    3. Sue went over to Duke on Monday and got this from microfilm. It is from Greene Co, Ga records and although it is Pitt most of these families spilled over into Greene and descendants are today in Lenoir. I am interested in the relationship of all these people especially the Bryans and Pughs since I have a Pugh/Bryan marriage and can't prove the earlier Bryan line. We really appreciate Sue doing this but as she said, it is going to take more work. Martha X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express Macintosh Edition - 4.5 (0410) Date: Mon, 03 Sep 2001 19:17:10 -0400 Subject: Greene Co. GA From: "Sue Guptill" <[email protected]> To: Martha Marble <[email protected]> Martha, Perkins Library was open, and I actually got a (free) parking place on West Campus. This is one of the miracles of modern times. It was too bad I couldn't take a picture of my car actually parked there, because my husband doesn't believe me. Anyhow, I'm not sure if this is going to help or add to your frustration, but here it is: > Duke Special Collections > Perkins Library > Microfilm call #104-07-3 > Collection: Georgia, Greene County > Land Conveyances, 1792-1802 > > Book M, p. 52 > State of North Carolina > Pitt Co. > > Know all men by these presents that we Simon BURNEY, Hugh PUGH, Furna > CANNON, Lewis Cox BRYANT, and Shadrack ALLEN gardians to Hardy BURNEY and > Shadrack BURNEY all the county and state aforesaid have constututed and > made and opointed and by these presents do constitute, make, and opoint my > Trustee and loving friend Hardy HANDCOCK of the County State aforesaid our > True and Lawfull attorney for us and in our name and stead and to our use > to ask demand sue levy recover and receive all such sum and levy of money > Debts Rents Goods wears dues accounts and other Demands whatsoever which > are and shall be due owing payable and belonging to us or detained from us > by any of ways or manners or means whatsoever by granting unto our sd. > attorney by these presents our full and whole power strength and authority > in and abought the premises to have use & take all lawfull ways and means > in our name for the Recovery thereof and upon the Receipt of any such debts > dues or soms of money aforesaid acquitance or other sufficient discharge > from us & in our name to make seal & Deliver Generly all & every other act > or acts thing or things devise or devised in the Law whatsoever Needfull & > Neccesary to be done in & about the premises for us and in our Names to do > Execute and preform as fully and leagly and amply to all Intent and > purposes as in our selves might or would do if we wear personaly presents > and had done the same or if the mater should Require more Speshal authority > then is hereing attorney one or more under our said attorney Hardy HANDCOCK > for the purpose aforesaid to make and Constutute & again at pleasure to > Revoke Rataifying allowing and holding for Firm & Effectual do in & abought > the premises by virture whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seal > this fourth day of Febuary in the year our Lord one thousand eight Hundard > and in the year of American Independance the XXIV. > > Simon BURNE > Signd seald & Deliverd Hugh PUGH > In the presents of Furna CANNON > Lewis Cox BRYAN > Shadrick ALLAN > Guardian of Hardy BURNE and > Lewis CANNON Shadrick BURNE > Henry SMITH > > Pitt County 12th February 1800 > I certify that Lewis CANNON and Hardy SMITH Esquires are acting Justices of > the County of Pitt > Witness my hand and seal of the court the day &c year above written. > George EVANS CC > Regrestard the 16th May 1800 PARKS [smudged] Clk The way I interpret this is that all of the men mentioned lived in Pitt Co., as does Hardy Handcock. They must have come into property in Greene Co., and Hardy Handcock went there to take care of it. It could certainly well be that some of the men were husbands of the real heirs. It seems likely that he sold the property, so there might be another deed somewhere else. I asked the librarian if there was a deed index, and he said he didn't think so, but by the time I got home, he had called and left a message that he had found one. I wish I had known, so that I could have at least looked at it while I still had a good parking place! Sue
