I found a very old picture in the bottom of my mothers cedar chest and of course no one knows who it is. It was given to her by her aunt Mamie Boykin Corbett when my mother was married fourty years ago. Mamie was from Wilson County N.C. and married John William Corbett from the Walstonburg area in Greene County N.C. There is a signature on the back but I am unable to read it. I have posted the signature on back of the picture before hoping someone could tell me what it is and got a lot of suggestions but nothing I that led back to a name I could trace down. I have now scanned and posted the picture though the picture is in pretty bad shape. It can be seen at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pics Click on Unknown 5 to see the signature on back and Click on Unknown6 to see the picture itself. If anyone can identify this person please contact me at [email protected] Thanks, Chris

Happy Summer everyone, Thank goodness for the Doughboy pool in our back yard. Most of you have probably heard about the 4 firefighters who died fighting the forest fire. It has hit our community hard. Our area is not that big. One of the men treated and released was here. Three of the dead were from surrounding communities and those who didn't know the firefighters probably know someone who did. It is quite a tragedy. All Barrs has updated the BARRS and BELL Surname Project on Old Dobbers: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paday/dobbers/1barrs_bell.htm He has done a great job and looks forward to hearing from other family researchers. He was very patient with me as my mailbox kept filling up on him. I have a 6mb email limit at yahoo. I need to empty out the old messages that I have there. FYI if you have attatchments of 1mb or more to send, please let me know before sending and I will make sure the room is there or give you another address to use. Sue has sent three more New Bern District Court Records and they can be found in the Craven Co. Archives. She is a real trooper to take on the challenge of transcribing these items for us. Thank you Sue. Our counties are fortunate to have the people who are willing to transcribe records for posting. Thank you for taking the time away from your personal research to assist those of us who live far away and do not have access to these documents. Martha does a great job of coordinating this effort and keeping you supplied with documents. Everybody PAT yourselves on the back and please know how much you are appreciated. Sammy, You do appear to be missing another generation. If one assumes that Edward II named the children in his will according to their age, then Dennis was the 2nd oldest. There were three girls between Dennis and my Henry indicating Henry was more or less 7 to 8 years younger. I don't know when Henry's daughter, Penelope ?, who married Hugh Pugh, was born, but Hugh was born in 1711. Hugh Jr was born CA 1735 if I remember correctly so Penelope would have been born by 1717 or so depending on the birth order of Hugh Jr. It is a serious stretch to think she had a first cousin who was the son of her older uncle who was not born until 1750. Dennis Dolly died CA 1687 and the way his will reads, his daughter Sarah had just married Edward II in 1686 when the will was written. That would indicate if Dennis was the 2nd child he was born ca 1690. He would have been 60 years old by the time your Lewis was born. Possible but not likely. Guess it is back to the drawing board for you. You have done a nice job with your database. I have yet to get to the Cannons and probably won't do much on the later generations since I come out of the family so early. Martha, I have Lewis Cannon's father as Dennis Cannon, son of Edward II and Sarah Dawley, but I have doubts that is correct. I'll send you what I have. I have notes I received a couple of years ago from you and Nula Tingleff; quite extensive for Edward I and Edward II. If I'm missing anything, please let me know. Also, if you think I'm incorrect thinking I'm missing a generation between Dennis and Edward II, please let me know. The numbers just don't look right for the time involved; i.e., about 100 years for Edward II, Dennis and Lewis. I would expect 4 or 5 generations over that span. Thanks for your help. Debbie, I have Lewis James Johnson the son of Hardee Johnson (Johnston), Sr., b. Abt 1774 Pitt Co., d. 1826 Pitt Co. and Katherine Cannon, b. 1774 Pitt Co., d. 1852 Pitt Co. Siblings were Hardee (Hardy) Johnson, Jr., b. 27 Sep 1809, Cannon Johnson, b. Bef 1810, Jemima Johnson, b. Bef 1810, William Johnson, b. Abt 1810, Julia Ann Johnson, b. Abt 1818, Susan Johnson, b. Bef 1820 and Anna Catherine Johnson, b. Abt 1820. Hardee Johnston, Sr. was the son of James Johnston, Jr., b. 1754, d. Oct 1817 Pitt Co. and Mary "Polly" Jordan, b. Bef 1756 and d. Aft 1816. James Johnston, Sr., b. Bef 1736 and d. Aft 1781 Pitt Co. was in Edgecombe Co. in 1761. In 1762 he purchased land in Pitt Co. from John Wooten on John Williams Mill Creek near Faulkland. He was in the 1764 Pitt Co. tax list. Mary "Polly" Jordan's father, Richard Jordan, b. Abt 1730, d. ?, also moved from Edgecombe to Pitt Co. He first purchased land in Pitt Co. from the same John Wooten in 1768 and was a neighbor of James Johnston, Sr. Katherine Cannon was the daughter of Lewis Cannon, b. Abt 1750 Pitt Co., d. Dec 1816 Craven Co. and Sarah Allen, b. Bef 1745 and d. Bef 1817. (Some believe Lewis Cannon's wife was Sarah Pugh. There were multiple Lewis Cannons in Pitt Co., so it gets very confusing.) Lewis Cannon's line goes back to Edward Cannon, I , b. Abt 1600 Yorkshire, England, d. Bef 1673, Lower Norfolk Co., VA. I frankly don't trust my data on this family; I think I'm missing a generation between Edward I and Lewis. Sarah Allen was the daughter of Shadrach Allen, b. Bef 1727, d. 1780 Craven Co., and Jemima Unknown, b. Bef 1729, d. Aft 1780. She was the sister of Shadrach Allen and Colonel John Allen whom George Washington visited on his "Southern Tour." Lewis Cannon & Sarah Allen lived near Pitchkettle in Pitt Co. Late in life he bought a lot in New Bern and moved into town where he died. I'll be happy to send you an ancestor file with my notes if you would like. Sammy Anson Pierce Hobe Sound, FL
MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTSWEB HOME OFFICE by Jake Gehring, RootsWeb Executive Producer Another week of work on the message boards has gone by. I just wanted to send out a quick note to report progress on bug fixes and enhancements as well as clarify my copyright statements which appeared in my last message. --- Users can now filter messages by category (queries, deeds, Bible records, obituaries, etc.) to see only messages of a particular type. --- Advanced searches may now be performed within a particular board and this option has been set as the default when the "Advanced Search" link is clicked from within a board. --- Combining the board hierarchies from GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com has progressed quite a bit since launch and is nearing completion. We realize this part of the launch has caused some problems, so thanks for bearing with us as we get one structure for all those millions of messages! Thanks Martha, I also need to make a trip to Jones County, and visit the Court House, hope to do it soon, was going to go today, but went to heritage place instead. For anyone who might be interested....I extracted all Simmons marriage info out of the Jones County marriage register, Vol 4. runs from about 1850-1930...... Be glad to do Simmons look-ups from that....... Also, I have copies of the FULL 1790, 1810, 1820 and 1830 census for Jones County, Hopefully will not be long until I can copy the other years also........ Tracy, Sounds like a great idea. Imput a little of mine on the database the other day and sent out a couple of emails to other descendants of Abraham and Martha (Patsy) Sutton Simmons. I have just about nothing on that line other than my direct line and a trip to the Jones Co Courthouse is on my list of things to do next trip. Have not checked to see what is in the Grady Simmons information. I have a hard copy of that but lost the database that Gloria had sent me for FTM when my pc crashed. Some of Abraham's land which is actually in Lenoir Co is still in the family. Hello everyone, As most of you know, I like many of you descend from Johann Simon (John Simmons SR) and Margaret Bussett of Craven County. While I have pretty much been able to document my own line back....I have noticed in my research that most of the compiled info on this family is through three of the sons, Emanuel, Daniel, and Abraham Bussett. My own line of Descent is through John, the eldest son of Johann and Margaret. Up until recently, I had only come across one or two people who could trace their ancestry back through John. However as of late, I have meet quite a few more descendants. My long term goal is to try and put a comprehensive database together of the descendants of Johann and Margaret, perhaps donate a printed copy to the local libraries, but short term and closest to my heart is the line of their son John. I would like to invite any and all Simmons Descendants who are interested in collaborating on this to please contact me....... Thanks so much to all who have already shared their information.
