Hi List, Just to let you know, in case some of you have folks in Chatham Co. I have now put some of the early deeds on the county page. They aren't indexed, but are searchable, by using your "edit" and "find in page" options, in your tool bar. Hope this will help you all. I will get more up as I can get them typed up. Right now, I'm working on the marriage bonds from the microfilm. So many of you have expressed interest in them. Sue http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm

Several asked for the names I am researching, they are: ALEXANDER STARRETT (STARRATT, STARRITT, STERRETT, STERRATA AND OTHER VARIATIONS) BORN DECEMBER 4, 1808, GUILFORD CO. NC (ACCORDING TO 1850 CENSUS RECORDS) DIED FEBRUARY 24, 1881, EASTON, BUCHANAN CO. MO MARRIED NANCY GRAY BORN DECEMBER 12, 1814 IN GUILFORD CO. NC (ACCORDING TO 1850 CENSUS RECORDS) DIED SEPTEMBER 6, 1909, EASTON, BUCHANAN CO. MO. They were the parents of 11 children, including 2 who died in NC, Rowena Starrett b. 17-7-1837 d. 4-11-1837 and Theresa Starrett b. 14-7-1840 d. 27-7-1842 Greensboro. According to family legend, they were Scotch-Irish and Presbyterians. I have not been able to find any information on either Alexander or Nancy's parents, siblings etc. I have been looking for this family for almost 30 years, tried the LDS History Center, films, etc. but so far no luck. If any of this is familiar to anyone, please let me know. Thanks, Jane -- = MZ=90 --------------81B2EAB12BE--

There are a number of us researching Guilford Co and I have a great deal of information about the time from 1770 until 1900. I have the 1850 and 1860 census, as well as the 1800 and 1810. My wife's family also came from Guilford Co, so we have a double interest and double information. However, there is no way we can help you if you do not tell us the surnames. I am new to genealogy and to this list. After lurking for awhile, I still haven't seen my surnames, so I'm posting this request for information. Recently I have begun researching my paternal line, BURNETT/BURNETTE and my maternal line, HEADRICK/HEDRICK. The Greensboro and High Point libraries haven't been much help so far. I have found some information on the Internet for the Burnettes, but little on the Hedricks. My recent Burnette connections are in Haywood Co., NC, but I haven't made a connection to the Guilford County Burnettes yet. I have had even less luck with the Hedricks. Family stories indicate that my maternal grandfather's Hedricks were in Guilford and Davidson Counties, but I can't get back beyond my great great grandfather. Is there anyone else on the list who is researching these surnames? Dennis Burnette Greensboro, NC burnetted@aol.com

I have a copy of the 1850 census and have found my gggrandfather and family on it. From the information that I have they were in the Greensboro area at that time. They left NC in 1858 to come to MO. I would like to find their parents and any siblings. According to the census they were born in NC. Where would be the best place to start my search and what would be the best thing to explore to hopefully find this information? I have tried LDS films, going to libraries with information etc. We will not have a lot of time in NC, so want to use my time to the best advantage. Thanks for any help. Dear listers: Could someone possibly tell me what happened to Hannah Macy Wall who died in either Wayne County, IN in or near Williamsburg, Green Township, or Randolph County, IN? Hannah Macy Wall was the wife of Meindsy Wall, whom she married in Randolph County, NC on 1 November 1809. She married Meindsy Wall when she was 33 years old. I think this marriage was probably her 2nd marriage and probably his 2nd as well. I wonder if she had children from her first marriage. I also wonder if she had children with Meindsy Wall. I would be very interested in hearing from their descendants. She lived with Joseph Way and his wife Julia for at least 20 or more years after moving to Indiana with her sister Judith Macy Way. Joseph is listed in the 1850 Census in Williamsburg, Green Township, IN. Here is the listing on their household. I think Julia Way is probably the same woman as Judith Macy. Joseph Way also had been Alice Hiatt's husband, and probably had other previous wives as well according to the LDS data. I don't know if Julia/Judith Macy Way had any children with him. They are a big mystery to me. I went through a lot of effort to get all this data that I now have, including a 550 mile drive to Randolph County, NC. page 105 of Williamsburg, Green Township, Wayne County, IN the following: 428 428 Joseph Way, 70, Male, None, $250, N.C. Julia Way, 70, Female, N.C. Hannah Wall, 76, Female, N.C. Joseph Way Jr., 22, Male, Blacksmith, Ind. Hannah was also a Quaker, as was her sister. According to the women's minutes of Centre Monthly Meeting of Guilford County, NC, for 9th month, 1829, Hannah Walls requested to transfer her membership to Silver Creek Monthly Meeting in Union County, IN. During the same meeting, Judith Macy also requested her membership to be transferred to Silver Creek. The certificates for both women were produced, approved, and signed at the monthly meeting on the 17th of 10th month. There was also a request from Mary Dorothy in 9th month to transfer her membership from Centre to Springfield Monthly Meeting in Wayne County, IN. Judith Macy and Hannah Wall were "received on certificate from Centre Monthly Meeting end to Springfield Monthly Meeting" on 2/27/1830 at Silver Creek (IN) Monthly Meeting. There is no mention of either Judith or Hannah in the abstract to the Springfield (IN) Minutes. The Springfield women's minutes prior to 1843 have not survived. All of the above Indiana Quaker information is from Abstracts of the Records of the Society of Friends in Indiana, by Willard Heiss. Regards, Tim Walls
In April 2000 the University of North Carolina Press will publish a book entitled "The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: Western North Carolina in the Civil War," by John C. Inscoe and Gordon B. McKinney (both professors of history). Advance notice says that the book is 480 pages, and costs $39.95 (cloth). ISBN:0-8078-2544-1. "From the valleys of the French Broad and Catawba Rivers to the peaks of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the people of Western North Carolina responded to the war in dramatically different ways. Men and women, masters and slaves, planters and yeomen, soldiers and civilians, Confederates and Unionists, bushwhackers and home guardsmen, Democrats and Whigs--all their stories are told here," says the flier from the UNC Press. I have not seen the book yet myself, but it might be some of you would like to read or have your local library order it. I am not in any way connected to UNC. I do not know whether it will be also issued in paperback form. Betty Pace ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Dear Betty, I have David F. SMITH b. 1830 in Guilford Co,NC. He is the s/o Allen H. SMITH b. 1785 in Chatham Co. NC. I was wondering if Allen could have been the son of one of the Davids I have found in Chatham Co. I also found Peter SMITH in Chatham Co. at this time. I know what you mean about the SMITH name being hard to trace. My maiden name was SMITH also and of the top 4 most common names, I have 3 of them in my direct lines - SMITH, JONES and WILLIAMS. NO Browns. Any info on the David or Peter SMITHS, in your lines, would be helpful. Good hunting. Phyllis D. Pildot@atl.mediaone.net

I'm researching SAMUEL APPLE, b. abt. 1795 in Guilford, NC, son of JOHN APPLE and BARBARY (Mrs.) APPLE, m. ELIZABETH TAYLOR 4/23/1828 in Guilford, NC. Anybody else working on these names? Does anybody know parents and siblings' names, birth, and death dates? I have information to share.
Epaphroditus STONE d. July, 1811 in Caswell Co., NC. His will named wife, Lucy [unk.] and the following sons: (1) Tilman STONE (2) John STONE (3) Robert STONE (4) Peter STONE (5) James STONE It is thought that the second son was John D. STONE who was b. ca. 1800 and d. ca. 1859 in Rockingham Co., NC. However, a John STONE sold property in Caswell in 1786, and a John Stone patented land on the south fork of County Line Creek in 1788, and was probably the same man who did so on the same creek in 1802. This can't be the same John as John D. of Rockingham, but it just might have been the son of Epaphroditus, who had patented land on Hogans Creek? A William STONE patented land on Mill Stone Creek in Caswell Co. in 1779. This appears to have been the same William that was recorded in 1786 as having removed to Burke Co., GA. Who was this William? Does anyone know anything about a Ruth STONE of Person Co.? Please reply directly to my E-Mail below. Any help anyone can give will be most appreciated. Pam pamstone@digital.net
