Good afternoon! I have been on my PC since 5:30am this morning trying to get the above worm stopped from coming into my PC. I'm only sending this note after being assured that I will not be sending it to anyone else. This is brand new and some of you may have already heard about it or have already had it on your PC. It started this weekend. I was one of the unfortunate ones to have gotten it before Norton, evidently, found out about it, being so new. I apologize, but I'm not PC literate, so I can't go into any kind of a technical explanation about what to do to get rid of it or anything like that. I can only stress that if you haven't gotten it, ASAP go onto the internet and find out about this worm, in order to protect yourself from getting it. I talked to a couple of techs and they said that if you have a firewall, chances are 99% that you won't get it. It has something to do with it comes in on an open port and as long as that port is closed it can't come thru. I found the folder that it established in my computer, but it won't allow me to delete it. Saturday, my computer, a couple of times, restarted itself after giving me a 60 second notice. Sunday, it did the same thing. This morning, especially when I would connect to the internet, I would only be in for about 1-2 mins. and it would give me the message and reboot, it just kept doing this and finally I got a Virus Notice. Did a complete PC virus scan and one file came up: W32.blast.worm - asked if I wanted it quarantined - Yes - then asked if I wanted it repaired - Yes, but it said it could be repaired, did I want it deleted? - Yes, then it said it couldn't delete it. Have you ever tried to search on the internet for support and your PC keeps rebooting? I would suggest going into some of these sites for your own protection: www.microsoft.com www.symantec.net Or if you have Internet Explorer, go into that and bring up Microsoft Windows Updates and it has it in there. Hopefully, this note has been in time to keep you all from having this worm. Since closing the port, I haven't had any reoccurrence of the note or rebooting and my virus scan checks out. Diane, I feel for you. I've heard some horror stories on some of these viruses that get started. Luckily, I regularly go to Windows Update for my computer and I update my Norton AntiVirus Program daily and I haven't gotten one of those viruses. It did detect, however, several times Monday Night and Tuesday several "Malicious Scripts" which tried to get into my computer, and it blocked them before they could get in. According to the news yesterday, Microsoft had known about this vulnerability for some time and had put in a "patch" for it a couple of months ago at their Update site, so that must be one of the things I downloaded during one of my Update sessions there. I would suggest that people regularly keep both their Windows and AntiVirus Programs up to date to keep these new viruses from spreading and to protect themselves. I'm just hoping these hackers don't think of some way in the future to thwart even those efforts.
