Notice from www.ancestry.com. I have no connection to this company, nor do I know anything more about this project. Betty Pace - Norfolk, VA USA FORWARDED; 1890 CENSUS SUBSTITUTE See http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/1890sub/main.htm When a basement fire in the Commerce Building in Washington, D.C. destroyed most of the 1890 federal census, a valuable source of information was lost to researchers. Ancestry.com, with the aid of the National Archives and Records Administration and the Allen County Public Library, now provides the first definitive online substitute for the missing census. More than 20 million records have been included in the collection and additions will be made regularly as they become available for posting. The substitute Census will include fragments of the original 1890 census that survived the fire, special veterans schedules, several Native American tribe censuses for years around 1890, state censuses (1885 or 1895), city and county directories, alumni directories, and voter registration documents. When completed, this collection will be an unparalleled tool for researchers of American ancestors. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hello, I am new to this list and was wondering if anyone has any information on Sarah Spinks that m. George Hunsucker? Both bc 1775 and lived in Moore Co., NC. Thanks, Joy Charleston, SC
I am looking for an obit for a Stephen GALES d March 14, 1919, in Guilford County, Gilmer Twp, Denim, NC. I am willing to pay for copies, mailing, gas etc. thank you, Windy Gales Gale List Hostess
I am looking for a Poole & Blue Funeral home/Undertaker in Greensboro. I know there isn't any listing for it now. My gggrandfather went through there in 1919. My question is would someone know who might have bought them out? Or where their records might be? Thanks in advance Windy
Would like help sorting the various REEDS in Guilford County. Anybody game? Thanks Tom
> Is this unique to Guilford Co. NC, or >was the county of birth added later (after the census was taken). In >other words, can the county of birth be trusted? I have seen several counties (and not only in NC) where the census taker listed the county of birth if born in that state (in this case NC), and then listed the state or country of birth if not a native of the state. These census takers were the exception. Can the information be trusted? It's just like any other census information, (names, ages, state of birth) it depends on the knowledge of the person that gave the information. Rick Saunders
A genealogist in Guilford Co. provided me with an excerpt from the 1850 Guilford census. This version (limited to my PACE people) also gave the county of birth for the people involved. I haven't seen this on any other county census for that year. Is this unique to Guilford Co. NC, or was the county of birth added later (after the census was taken). In other words, can the county of birth be trusted? Betty Pace - Norfolk, VA ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hello list, I've just put up a new link on the Chatham Co., N.C., page. Some of you may not know about it and will find it very helpful. It is the new 'Migrations' link now maintained by USGenWeb volunteers. It is a terrific way to track your ancestors. Please use it to submit your families, too. Please visit the page to try it out. Is anyone on this list researching the CUMMINGS family of Guilford County? I have a autograph book dated 1891 where Florence CUMMINGS wrote a verse to my grandmother. May 6, 1891 Dear Minnie, "In memories casket drop one pearl for your friend" A. Florence Cummings Salem College, NC I would like to know who this Florence married and the year of her death, I know that my grandmother died first in 1944 and Florence placed a pearl in her casket. My now deceased aunt Evelyn Tillman, told me in 1991 that they placed a pearl in the casket of Florence in memory of my grandmother. Any descendants of Florence CUMMINGS, members of this mailing list? Thanks, Lou
Does anyone know what is meant by General Hospital #6 in Goldsboro, N. C. My ggrandfather was discharged from the Confederate Army, Co. F, 2nd N. C. Cavalry (19 State Troops) on account of disability on 1 June 1862. His records go on to indicate that he died in General Hospital #6 on 28 June 1862. Does anyone know what happens to the dead soldiers that died in such facilities. If the families didn't claim the bodies, were they put in a "potter's field"? Were records kept to that effect? Otis Fowler
To respond to Betty Pace's question about marriage bonds. I don't think N. C. had marriage certificates until 1850. Anyone married before that received marriage bonds. Otis Fowler

In June of 1999, I posted the following message to the Cabarrus Co. NC Query Forum: "JULIA ANN REED was born I believe in Cabarrus (Concord), NC 1823-25. We do not know the name of her parents, but since the name of her only child was JOHN FLETCHER PACE, we think perhaps her father might have been a JOHN REED or a FLETCHER REED. In 1843 JULIA ANN REED married ABNER PACE in Guilford Co., NC, and they moved to Rowan Co. NC. At the time of the 1870 Rowan census a 36-year-old CATHERINE (or a M. CATHERINE--illegible) REED,[ born around 1836] was living with Abner and Julia Pace in Rowan Co., NC. She is probably Julia Ann's sister." (revised slightly) The following response to my above query was posted on 19 March 2000: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Cabarrus/?read=940 QUOTE: "SUBJECT; REED Posted by Monica <mcrayton@vnet.net> on Sun. 19 Mar 2000 Surname: CRAYTON, LITTLE, DRAKE, MCLAIN, HARVELL JOHN REED, owner of the Cabarrus Co. I know there was a Henry Reed whose unnamed wife died in Guilford Co. NC (Patriot article) in 1842. Could he be tied to the Cabarrus Reeds? I knew there was a Reed gold mine in Rowan Co. but I had not been aware of one also in Cabarrus Co. NC. Why would someone in 1843 choose to marry via marriage bond and not by banns, especially if the young couple were probably poor people? How much did a marriage bond cost in 1843 My ABNER PACE (b. 1821-23) was an orphan in 1837 when he was apprenticed to saddlemakers Hiatt and Jean in Guilford Co. NC. He served that apprenticeship until of age, and in 1843 he married JULIA ANN REED (b.1823-25) in Guilford by marriage bond. The bondsman for this marriage was RICHARD MINER. The young couple moved almost immediately to Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC, where Abner Pace was a harness maker. I have been unable to find the parents' names for either of them, despite searching the court records at the time of Abner's apprentice bond hearing and for five years before--no mention of parents. Hi All, I've put a couple of new links on the Chatham page. I've been working on getting maps up but, still don't have good ones for waterways. I do have some new maps though and you might get something out of them. Sue A. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm
