    3. Just found this on the Pope GenForum. Knew there was a Jesse Pope for a short time in Greene but knew nothing about him. He was on the 1816 Tax List. Disharoon is not a name one would forget and I have never heard of it. Wonder what his relationship was to old John and Mary Pope who had a son Redding. Martha Old message Jesse Pope born Nov. 5, 1791 in Va. married Elizabeth Disharoon in Green County N.C. They settled in Twiggs County, Ga. in 1816 then moved to Wilcox Co., Ga. in 1846, settling in Pineview. They helped organize Pope's Church, now Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and are buried there. Jesse served in the War of 1812. The Popes are mentioned in 'The Passing of the Pines' by Mary Lou McDonald. Jesse's children include Winifred, Redmond, Redding, Turner, Reuben, John Miller, David Bynum and Benjamin Franklin. Answer There is a Pope message list at rootsweb. I and several researchers have been trying to sort out the Popes for several years. There is a bible record for a Nathaniel Pope m. Mary O'Neal that we believe to be parents of Jesse Pope who m. Disharoon. We believe Nathaniel's fa. is Jesse Pope who d. 1791 in Southhamptom Va and left his land in Va to son Nathaniel. As you know, Jesse has stated in census and other records that he was b. in Va. The Jesse Pope who d. 1791 is descending from Wm Pope of Isle of Wight/Southhamptom co Va. Janice

    3. Martha-- Regarding the surnames of Pope and Disharoon in Greene Co., NC, I thought I would comment that these surnames, along with other NC surnames of Savage and Knight, are prominently found as early settlers of Warren County, TN, in the early 1800s. These families went from NC > GA > Middle TN. There are short summaries of these families' histories in the book "Beersheba Springs: A History and a Celebration" if anyone is interested. Beersheba Springs is a community in present-day Grundy Co., TN, which was originally part of old Warren County.
