We enjoyed our time spent with the relatives. They are all gone back to Florida now so it has been very quiet around here after having a house full. I was off work today so decided to go over to the courthouse in Snow Hill to see if I could find anything for you on your Bakers in Greene Co. As I am sure you are aware, there are very, very few surviving records prior to the 1876 fire. Therefore, while you will surely be disappointed I know that you probably won't be too surprised to learn that I was not able to find much info for you. I tried to be as thorough as possible in the couple hours I had to spend there. I am of course not as familiar with your names as you are so it might be possible that I missed some clues. It would probably be a good idea for me to go back and check again once you have time to look over my findings and formulate new questions for me. Take a look at what little bit I DID find and see what you think. Here goes: There are no Baker wills (surviving wills anyway) from the 1800's. There appear to be no surviving deeds involving James Baker Sr. and his wife Priscilla. (There are a very few deeds dated prior to 1876 that people resubmitted after the fire but none for James or Priscilla.) There are no surviving deeds for James H. and JosiAnn Baker. I could not find JosiAnn Hobbs in any deeds. Very few Hobbs deeds at all. Maybe about 10 grantors and as many grantees. The following is what I did find- There was one thick index book that contained accounts, inventories, administrations, etc all in one book. There WAS a listing for Priscilla Baker under Record of Accounts . Accounts Book # 13 page 125 date 1872. The administrator listed for her was W.A. Darden. This at least tells us that she must have died about 1872. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate Account Book # 13. When I inquired as to its whereabouts I was told that it had been sent to the NC State Archives in Raleigh. There WAS a listing in the same index for James Baker, Record of Accounts Book # 13 page 184 date 1872. Administrator listed as W.A. Darden Jr. Again the Accounts Book # 13 has apparently been sent to Raleigh. At least that is what I was told. The most promising things I found were the marriage records. Here goes: J.D. McKeel applied for a marriage license on Oct. 19,1878 for the marriage of Hines Baker age 21 of Greene Co.(son of Hines and JosiAnn Baker-parents both dead) to Milley Grizzard age 19 of Greene Co. (daughter of Allen Grizzard and Elizabeth Grizzard- Allen was already dead and Elizabeth was alive). The marriage occurred the following day on Oct. 20, 1878 in Speight's Bridge Township. Marriage performed by W.A. Darden, JP. Witnesses were: R.C.D. Beaman, William May, and J.B. Speight. This may not be important but just wanted to mention that there was a Bryant Baker who had several sons to get married during the 1870's. Just wondered if Bryant and his sons might be related to your folks. Bryant's sons were Gaston, James P., and Abram Baker. I didn't take notes but can later if necessary. Also wanted to mention the following marriage record but it might not be important. Henry Baker 22yo of Wilson Co. son of Elijah and Mariah Baker (both dead) to Penny Cobb 26yo daughter of Wm and Gatsey Cobb( Wm is dead, Gatsey alive). The marriage occured on March 13, 1881 in Speight's Bridge Township at the home of Gatsey Cobb. Marriage performed by James Moore a Free Will Baptist minister. Witnesses were-Jonas Williams, Benj. Edwards, and Thom. H. Williams. Note- this Henry Baker may not be connected at all but it was interesting to me because William and Gatsey Cobb are my third great grandparents. Note- I found the marriage records last. It was about closing time then. I didn't have time to go back and check anything else. The point is this. I believe I remember seeing deeds with the name Milley Baker. When I saw that I didn't know it might be important. After learning that Hines Baker married Milley Grizzard I would have liked to go back and look for the deeds in the name of Milley Baker. I'm afraid this was about all I was able to find. As I said above, there may be a couple more relevant deeds. I will wait to see if you have more questions, further thoughts. Then maybe I can go back and take another look sometime soon. One further thing I will mention which may or may not be significant. Notice that WA Darden was the administrator of James and Priscilla Baker. Notice that WA Darden performed the marriage of Hines Baker and Milley Grizzard. In light of that, let me tell you that I did find one pre-fire deed that had been resubmitted after the fire. It was about a William Darden who was dec'd and left a minor in the guardianship of Jonas Williams. The minor's name was Priscilla Darden. Date was 1802. I hope this is helpful Paula and I will be waiting to hear from you. They both died about 1872. If anyone knows who Priscilla Darden may have been married to the first time, let us know via the group so we can both see it, please:) Priscilla born 1815 could have been married to a man with a name beginning with an A. She lists that as one of her initials in a census. Priscilla Darden's father is listed in the LDS site as Abraham Darden and Sarah Westbrook. Does anyone have a list of their siblings? You do not mention where he died, who he married, children, whether this is your direct ancestor, etc. Have you looked for a death certificate which normally lists the parents?

    3. As most of you have already found out, there is another virus going around - seems to be a mutant of the badtrans and my McAfee is NOT picking it up. I know where some of mine originated from - she is not on our lists - but it is coming from other places. In addition, it is putting a _ in front of the address of the sender so you can't reply to warn them. Like Susan, I eliminated all but a few of my bookmarks and put them in a word file - it is time consuming when I want to send someone an email but it keeps a virus from spreading. In addition, someone suggested putting as the first bookmark !0000 - this is suppose to stop an attachment going out to everyone on your booksmarks as your email won't send it and therefore stops all of them. Don't know if it works and hope don't have to find out, but it certainly can't hurt. PLEASE remember, people don't usually send you a virus by design - they don't know they have one. Advise them to clean up their pc but do it nicely and watch opening any attachments. Martha

I had a reference that James W Cobb had moved from Greene to Pitt. Did he move to Craven, also. Did you come to the meeting this Oct. We may have talked together. Do you have Kinchens Civil War record? Where did the idea that he may have fought in the Mexican War come from? The Greene 1850 census has: 283 James B Cobb 23 284 William G Cobb 21 286 Penny Brand 23 Kinchen m. Penny Brand about 1851 It may be that there is kinship between James, William and Kinchen. Ages suggest brothers. Need to find some estate records in Edgecombe Co that will shed light on it. James B Cobb is not listed on the 1860 Greene, but William G Cobb is. It might be a good idea to find James B Cobb. 1850 Edgecombe Co census shows: Henry Owens 51 Sally 42 Peter 18 Jane 14 Amanda 13 W H 9 Ann 7 Jno. R 5 Geo. W 3 Kinchen Cobb 21 Laborer N C S

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GUB.2ACE/479.3.2.1 Message Board Post: Allen, Thanks for answering my query. Burial Locations: My father and mother, Lawrence A. Cobb Sr. and Mary Lillian Parkerson Cobb - buried Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, N.C. Lawrence Sr. is the son of: James (Jim) W. Cobb - buried Spring Garden Church, Craven County. wife Martha Mattilin Jones Cobb - buried Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, N.C. Son of Kinchen Zadoc Cobb and Penny Brand Cobb - Burial site is unknown. It is believed that Kinchen and Penny are buried in Greene County just outside Farmville where he supposedly owned land and where several of his children are buried. I spent some time looking for his grave when I was there in October. There are many small family grave sites in the area, just have to find the right one. Kinchen Cobb and Penny Brand Cobb are my GGrandparents It is possible that Kinchen does not appear in the 1850 census because he had not returned to the Greene/Pitt county area following his release from the military following the Mexican War (1846-1848). I have most of the family documented from Kinchen Cobb to the present. I have been looking for proof of Kinchen Cobb's father for some time without luck. I believe he is connected to Kinchen Cobb son of David Cobb and brother of Howell Cobb. Any information in this area will be greatly appreciated. I live in Texas and get to N.C. only once a year and that is during the Pitt County Family Researchers reunion which happens on the same week end that we have our Corbitt family reunion (my mothers side) Again, thanks for your help Larry Cobb Greenville, Texas
