    1. [NCGUILFO] Wills
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. If a will was written in 1767 but not probated until 1775, what would the time lag mean? Could a person have actualy died in 1767 and the will not go for probate until 7 years later? Or could it be that the will was written in 1767, but the person didn't die until closer to 1775. Does anyone know the usual time lag between death and probate in Rowan Co NC or Guilford Co NC? 3. Posted on: Guilford Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Guilford/1485 Surname: WILEY, HANCOCK ------------------------- Looking for any information about Thomas Wiley born 1809 in Guilford, Co. N.C., married Martha Ann Hancock in 1835 in Guilford, Co., N.C. then was listed in the Jefferson Co. MO census of 1850. Was reported by my grandfather to have had 6 brothers and one sister and to have seen one brother (reported to be a taylor by trade) in St. Louis, Mo around 1850 then moved to Barry Co, MO and never saw brother again. Have no names for any brothers but sister's name was Ascenith, married Hall. I know Wiley is hard to trace because there were so many of them and they were all named Thomas. LOL! Any help would be appreciated.

    1. [NCGUILFO] MAP of Guilford Co., NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I have a photo program that came with my computer. If the map is a .jpg file (which it probably is if scanned), you should be able to use a photo program to size the map small enough to print (of course, you lose detail). I think another solution would be to use the photo program to divide the map into sections and print each separately, pasting them together afterwards. It is also possible that a photo shop or a copy shop could take your disk and print the image on very large paper. That will cost a "little more." Betty Pace - Norfolk, VA <snip>

    3. I have the 1850 Guilford census just now and noticed some are listed as laborers and others as hirelings. Can someone tell me the difference? I found a Guilford census index of surnames but is there an index of individuals for 1850? So far I have noticed 2 districts, the southern and the northern, does anyone know where the division line was. I haven't gone all the way thru the census yet so there may be others and I don't know about them yet. Some of the names included are LOW, FOGALMAN, CLAP, ISLEY, WHITESELL, COBLE, COBBLE, BOON, MORROW, McCOMBS, EWING, STARR, KIME, ALCORN, GLASS, STALEY, INGOLD and many other individuals as well as Churches, Encampments,Mills, Paths, etc. Dates from about 1750 to the late 1700's are given beside the person's name. I have asked the person who sent me it if I may forward this to to researchers on other lists and was given permission. Write personally to me at ddavis@logicsouth.com and I will send it to you.

    3. Posted on: Guilford Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Guilford/1477 Surname: ------------------------- This excerpt is from page 21 in the book "Greensboro an Architectural Record" by Marvin A. Brown: "Greensboro's few houses still standing from the 1870's are all handsome and substantial. Most are constructed of brick, an uncommon residential building material locally until the 20th century. Their owners were enchanted by the same Italianate and Gothic Revival styles that had captivated their antebellum predecessors. William Fields, a tobacco merchant and small landholder, built a picturesque, one-and-one-half story brick dwelling on Arlington Street in Shieldstown in the late 1870's. Its T-plan, lancet-arched windows, and steeply pitched gables and dormers illustrate the domestic Gothic Revival style." A picture of the house is shown on page 23 of the same book. The house is for sale through the Olde Greensborough Preservation Society. If you would like more info, let me know.

    1. [NCGUILFO] Confederate Soldiers
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I found this information on the Guilford Co., NC web page (one of the links to Confederate information). Pasted below is information on books and other resources. Betty Pace Note for further research...... Pension records may be available for these soldiers. Such records often contain detailed information about the solider. To determine if such records exist and to obtain copies, contact: N.C. State Archives. Phrase your question: Do you have a record of Confederate military service for [the name you are researching]. For more information about N.C. State Archives' query policies, visit the web site. Searching for Civil War soldiers has been made considerably easier with the 1996 publication of the multi-volume reference set, The Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865, ed. by Janet B. Hewett, pub. 1996 Barefoot Publishing Co., Wilmington, N.C. In this reference set, soldiers are listed alphabetically by surname, with state, regiment and company given. If your soldier served in NC, you may then consult the multi-volume reference set, North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865, published by NC Archives & History, which details each N.C. regiment and lists the soldiers in each of the companies' regiments. *Note: I have found some soldiers listed with companies in NC Troops: 1861-1865 who were *not* listed in The Roster of Confederate Soldiers. If you can determine which regiments and companies were formed in the area where your soldier resided, I would suggest you consult NC Troops: 1861-1865 even if your soldier was not listed in The Roster of Confederate Soldiers. These reference sets are available at NC Archives in Raleigh and at many large libraries. If your library does not have these sets, the librarian should be able to help you locate the most convenient library collection which houses them. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
