Posted on: Guilford Co. NC Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Guilford?read=1357 Surname: TALLEY, WRIGHT ------------------------- Through much research, I have found Obediah TALLEY's father and Grandfather's names! Here is my line; 1. Nicholas TALLEY born 1730 in Louisa Co., VA Wife; Mary My GreatGreatGreatGreatGrandparents. 2. John TALLEY born 1767 in NC., Wife; Janey EAKES. My GreatGreatGreatGrandparents. 3. Obediah D. TALLEY born July 29, 1805 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Wife (1)Sarah PARKER with whom he had ten children. (2) Mary M. EPLING. Obediah and Sarah were my GreatGreatGrandparents. 4. Andrew Jackson TALLEY born in 1835 in TN. Wife; Perneca. They had two sons. Andrew Sherman TALLEY born 1871, and William David TALLEY born July 17, 1876. Andrew and Perneca were my GreatGrandparents. 5. William David TALLEY born July 17, 1876; Wife; Mary Ida KELSEY born October 19, 1876. Both died in 1945. Their residence was in Neelyville, Mo. They were laid to rest in Oak Grove Cemetery near Doniphan, Mo. William and Mary were my Grandparents. I ordered and received two volumes of back-issues of the Guilford County Genealogical Society of North Carolina, and found a wealth of information on my TALLEY's. There was a lawsuit by a neighbor of John TALLEY's accusing his children and a son-in-law, Moses Henry WRIGHT of Assault and Riot, and two of John's daughters accused by the same neighbor of Assault and Battery. At the first trial, John's daughters, Elizabeth TALLEY WRIGHT and Mary TALLEY, were found guilty. But they took the case to the Superior Court, and the case was dismissed. The lawsuit concerning the TALLEY's and Moses WRIGHT was a long drawn out battle. In the end, the TALLEY's and Moses WRIGHT were found Not Guilty of any wrong. The cost of the lawsuit, what with bond money and other legal expenses, cost their father, John TALLEY to lose his 296 acre farm. Some list John as having died in North Carolina....but I would like to see a legal document on this, as I have found on census records and deed records in Allen County, KY., where a John TALLEY purchased land next to Obediah's-(His son).....and found him on census records next to him, as well. After Moses WRIGHT, his wife Elizabeth TALLEY WRIGHT and her sister, Mary left NC., they moved to Sullivan County, TN., and then moved and settled to Crawford County, Mo. This is really ironic, because I only live about 50 miles from where they lived and died! They are buried in these Cemeteries, just north of Cuba, Mo.-------WRIGHT's MILL CEMETERY------AND---- BURLEY CEMETERY. I have found two new cousins, one in Cuba, Missouri, and one in St. Peters, Mo., due to the information in the books from Guilford County, NC. Mary never married. There is a story handed down about her. When she was young, she had two suitors. She was told that she had to choose between them, so she chose. On her wedding day, the rejected suitor shot through a window and killed her intended husband. After her sister, Elizabeth died, Moses drew up a will leaving his estate to Mary until she married or upon her death. In his will, he referred to Mary as his "Beloved Sister-In-Law". If anyone has any more information on this TALLEY line, I would love to hear from you! I would love to know Nicholas TALLEY's parents and siblings! I am looking for the parents of Hannah (aka Molly) Clark born abt 1848 in Guilford married on 13 oct 1869 to William Thadeus May. Also looking for Anna Barbara Ingold married to John Smith.
You might also want to look at the two censuses involved, to see when they were taken. If the Randolph County census was taken in August, but the Henry Co IN census was taken in April, you may never find your missing relatives in a census. If they left after their mom's death in April, and the IN census had already been taken, it would be expected that you not find them anywhere in a census. Barbara Weaver bkw@apaynet.com
I have the exact same problem that Ruth does in finding some people on the 1870 Census. My Wiley WALL/WALLS is in Randolph County in 1830, Guilford in 1840, Randolph in 1850 and 1860, and disappeared. His son Brazilla was listed in Henry Co., IN in 1870, 1880 and 1920. But my great grandfather, William F. Walls, who came to Indiana with Wiley Walls, his grandfather, is nowhere to be found in 1870 at age 8 nor can we find his grandparents Wiley and Jereter. I located William at age 18 in 1880, Henry County, IN right where he should have been. Since his mother (Hannah Walls, unmarried) died in April 1870 in the area of northern Randolph County and was buried in Providence Friends Cemetery, I tend to think that Wiley and Jereter left shortly after and maybe were en route to Indiana. But....I didn't yet check the states in between NC and Indiana. And we do have Jereter's grave in Henry County, died 1876, so I know at least she made it safely to Indiana. And we do have a photograph of Wiley in which he looks about age 70, which would be about 1870. It is a tintype, about 1 1/2" wide by 2 1/2 inches high and his cheeks were very slightly colorized. The paper frame it came in had an oval circle to show the picture. I wonder if it was taken in NC or Indiana, and what year it was taken. (if anyone wants to see the photo I can email a copy) Regards, Tim > Subject: [NCGUILFO] New to List- help please > Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 23:06:23 EDT > From: RLugowski@aol.com > To: NCGUILFO-L@rootsweb.com > > Hi everyone, > > I'm new to the Guilford County list and am hoping someone can help me. No offense intended or implied to our Friends out there. These folks were neither part of New Garden MM group nor of the Quaker persuasion. Thanks. Tom

In Oct of 1998, I was to learn that research done for over 35 years had been rid off by The Family Tree Maker, the Broderbund Software Co. Having mentioning this on other lists I found many that had been done the same. Hi everyone, I'm new to the Guilford County list and am hoping someone can help me. I am researching the MCFARLAIN/MCFARLAN/MCFARLAND family in Guilford Co. in the late 1700's - 1860. The furthest I have back is John MCFARLAND b. 1800 in Guilford Co., m. a Sarah D. ??? b. 1806, Guilford Co., (only know this from the census) on the 1850 census they had 8 children, first one born in 1826, last one born 1850. On the 1860 census they had 2 more children, born in Guilford Co. On the 1870 census they are nowhere to be found. On the 1880 census, Marion Co., IN, I find one son, no one else in this family. I have been told there was a big migration from NC during the Civil War. I have checked Civil War records, and nothing, yet the males were of the age to serve in the Civil War. I have checked the 1870 census records for many states that they would have travelled through and can find them nowhere. Is it possible they were in transit when the 1870 census was taken? Where could a whole family go? I realize the females in this family could have gotten married and I don't know how to find them. I am on the NC-L, MCFARLAND-L and IN-L, MARION-L, no one seems to know this family. I have searched every genealogy site on the web and still nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction for further research. I don't know where to look next. Thank you for reading this and any help anyone can offer. It is greatly appreciated. I am more than willing to share what small amount of info. I have. Ruth in NC e-mail: RLugowski@aol.com
