I would like some help in trying to distinguish which Williams may have been the husband of Sarah Rose, who was married before 1768. If you know of any of these persons mentioned in these abstracts, please e-mail me. Thanks. E.W.Wallace Descendant of William Rose through his son Frederick Rose, who went to Georgia after the Revolution.. SARAH ROSE. (Living and married in 1768). Is Sarah Rose, daughter of William Rose of Tar River area, the wife of Stephen Williams OR of John Williams of early Granville Co., NC? (Her father's abstracted will is at the end of this message) This Williams family is NOT to be confused with the more prominent Williams family of the area around Nutbush Creek [now Kerr Lake] of northern Granville Co. who interestingly enough had a Charles Williams also. Sarah Williams was named in the will of her father, William Rose of Granville Co., written early 1768. Based on tentative research, we believe her spouse may have been Stephen Williams of Tar River. If Stephen was her spouse, then his father was William Williams of the Tar River area, whose will was proved Feb 1765, Granville co., NC. Unrecorded wills, 1746-27 "66 - Apr 3, 1763 - proved Feb 1765- William Williams wills to son Charles Williams 250 acres of land on south side of Tarr river, also my part of the wagon and two horses belonging to the wagon, a feather bed and furniture; to son Stephen Williams, plantation whereon I now live containing 143 acres on north side of Tarr river and a feather bed and furniture, a horse and my saddle; to daughter Lucy Pitman, wife of Samuell Pitman, 5 shillings; my wife Elizabeth to have use of plantation and dwelling house whereon I now live for as long as she is my widow or for life and at her death, the land go to the aforesaid Stephen Williams; the movable property divided between Charles and Stephen Williams. Exrs: my son Charles Williams and friend Francis Fowler. Wts: John Williams, John Morris. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1808 [Rocky Mount, NC: Joseph W. Watson, 1973], p. 27) Or, was Sarah's spouse John Williams? (p. 21 of Gwynn's COURT MINUTES OF GRANVILLE CO.) This is the abstracted will of William Rose of Knap or Nap of Reeds area of Granville Co., NC: Granville Co. NC unrecorded will-page 54. [Written] Dec 1, 1768 - proved Jan. court 1769- William Rose wills to son Frederick Rose 300 acres on Reeds creek, 6 head of cattle, and 3 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to my son William Rose, my lower tract on Nap of Reeds creek known as "Elwoods," 6 cattle, 4 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to son Howel Rose, all land whereon I now live after his mother's death, she to live and use it for her lifetime; to daughter Sarah Williams, 10 pds; to daughter Elizabeth Rose, 40 pds. when she is 21 years old or married; to daughter Winneyfred Rose, a negro woman, 5 cattle now at Robert Sorriels when she is 21 years old or married; to my wife Amy Rose, 2 negroes, household furniture, livestock, for her lifetime and, at her death, to be sold and money to my son Howel Rose, with exception of setting up Frederick and William with enough of pewter, tools, etc., etc. Exrs: wife Ame Rose, brother-in-law James Langston. Wts: James Langston, James Willis, Jean Langston. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1808 [Rocky Mount, NC: Joseph W. Watson, 1973], p. 22) As noted, a number of these heirs were not yet 21 years of age, including Frederick. The widow was the former Amy Langston, and she married twice subsequent to Rose's death. (These Roses were associated with Merritt, Langston, and others of that general area of colonial Granville Co., NC.)
