Marsha, The Macys, Nathaniel & Paul, who witnessed the will of James Martin (1796, Guilford Co.) very likely came from Nantucket Island, MA. Some Macy families went from Guilford Co., to Lost Creek, Jefferson Co., TN and on to Henry, Wayne and Randolph Counties, IN. Hope this helps. Evelyn Thoes
I have tried searching the on-line LDS catalog to find the film numbers for the Wardens of the Poor for Guilford Co., NC for the period 1820-1840. I can't seem to work the catalog--I searched under court records, but perhaps that is incorrect. I finally got lost in it. Has anyone any advice as how to find the film numbers for the Wardens of the Poor? I need to order these thru my local LDS family history center. I have noticed that a DAVID SCHMIDT/SMITH is often included among SCHMIDT lines. However, it has struck me that the name David is not really German. I have only checked a few church records, but I haven't seen a David yet on the actual German records. Is there a German equivalent for the name David? For instance, in German the name John is actually Johann or Johannes. What is the German for David? Looking for James B. White in Surry/Stokes/Forsyth/Guilford (and Rockingham) Counties in N.C. He was b. 1812/1817. We believe he grew up in Stokes. He was married there in 1837 to Sarah Ledbetter and when she died he later married Eliza Shields in Guilford County. We THINK his father's name was John Timothy White. He may have gone by John, or Timothy White. They were Quakers early on. Please respond with any information you may have about Whites who were Quakers in the Stokes/Rockingham,etc. area. Thank you. sarah

Hello Everyone, I have been trying to find out more about a James MARTIN family that lived in Guilford Co, ca: 1750 - 180?. These MARTINs were originally Quakers (I have found some information on them in the Quaker records.) I would like to know where they migrated from. The one that I'm trying to locate information on is James MARTIN whose will was probated Feb., 1796 in Guilford Co. Wife's name: Mary Sons: John, James and Henry. Daughters: Francis MARTIN, Mary BEESON and Hannah SILLIVAN (SULLIVAN?) Executors of his will were Nathaniel MACY, Paul MACEY. Witnesses: Joseph IDDINGS, Nathaniel MOORE and Samuel LAMB. These Beeson's and Macy's may have migrated to Ohio ca. 1807. Frances MARTIN (above) was the second wife of my ancestor, John PAVEY, who she married in Jan., 1801 in Guilford Co. I would like to know Hannah's husband's given name also. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. We believe that this Rebecca may have been the dau. of the Levin WILLIAMS that I am looking for. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marsha McWilliams

Posted on: Guilford Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Guilford/1585 Surname: STARRETT, GRAY ------------------------- Have you looked at the Heiritage Books? Many of the North Carolina Counties have published books that give a great deal of information on their early families. I have seen them at Sutro Library in San Francisco and the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. If you haven't seen the one for the county you are interested in I think you will be pleasanty surprised. Good luck.
I am continuing my search for the parents of my ancestor, John McFarland, of Guilford County, North Carolina. The only information I have is from the 1850 Guilford County census which indicates that he was born about 1799-1800 in Guilford County. Recently I obtained the 1820 Guilford County census and the only McFarland listed is Larkin McFarland. The ages of the males in the household does not correspond to John's age at the time but I am wondering if he could have moved out of the county and then back. Does anyone have any information on Larkin McFarland that might prove or disprove his kinship with my John McFarland. Many thanks. Conni in Ohio

How would the 1870 or 1880 census in have been taken? Was a printed questionnaire given out before census day and just picked up on census day? Who actually filled in the census form?--the census taker or the householder? If it was the census taker, did he stand there and question the party answering his knock on the door? Or did he merely pick up the completed form and compile his report later? My questions arise from wondering if the census taker took his answers from a perhaps hastily completed form supplied by someone in the household, or did he attempt to verify in some way the answers on the questionnaire. Researching the Sutz (Suits, Soots) family in Guilford County in the 1700-1800s - specifically Tobias Sutz, who I believe to be the father of Sarah (or Sally) b. 1807. The Sutz name appears in some Brick Church records, I believe, as well as in the Guilford Co. census of 1850 and 1860. Related names: Powell (husband of Sarah), Neese, Franck, Westmoreland.
