His first son was named James Gray Ruff. The Gray name has filtered through 4 generations. My middle name is Gray and so is my father's. I was wondering if there might be a Ruff somewhere in your ancestry? Larry Gray Ruff in St. Charles, MO

I have sent the will of Simon Bright IV of Lenoir - partial will - and the Susan Harper Will (1853) of Pitt to Guy for posting. Susan was the widow of Alexander Harper III of Greene Co. Brenda, I am a little confused on Susan. Was she Susan Walston? Both were found in the Emily Loftin Collection in Morehead. Does anyone know which Francis Harper was married to Zilpha McCoy of Craven, I assume. Francis and Zilpha lived in Pitt but sold land in Craven in 1822 they inherited from Zilpha's father, William McCoy. Martha

These are the Collections listed for our area. Without question this is not all the Collections that pertain to Dobbs, Lenoir and Greene as Bill Murphy's Collection is not listed in the index. Going to take going through all the Collections in the Register to get a better idea. And, NO, I did not have time to even look at these so have no idea what is in them. Some of them might have more information on the ECU, Joyner Library, Manuscript Division URL. Pat has shared with us the Public Law as it relates to what a Courthouse etc can charge. You might want to run this off and take it the next courthouse trip although the actual amount is not stated. Please also keep in mind something Jack told me. He was in Hyde County and they tried to charge him 50 cents a copy and he showed them the law and they backed down to 10 cents. They also told him these fees was the only way they had of making a little money to pay for necessary overhead. Hyde is not exactly a teeming county and I understand what they were saying. Some of the courthouse staff members are real helpful and others have a bad attitude. Some of the nicest and most helpful staff members are in these little poor counties. Jones is a poor county and extremely helpful but personally I think $1.75 for two pages a bit much. Many thanks, Pat, for the information. Martha Martha, Here is the link for the North Carolina Public Records Law. It states the cost in the very first section http://www.ncpress.com/publicrecordslaw.html Pat Armor
Just sent Guy a small Collection called Murphey/Taylor Collection. Actually it is a very large Collection but mostly Craven and other counties with their records and I did not abstract them. Guilford Murphey - this Murphey family from Craven Stanton Taylor family of Greene and Lenoir Letters to and from the Windsor Dixon family of Greene which were not abstracted because they were really not that interesting. Did pull a few tidbits from them. SOme Hartsfield, Bruton information Martha
I was told by the director of the Carteret Co Historical Society that a law or directive or whatever was issued by the State about two years ago to all state institutions ie colleges, Courthouses etc that they could not charge more than it cost them to make copies for the public of documents in the public domain. He was going to send me a copy of this but he is going in a hundred directions at this time and we have not had any mail since Sat a week ago in this area. It cost them 2 cents a copy but they can charge 10 cents but not the 50 cents and up some charge. I was charged $1.75 at the Jones Co Courthouse for two pages - but they were much nicer and more helpful than many. Are any of you aware of this directive/law and have a copy of it? According to Jack, the Courthouses are aware of it but choose to ignore it unless they are called on the issue by a patron. Martha
Roger is going throught the General Assembly/Legislative Papers for Petitions and this information will be published in the PCFR. Took a quick look at what he had done and the only one I saw for Greene or Lenoir was Box 2 - 1808 - Silas Lassiter to son Nathan - on Wheat Swamp Roger is only doing an index although he might do the details of the Pitt ones he finds. This is a huge project and will be most helpful to many people. Martha
Billy, I am cc the Lenoir and Greene lists on this because of the Cowards. There were two Coward families in Greene - Edward out of Bertie, far as I know. THe other one was William Coward who married Ann Griffin of Craven Co. Ruth Fentress and I did a lot of work on the early family of Bertie years ago trying to hook up our William to that line and we couldn't. Allen has also done work on this family and Ray has published a book on the Griffin family out of ESVA. We don't have a good handle on William's birth, but he started having children by 1746 more or less. There is one entry in the Cross Indices from William Sr to William Jr ca 1750 to 1754 and our assumption is our William was the son of a William but that is not proven. THe William we can find in Bertie of the same age also had a wife Ann but they stayed in died in Bertie so there is just no fit. As I recall, Talbot Co is a burned County - naturally. This Richard Coward would not be the father of William of Dobbs unless Richard had another son not mentioned in his will but I wonder if there is a family connection especially since Charles Markland ended up in Dobbs. Thanks for the information - this gives us another place to look when we get back on the Cowards. Abstracted three small Collections this trip and just sent Guy the Shirley Kilpatrick Collection which is mostly Lenoir and will be posted on Lenoir Archives. For the first time, there were deeds for my own direct line with information I did not already know. Had always thought my Lemuel Hardy Mewborn only lived in Pitt, but he may have lived in Lenoir for awhile right next to our Moore family property. The other two Collections are the Murphrey and Loftin Collections. The Murphrey probably should be called Murphrey/Taylor Collection and is a rather large Collection but most of the deeds are Craven. I only abstracted the Lenoir ones since Craven has their records. It is the Guilford Murphrey and Stanton Taylor families. The Loftin Collection is at the Carteret Co Historical Association and is not available to the public at this point since they are in the process of moving into their new FANTASTIC building. There are at least 40 small boxes of information and I only went through 4 of them. Jack thinks this is all with old papers, but I think there are more since don't remember seeing the document Roger did for PCFR Quarterly. The only Loftin information I saw was the Preston Loftin Bible. There are Craven, Wayne and mostly Pitt documents - I only abstracted the Lenoir ones since Roger is working the Pitt deeds. There are hundreds of receipts and two wills - the Susan Harper Will of Pitt and a partial copied will of Simon Bright IV, I assume of Lenoir. Both of these will be posted. The vast majority of information is for the Pugh and Laughinghouse families of Swift Creek, Grifton area. Since the Pugh family is mine, found it of great interest, but nothing new as I recall. There is also one old Bryan deed which gives me personal circumstantial evidence - minor that it is - that Elizabeth Bryan Pugh, wife of Hugh Pugh Jr, was indeed the daughter of Lewis Bryan as I have thought. Be next week before the other two get typed up and sent to Guy. Roger also let me go through his notebook with his notes on Supreme Court Cases. Had done some of it several years ago but that was before I was interested in any local family. Now just to find time for extensive work at the NC Archives in the Supreme Court Cases. He said the NC Reports books he got them out of are the ones at ECU and there are many NC Reports by different companies so this is going to be a bit of a problem in trying to match them up, Many thanks Roger!!! If any of you are in Morehead after Veterans Day, please take the time to go by the Carteret Co Historical Society's new museum - it is indeed first class and I look forward to seeing it once it is open. My thanks to Jack Goodwin, the full time, unpaid, director who pulled these boxes out of storage for us to look through. My sister and I spent a day at the Duplin Co Courthouse - the quiet in that town is overwhelming. We also had the opportunity to meet Dr. Dallas Herring who sang the praises of Sloan. Need to have time to go back and get in his files. Got some Sutton and Rouse information - not sure how helpful it is going to be yet. Martha
