another in Henderson Co (GreenRiver Twp 270). I note that possible relatives (also apprenticed orphans) Needham and Young Pace were gone from Guilford shortly before 1860 and turned up in Meck. Co. for the 1870 census, along with ZILTHA /ZELPHA PACE, born around 1798. She therefore could not be the ZILTHA WOODARD who married JOSEPH PACE in Chowan, NC, in 1788. She had an "idiotic" son named David, however, who went with her to live with Needham and Young Pace in Mecklenburg. It has crossed my mind that she might be a PACE by birth instead of by marriage, and thus could be an aunt of Needham and Young instead of their mother. In March 1810 a David Pace had married a Kitty Wall in Wake Co., bondsman Nelson Wall. I tried the Wake Mailing list for information and no one seems to know anything about this couple (either of them). I think we might have two different David Pace's here, one perhaps whose father was James Pace and the other possibly the son of William Pace of Guilford Co., NC. Either that, or David Pace certainly got around, fast. Your message says that JAMES PACE SR. was born in Edgecombe, Prince George Co., VA. Is this Edgecombe VA? You also said that he died in Prince George Co., VA, but is buried in Edgecombe Co., NC. I am confused about where he was born. I wonder if the Wall or Walls name spelling has any significance. My second question concerns John COE, b. about 1779, who died on 13 Sep 1852 and is reportedly buried there. The 1850 Guilford County census gives his occupation as Meth. clergyman. Was he the minister of this church, and does anyone know anything further about him? In particular, I'm looking for a) confirmation of the maiden name and a death date for his wife Hannah McLean or McCain b) identity of Dorcas Coe age 63 in 1850, with whom he is living; also Martha PEARSON age 67, in the same household. Is Dorcas a second wife, or a sister? Who is Martha? c) The 1850 census gives his birthplace as Worcester, followed by what looks to me like "Ma" which I would interpret as Massachusetts. However, the LDS Ancestral file lists his place of birth as "Worcester Co. MD". Can anyone confirm one or the other of these? d) Is he the father of Isaac COE b. ca. 1802, who married Sarah DEANS, and can anyone tell me anything about her? 1. [NCGUILFO] WOODARD/WOODWARD FAMILY OF GUILFORD
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I would love to contact anyone researching the ROBERT L. WOODARD family of Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC. In 1890 he married Margaret L. (MAGGIE) PACE of Salisbury, Rowan; at the time Robert was living in Lexington NC and was 23 years old when he married, thus born about 1867. His parents were J. H. Woodard and E. A. Woodard of Wilson Co., NC (on Robert's marriage certificate). Maggie PACE WOODARD was the daughter of JOHN FLETCHER PACE (b.1844-d.1901) of Salisbury, Rowan Co. and her mother was MARY L. WOODSON PACE (deceased in 1874 at Maggie's birth). Maggie was raised by her grandparents, ABNER AND JULIA ANN REED PACE of Salisbury (both previously from Guilford Co.) as her father remarried (Clara Bell WILSON Pace, later the wife of Rev. Henry F. STARR of Greensboro) about a year after the death of his first wife (Mary Woodson). Robert L. and Maggie WOODARD had a number of children in Greensboro or Gilmer, where he was a machinery merchant. In the 1910 census their children were: Jennie (b.1892), Marvin (b.1898), Charley (b.1902), Minnie (b. 1902); in that same census are shown the names of MYRTLE WOODARD (WOODERED mispelling on census), identified as Robert's sister (b.1888) and JULIA A. PACE (b.1825), widow. One of the girls (first name unknown) was active in theatrical productions in the Greensboro area before her marriage to an actor named DERRELL/DERRILL. She died in Philadelphia about 1910 while she and her husband were appearing on the stage there. At the time of this daughter's death, JULIA ANN REED PACE (a widow) was living with her granddaughter and Robert L. Woodard in Greensboro, and was buried there at her death in 1911. Robert L. Woodard is buried in the same plot, but I do not know where MAGGIE PACE WOODARD is buried. She perhaps re-married or went to live with a married child after her husband's death. I would love to hear from anyone researching this Woodard family. 3. In trying to pinpoint a more exact location of where my ancestor (John PAVEY) lived (1803-1807) near Jamestown I hope someone will be able to answer a couple of questions for me. . . . . . . >From what I can tell, his property was on Bull Run Creek/River (northeast of Jamestown) which came off of Deep River. His property was in between John TALBOT and Samuel LAMB (md: Hannah Beeson.) John TALBOT had a mill on the west side of his property and I understand that is now under water due to the High Point Reservoir (along with the original Mendenhall plantation.) His entire property may even be under water as well. I have been told that quite possibly John PAVEY and Samuel LAMB's properties were not taken for this reservoir. I believe quite possibly this area MAY be where the Guilford Co. Sanitarium is/was. Does anyone know if this sanitarium still exists? Can anyone help shed some light on this subject for me? Thank you. Marsha McWilliams

    1. [NCGUILFO] NEWSPAPER OBITUARIES
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I have been scanning the internet newspaper entries that someone has kindly typed up for the Guilford newspapers in the 1830's. I find no reference at all to a Pace family, yet my ABNER PACE (b.abt 1821-22) was an orphan (apprenticed) at age 16 in 1837 in Guilford. I have also read court records and find no reference to his parents. Did the newspapers of that day commonly print obits of just ordinary farmers, or were they just noting the passing of more prominent citizens? 3. Jane asked for information on Presbyterian Churches in Guilford County. A couple (John Staratt and wife Anne Gray Staratt) is buried at Haw River Presbyterian Church in Rockingham County with names similar to those she mentioned. John's parents were James STARATT (9/14/1806-8/14/1885) and Jane WALKER (12/14/1803- 8/14/1885). I believe Anne's father was Alexander Grey or Gray. Three Presbyterian churches had connections--Speedwell and Haw River in Rockingham County and Buffalo in Guilford Co (Greensboro). Members in our family intermarried with others in these three congregations. It might be good to check marriage bonds and cemetery records in both Guilford and Rockingham counties. I bet there's a Gray or Staratt out there today who know about Alexander Staratt and Nancy Gray.
