    3. I got several replies from Rowan Roots, some a little contradictory. Apparently if you can get the record from the Railroad Board (federal govt) for $16, you will get a very fully folder of the different railroads, dates, places of employment--these men tended to move a lot. >From what I can tell, even people under a railroad pension plan (which paid better) still had to register for a SS number, and apparently that number is what you need to get a search of the rr board records. You might try: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm >From there, you can get a link to rootsweb SS index (not complete), and this appears to be fuller than the one on Ancestry.com. I think I may have found my fellow's SS number and month/year of death, but not sure yet. This registration appears to have been in 1937 for everyone, not in 1933 as I assumed. Others have told me that from the rr board they got a full record of which railroad in which year etc. I would love to have this and will probably order from the board now that I have the SS number. If you are interested in railroads in the New England area, try: http://www.rrhistorical.com/rrdata/ Betty On Mon, 10 Apr 2000 08:35:29 -0700 "Tegwin Matenaer" <tegwinart@snowcrest.net> writes: >did you ever get a reply to this? 2. Sue
    3. Hello list(s) I have just added a new section to the Chatham Co., page. I've extracted all the free blacks in the first half of the 1850 census and listed them separately, and the families they were enumerated with. It makes it much easier to find them and see the relationships. Hope this will help some one who is searching for their ancestors of black or mixed heritage. I am asking for anyone who has old bible records that have the slaves listed in the bible, to please contact me with the information. I have quite a few names in an old bible that I have access to and plan on extracting that. I would like to have any other that you would be willing to send me.. Thanks, Sue Ashby http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncchatha/chatham.htm

    3. In 1933 when the Social Security system was begun, apparently employees of the railroads were exempt. Therefore, they never participated in the Social Security program and have no records there. How did railroad retirement work? Was it a separate federal program or was there a pension fund handled by each individual railroad company? Where would these records be held? 2. Dwight Ozment
    3. To: NCGUILFO-L/post From: Dwight Ozment <dwozment@worldnet.att.net> Subject: PHIBBS-MAXWELL-HOLLOWAY-OZMENT Hi, Rachel I don't have anything about PHIBBS or MAXWELL families. However, I do have a Martha HOLLOWAY in my database. This Martha HOLLOWAY was born 12 Dec 1804, Guilford Co., NC and died 28 April 1849, Wilson Co., TN. She married James H. OZMENT 25 May 1825 in TN. Her parents were Levi and Judith HOLLOWAY. She died two months after her 10th child, John W. OZMENT was born. Could your PHIBBS surname possibly been spelled PHIPPS? I do have a Martha E. PHIPPS (b. 27 Oct 1822, Guilford Co., NC ; d. 20 July 1886, Guilford Co., NC). She married Calvin OZMENT 20 Aug 1839, Guilford Co., NC. I do not have anything on Martha PHIPPS' parents. If you are interested in any of these folks, please contact me. Dwight dwozment@worldnet.att.net

    1. [NCGUILFO] ROLL CALL - PACE, REED, MINER
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. My ancestor was ABNER PACE, 16 years old in 1837 when named an apprentice orphan to saddlemakers Hiatt & Jean in Guilford Co., NC; thus he was born around 1821-23. Other orphan Paces apprenticed in the same time frame were: Needham, Young, Absalom, Wiseman, Geo. Washington (called "Johnson), and Pace girls Lively and Edy. Associated with Needham and Young Pace was a Ziltha/Zelpha Pace (b. around 1800); around 1858 she went with Needham and Young Pace to Mecklenburg Co., NC, along with her retarded son David Pace. I do not know what the relationship was between these Paces, but I think the tie was a family one since Young Pace named one of his sons Abner Pace. In 1843 ABNER PACE married JULIA ANN REED (b. around 1823-25) in Guilford Co. They immediately moved to Rowan Co., where they had a son named JOHN FLETCHER PACE (1844-1901). When Abner and Julia Ann were married, the bondsman at their wedding was a Richard Miner (could be misspelled). I do not know the relationship between bride and groom and Mr. Miner. I am interested in finding the names of the parents of my orphan ABNER PACE and his wife JULIA ANN REED. Julia Ann Reed had a young sister (CATHERINE or M. C. CATHERINE REED) born about 1830; she lived with them in Rowan Co., NC at the time of the 1870 census.
