We had not planned on running this until Patty had a chance to notify the lists but it needs an explanation as to the delays. For personal reasons, Patty can no longer continue as our webmaster. She has done a first class job on developing this site and keeping up with it. Most of you have no clue to the time it takes to stay on top of a site that has grown as fast as this one. It leaves little time for anything else including research and most important, family matters. Patty is going to continue with the graphics and she will continue to have imput. There are not enough words to say how much we all appreciate her time and efforts on our behalf. THANK YOU, PATTY. Guy Potts has agreed to take over as the main webmaster but he needs some time to clear up some other projects he is working on and to learn a different system. I am also trying to find someone with a lot of patience to teach me how to do a website so I can help out. And Tracy has offered to help but she has so much already, would only use her in a pinch. Please just sit on everything for the time being. Patty had started cleaning up the site this summer but it needs to be refined more. We have come close to being a "victim of our success" and we need to sit down and take a look at where we want to go with the site. Again, our heartfelt thanks to Patty and also to Guy for keeping it going. Martha
Contains a number of interesting names from Pitt, Greene, Lenoir, and Wayne. I want to read something into the reason some of these names are on this list. Could they all have been loyal to the Union throughout the war? I wonder if any of these petitioners were former slaveholders. Is there any significance to the area where some of the petitioners lived and the places where skirmishes or battles took place in the region? Very few from Pitt County! Could some of the petitioners have taken advantage of this Act of Congress in order to try to be compensated for property which was confiscated by the Union during the War? I see some names I recognize as likely Quakers, i.e. Cox. Are there others? I have seen this before in the library, but for those who do not live in the area, and who descend from one or more of the Swiss/Palatine families, it is very interesting, just found it online tonight. Tracy, Neat job!!!. The pictures are great - they don't show the peeling paint and plaster that I saw in Oct. I didn't even know the upstairs was open to the public - everytime I have been in it, the upstairs was closed off. Certainly did not know about the doll collection. Just discovered the other day the DAR has beautiful doll clothes from the 1700's for purchase. Harmony Hall is a pretty house but sorely in need of a lot of repairs. The money from the sale of the two books go directly towards these repairs. Many thanks for this contribution. Linda, First, welcome to the list - suspect you are on the Lenoir List. A bunch of us have tried to redo the Rouse line - without a lot of success. A few things have come out - some with proof and some just circumstantial. The holes in this family are numerous. The children of John and Winifred are a little shakey. I suspect the last 5 sons you have listed are probably correct although there is nothing to prove it. When Winifred died, her obit in the Recorder stated she had 5 living sons and the daughter SMithy. Sure wish they had named them. Bennett is a proven son of Noah Rouse I so he is not a son of John and Winnifred. Jonathan - that is my line. There is minor circumstantial to indicate he was the son of Simon I but it is certainly not proven. Not sure I have ever seen that Alexander SMith's wife was a Sutton. Have you seen anything to document that information? If true, that would indicate she was the daughter of John Sutton. Many thanks for this information - some it I did not have. Martha Hi, I'm new to the page, but I do have a little, for what its worth, on the Rouse line that has come from the Lenoir Co. page and other sources through the past few years. The Rouse line comes in my Becton line. You will have to verify it through census etc., but most of it I believe is correct. It is a place to start. Trish, you asked where the death date came from - you show it but where did you get it from? I don't have one for him. I do have a Birthdate from the Bible which is posted - I think - on Lenoir. Can't get Netscape to work today. THere is a copy of the book at Heritage Place and would love to read it sometime. Best I can tell his parents were John and Winifred, but have not seen any proof for any of the sons of John and Winifred. Do you have the obit on Winifred from the Recorder? Ran it to the LEnoir list but might not have run it to Greene.
