    3. Daniela, I have a lot of deed and will books for early Edgecombe Co., as well as "History and Genealogies of Old Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1800", by Thomas McAdory Owen and there is no mention of a Providence Carter. I did find one reference to Thomas Bivens in the Granville book though as follows: Orphans in the County, Pg. 191 - #33. March 9, 1758. Thomas BEVIN, ag'd 13 Jany 1, 1758, bound to Jas. DOWNEY to learn to be "planter" & to be given 1 yrs schooling. I looked for other entries in the book with James DOWNEY, and only found 2 other listings. One was: Abstracts of Wills -Pg. 38,39 - GEORGE BRASFIELD. Will, dat. Jun 21, 1771, prob. ___Ct. 1771. To wife Elizabeth his whole est., real and personal during her widowhood, on her complying with the particulars hereafter named; and (2) to eldest daut. Abigail MALONE, second daut. Elizabeth KNOTT, third daut. Fanny BOND, Caleb BRASFIELD, Nancy BRASFIELD, Judith BRASFIELD, George BRASFIELD, Milley BRASFIELD, and Pattey BRASFIELD, an equal part of his negroes and his personal est. at and not before wifes' decease unless his exs. are of opinion a div. can be made without injury to the young children. Exs: wife, Messrs. LEWIS & LEWIS, and James DOWNEY. Wit: Sam'l HOPKINS, James DOWNEY, Robert MALONE. Id. p. 218., Inv . ret. to Feby. Ct. 1772; among other items: "A number of Books", and 5 negroes. Id. P.222. Assessors - Pg. 165 - June 22, 1782. James DOWNEY, Robert HARRIS, John PEACE Jr., John WILLIAMS, Daniel Thomas OWEN, & Jonathan KNIGHT added to the list above for present year.
