To do it yourself research for Revolutionary War pension files: If you are near a large genealogical library or a University library, first try to determine whether they have a set of books edited by Virgil D. White. The name of the set of books is something like this: Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pensions..... There are four hefty volumes, with the last volume being the all-name index to the first three volumes. This essentially is an index to all of the names occuring in the films held by the National Archives on the subject listed. White will not give you the film number but his abstracts (listed alphabetically by surname) will give you some good genealogical information about the service man, his widow if applicable, his heirs if applicable, and goodness knows what else. Furthermore, it will give you the number of the pension or the widow's pension. (And White has also indexed other pension claims from other wars--he is important to genealogists.) Also, with luck, a University library near you (or some such LARGE library) may have the microfilms of the actual pension papers. Click around on some online catalogs of libraries near you. I believe the National Archives number for the pension records (Rev War) are numbered M-804. There are close to 3,000 reels of film, so most libraries do not have these films. The films are available on loan through your local FHCenter (if there is one near you) from Salt Lake City. Otherwise, you have to order the copies of the film from Washington DC--for about $37 (the last time I looked). In order to order the film from Salt Lake City, however, you have to know the number of the Salt Lake film. And that is a handicap. By clicking around the www.familysearch.org and searching the catalog, I finally stumbled upon where these films are cataloged. Veteran's Administration Go down the long list of topics until you find Revolutionary War ..... Click on that, and then you will find the films are listed alphabetically by surname. You want the film for your specific person, so don't do this search in a hurry! Revolutionary war pension and bounty-land-warrant application files Although the topi states there are bounty-land-warrant applications, when I ordered a hefty file from the National Archives (before the price rose so high), the bounty-land-warrant application was NOT included. I believe you have to request that separately. Live and learn!!! E.W.Wallace
