This is a side-note to the thread I copied below from the Guilford Co. mailing list just received. I have today started reading a library book entitled "Unruly Women:the Politics of Social and Sexual Control in the Old South," by Victoria E. Bynum, pub'd by UNC Press, Chapel Hill in 1992. It really covers a later period in history than the one the below message pertain to. According to this book, there was a DELPHINA MENDENHALL, "an educated, well-do-do woman from an illustrious Quaker family, [who] helped organize an underground movement of slaves to the North that was very active in Randolph County NC" in the 1850s . "Her unwavering antislavery convictions may have influenced her husband, a slaveholding lawyer who had fallen away from the Quaker faith, to defend the Rev. Crooks and McBride against the state's charges of sedition. Immediately following her husband's death in 1860, Delphina Mendenhall freed the slaves he had passed on to her." This is the only reference to the name Mendenhall in the book's index, and her husband's first name is not given. I have only begun the book, but I believe the two Reverends must have been active abolitionists in the NC Piedmont before the Civil War. Betty Pace Prior messages:

I too wondered how a Quaker could own slaves, but we are indeed talking about the same George C. Mendenhall. I have a copy of the emancipation papers that he drew up when he sent 28 slaves to Ohio in 1854. They arrived in 1855. He wrote that he could no longer morally own human beings and seemed to have wrested with this dilema for awhile. It is also documented that he tried to make sure that the slaves had a trade or a skill that would be useful for them to support themselves once they were freed. Apparently when George C. died unexpectantly, his son from his first marriage tried to contest his second wife, Delphne's right to emancipate the slaves that were left on the plantation. I am trying to find out if there are any records of his contesting of the will or if there are any more records on Eliza Dunn's birth place and her father's name. I know this would not be in Quaker records, as she was not a Quaker. I was able to come to Jamestown this past spring and searched the records at Guilford College and High Point and Greensboro libraries. Everyone has been very helpful with my search. If you every come across any information that you feel could be helpful, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for your response. Kay Mason

Mendenhall who was dismissed from the Friends church in 1824 for marrying out of unity. This would mean his wife was not a Quaker, and could be your George C. and Eliza Dunn. However, I can't imagine that a Quaker man in this period would marry someone who owned slaves. So either George C. was a very strange Quaker (and he married a second time to another Quaker, so I doubt he left the church entirely), or his wife didn't own any slaves.
Last night on the Antique Road Show they had a man with his gggrandfather's parole paper from Appomattox in April 1865, signed by his commanding general (Gen. Wilcox of Confederate forces) . This particular one had the stamps to authorize safe passage through federal lines to some place in the South; because he was an officer he got to keep his horse, but enlisted personnel had to walk or hitch a ride on a train. I wondered how many of these are still in a soldier's family. They are valued at $5000.00 at auction, if anyone cares to sell. Does anyone have any information about Wilson Yarbrough or Neomi Spoon and their ancestors? They were married in Guilford, North Carolina on January 06, 1825.
