    2. Martha Marble
    3. Guy has posted the Emily Loftin Collection on all three counties. It is a huge Collection but understand most are financial records for the 20th century and Miss Loftin's personal information. We only abstracted the Lenoir documents as Wayne and Pitt have their deeds. The two wills - SImon Bright IV (partial) and Susan Harper of Pitt were posted separately. There is more of interest than I saw but the boxes were in storage. Maybe later and Roger and Brenda are also going through the Collection. THere is little in the way of Loftin information but the original Ila Loftin Bible is in the Collection. Guy put a note on the original posting of the location of the original. Our thanks to Jack Goodwin for his co-operation under difficult circumstances. Martha

    2. Martha Marble
    3. Betty, Welcome to the list. Your cousin Paula gave me your address but have not had time to contact you yet. Understand you are a published author in this passion of ours in Edgecombe Co. John Kilpatrick in his will ca 1760 mentioned a brother in law Aaron Grizzard and his daugher Lucy. I assume there was not but one Grizzard in the area but information on this family is scarce. I have a fairly extensive database on the Kilpatrick family but little on the female lines including the Grizzard family. Would love to have at least a couple of generations. Have you been able to link up to Aaron Grizzard? One of the surnames in the John Kilpatrick Will, I have been able to determine were also from Goochland/Henrico Co, Va but not the Grizzard family. Ima Mewborn did a lot of work on the Mooring family - that information may be at Lenoir Co Community College. 2. Martha Marble
    3. Sorry - this lost the nice format that Pat used. Next time some of you go to a Courthouse to copy, how about taking these emails from Pat with you and see what kind of reaction you get. If they won't lower their costs then think it might be time for us to do a little protesting to the AG. For those of you who don't know - Easley is now the Gov of NC but I assume the Sunshine Office is still in existence. Stephen did protest, but received no reply. Prices weren't lowered either. This is from the office of Mike Easley http://www.jus.state.nc.us/cr/sunshine.htm Pat Armor Public Records: Questions & Answers 1. What is the public policy regarding public records? The North Carolina General Assembly has declared as a matter of public policy that the public records and public information compiled by agencies of North Carolina government or its subdivisions are the property of the people. N.C.G.S. § 132-1(b) 2. What are public records? Public records are documentary materials that are either made or received by government agencies in North Carolina in carrying on public business. Public records include documents, papers, letters, maps, books, photographs, films, sound recordings, magnetic or other tapes, electronic data-processing records, artifacts or other documentary material, regardless of physical form or characteristic. N.C.G.S. § 132-1 3. Who may inspect or get copies of public records? Any person may inspect and get copies of public records. N.C.G.S. § 132-6 4. To whom should a request for public records be directed? The Public Records Law does not describe any specific procedure that a person must follow in requesting to inspect public records. Normally, a request to any employee in a government office is sufficient to get access to records in that office. However, it is the custodian of public records who is specifically required to allow those records to be inspected. The public official in charge of an office is designated to be the custodian of records for that office. N.C.G..S. § 132-2 5. When are public records available for inspection or copying? The Public Records Law says that inspection and examination of records should be allowed at "reasonable times" and under the reasonable supervision of the agency. "Reasonable times" is generally understood to mean during regular business hours. N.C.G.S. § 132-6 6. May citizens request copies of public records in any media available? If an agency has the capability to provide copies of public records in different kinds of media (for example, in print or on computer disc), people requesting copies may choose to get copies in any and all the media available. People requesting copies of computer databases may be required to make their requests in writing. N.C.G.S. § 132-6.2(c) 7. May an agency charge fees for public records? Government agencies may not charge fees for inspecting public records. Fees for certifying copies of public records are provided by law. However, unless otherwise provided by law, no public agency shall charge a fee for an uncertified copy of a public record that exceeds the actual cost to the public agency of making the copy. N.C.G.S. § 132-6.2(b) Thanks, Pat www.parmor.com

    3. There has been a change in the price (probably not a good decision) and address for the Lenoir County Heritage Book (history of families including Greene families and of the county) and Plain and Fancy (history of old buildings in Lenoir). There will be additional information and a request for sugggestions on how to move these books as soon as Mary Mac has time to deal with this new job. I was told by several different people that the Historical Society was almost out of the reprint of the Heritage Books. Given they have 600 copies still to sell, obviously that information was incorrect. They want our help moving them. No chance of doing Vol 2 until Vol 1 is sold. Some of you have had a problem receiving your books after your check was cashed - with Mary Mac at the helm, there will be no further problem. The new price and address for ordering: Information on the Heritage Book The Heritage of Lenoir County $35.00 / shipping $3.00 Coastal Plain and Fancy $55.00 / shipping $4.00 Contact Mary Mac K. All of Ima's information is now on a database and there is not a Ruff among them connected to the Gray family. THe Gray family of Greene probably came out of Bertie Co and there was probably more than one line that moved to Old Dobbs because there appears to be a connected line in Lenoir without the Bibles that exist in Greene. No doubt some lines are missing in Greene, but Ima had most of them. There are several members of the Greene ROOTS list researching the Spivey, Gray, and Ruff families. You should join the list if not already a member. A lot of the Spivey information that has been bounced around on the list is earlier. Martha
