I should have said that Ann Woodlief's website contains exerts from Luther C. Davis, Jr's Path of the Parrishes. Following is the website's URL: http://www.geocities.com/awoodlief/parrishhist.htm I have corresponded with Ann Woodlief and informed her of the mistake in the book on David Parrish in Granville Co NC. I lost the thread of who originally sent the request for information about Rueben Searcy, hence, I am posting to the list. I descend from the HENDERSON family and have a SUSAN SEARCY who married NATHANIEL HENDERSON 6 Aug 1818 in Rockingham NC . The source for this info was the NC Marriages 1741-1868 Database at Ancestry.com. Thecomplete data from this source reads: Marriage Data taken from Ancestry.com NC Marriages 1741-1868 Database: Bride: Susan Searcy Groom: Nathaniel Henderson Bond Date: 06 Aug 1818 County: Rockingham Record #: 01 108 Bondsman: Thomas Searcy ( Possibly the half-brother of SUSAN?) Bond #: 000119988 The source for SUSAN as the wife of NATHANIEL was the Dictionary of N.Carolina Biography V.3; ed. Wm Powell;publisher: Univ NC 1988, pgs 107-109. I don't know if this is the daughter of Rueben Searcy mentioned as SUSAN (1780-1819) , by his 2nd wife, SUSANNAH JETT, or not. I thought I'd send on the information, in case anyone found it helpful. Nancy
This is my first post on this website. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kevin Dukes. I am a descendant of William Duke Sr.(1701-1773) of Granville/Warren Co. NC. I am descended from his son Samuel Duke Sr.(1722-1795) and grandson Samuel Dukes Jr. (1745-1821) who migrated to Muhlenberg Co.KY in 1803. I have been researching this family for 2 years, and I am writing a book based on this research. There seems to be quite a bit of controversy regarding the parentage of this William Duke who was from Virginia, probably on the South side of the James River, or on the North side of James River if you believe the conclusions of Evelyn Duke Brandenberger who wrote "The Duke Family." William is credited as being the father of most, if not all, of the Duke family descendants in Warren/Franklin Co. NC after he settled there about 1744. The most well known son of this William Duke was his eldest son William Duke (1721-1793) who married Mary Green about 1742 in Brunswick Co. VA. This family is well documented in Granville/Warren Co. history. There are documents posted on the Warren and Granville Co. Genforum and rootsweb sites titled the "Duke Family Papers" by Ginger Beattie-Christmas which were supposedly handed down through several generations of the family. This document states that William Duke of Granville/Warren Co. who was married to Mary Green was born in Dovershire, England in 1709, was a younger son of Raleigh Duke, and was raised by Col. William Byrd after his parents died. This is obviously a controversial document because it conflicts with every Duke family researcher, and is also in conflict with family documentation from the NC Archives. William Duke Jr. who married Mary Green, is documented along with his father, William Sr. and brothers Samuel and Joseph as members of the Granville Co.! Militia in 1754. They are also documented in the Granville Co. Taxables 1749-1764, and William Jr. and his son Green Duke are in the 1790 Warren Co.Census. William Jr. was obviously a wealthy man, listed with 2200 acres and 53 slaves. His son Green had several hundred acres and 45 slaves. I am looking for comments or suggestions from other Duke family researchers regarding this family's origins. Recent research by Lynn Teague, whom I consider the best of the Duke family researchers, conflicts with many conclusions drawn by Evelyn Duke Brandenberger, who argued that William Duke Sr. was the son of the James Duke and Mary Byrd of the noble Byrd family of Virginia. sincerely, kevin dukes
This is my initial GRANVI-L posting and I am also interested in <David> PARRISHes of Granville Co. NC. I don't have hard birth, death, or marriage dates for my David PARRISH but have several details about my David PARRISH. Plus, I have been told the David PARRISH of Granville Co. is my David by some, and others tell me the Granville Co. David PARRISH is not mine. So I am at a loss, and it does not help that the Wisconsin Historical Society is closed for a month to reorganize the stacks meaning I can't really go look for evidence myself at the moment. I am not typically so helpless but sure could use a helping hand. I have located two, and perhaps 3, David PARRISHes one of which almost has to be mine, Humphrey PARRISH Sr who dies 1743. m. Mary unknown had a son David b. 1725. I know nothing further of this David at this time though he seems a trifle old to be my David PARRISH. A Goochland Co. Va family possibly out of Anne Arundel Maryland//St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co. Va. vicinity Humphrey PARRISH Jr. 1705-1773 m. Mary WALKER have a son David PARRISH b. 1737 m. Judith HOLLAND. This David does have a daughter Sally. A person I know to be on this list denies this is my David & Sally (I do not want to name anybody to avoid unintentionally upsetting them). But s/he stated the David PARRISH married to Judith HOLLAND lived all his life in Goochland Co., and then talked of Granville Co., which confused me so I must have misunderstood something. Plus I located a Lunenburg Co. Deed in Deed Book 9 dated 10 March 1763 referring to a Peter PARRISH & wife Lucy & a David PARRISH & wife Mary. I posted on the Lunenburg Co. list and the PARRISH list and not one soul responded to my inquiry who this David PARRISH was. It may be he is the David b. 1725. I am not sure. I cannot figure out this Peter PARRISH either which doesn't help. Neither of the Humphrey's seems to have a son Peter. What I know of my David PARRISH is the following: 1. 18 March 1779 he witness Joseph GILL stating that John CHILDRESS had paid all debts due. Halifax Co. Deed Book 11. 2. 14 Oct 1777 he witnessed William WADE selling Abraham TALLEY land adjoining John GRIFFIN <Aaron's Creek formerly called Tewahominy Creek>. Halifax Deed Book 11. 3. 7 June 1780 witness Moses FOUNTAINE selling to Joseph McCARTY land on Hico Creek ((my WALLs lived on Hico)) Halifax Deed Book 12. 4. 2 Oct 1777 witnessed Obidiah HOOPER selling to Reuben JONES land on PINSON's Br which is the Hico//Aaron's Creek vicinity. Other witnesses were John GRIFFIN and Richard ARRINGTON. Reuben JONES & Richard ARRINGTON are Uncles to my Sally PARRISH's husband John Jr. GRIFFIN. Halifax Deed Book 14. 5. 11 Aug 1792 John Vaughan of Mecklenburg to David PARRISH of Halifax land on Aaron's Cr. Reuben JONES among the witnesses. Halifax Deed Book 15. 6. 29 Oct 1788 Stephen JONES & Elizabeth TREVILLION <sic> marry. Sur: John GRIFFIN Wit: David PARRISH. Marriage performed by Rev. Henry LESTER 7. 29 Oct 1788 Sally PARRISH daughter of David PARRISH marries John GRIFFIN Jr. Sur: David PARRISH. Marriage performed by Rev. Henry LESTER meaning this was likely a double marriage. Sally PARRISH d/o David PARRISH & unknown <maybe Judith HOLLAND, maybe Mary unknown> b. ??? say 1755-1772 range d. bef. 27 Nov 1809 m. 29 Oct 1788 Halifax Co. Va to John GRIFFIN Jr. s/o John GRIFFIN Sr. & Sarah PARRISH <yes both Johns married PARRISH ladies and I know less about Sarah than I do about David & daughter Sally> Children: Lucy GRIFFIN b. ca 1790 m. Byrd WALL <my g-g-g-grandparents removed to Stokes/Forsyth Co. after marrying in Halifax in 1809> Hampton GRIFFIN b. 27 Mar 1792 m. Jane EZELL <removed to Gibson Co. Tenn> Richard GRIFFIN b. ca 1802 m. Margaret PINSON <removed to Stokes//Forsyth Co. NC > other children probable but not yet located. My David PARRISH died after 11 Aug 1792 the last hard date I have located that connects to him. My WALLs & GRIFFINs lived Halifax Co. just above the Virginia - North Carolina state line abutting Granville Co. So it is very easy to believe they crossed the state line. I cannot locate my David PARRISH's death date in Halifax Co. Virginia. I have seen postings indicating the Granville Co. David PARRISH had a daughter Sally b. ca 1772. A Granvi-L listmember I have been in contact with denies the Granville Co. David PARRISH (m. Judith HOLLAND) is mine. Facing denials from every direction someone has to be wrong about this PARRISH line. The Lickinghole Creek, Goochland Co. Va. PARRISH line David PARRISH m. Judith HOLLAND is part of were connected to BATES & FLEMINGs and WALKERS and the leading candidate for parents of Byrd WALL are John WALL & Ursula BATES of Halifax Co. Va. John WALL's younger brother was Charles Fleming WALL m. Elizabeth BATES. Elizabeth & Ursula BATES are sisters. <<the recently started WALL surname DNA study will hopefully prove the link shortly>> So I am seeing all the right families and am receiving universal denials that my David PARRISH connects to any DAVID PARRISH I can locate anywhere near Halifax Co. Plus no one anywhere includes the Halifax Co. David PARRISH information in any line or tree. I think the truth lies in either Granville Co. NC or Goochland Co. Va. And the Wis His Soc is closed to me for the for seeable future That is why I am appealing for help regarding ANY David PARRISH living between 1725-1825. Granville Co. NC or Halifax - Lunenburg - Goochland Co. Virginia. I am too stubborn to give up this easily :) an extremely frustrated, james wall
I am not the person to question concerning the Parish family of Granville Co., NC. This is not one of my lines, but as I read the deeds, wills, etc. of colonial Granville Co., NC, I stumble upon the surname Parish. I suggest you post a well-framed question concerning your Parishes to the Granville Co. rootsweb. Be sure to give some DATES, which many people leave out. If you don't give a time frame, no one is likely to help you. If you are near an LDS family history center, you might be interested in reading some of the filmed records of all the NC counties in which you are interested. The Fam Hist Library catalog is on the lower right part of this URL <A HREF="www.familysearch.org">www.familysearch.org</A> You cannot borrow the books but you can order the films to your nearby LDS center. Call them up and ask when they are open. E.W.Wallace
I am a descendant of David Parrish who died in Granville Co NC in 1792. He and his family moved there abt 1752 from Goochland Co VA. He also owned land in Chatham Co NC. The person who posted the query abt Granville Co NC to Wake and Johnston Co NC did not state what years he/she was referring to or the possible names. Bettye
I also descend from these Parrishes: John Parrish, son John Parrish, son Humphrey Parrish, son John Parrish, son Brissie Parrish, son Justice Parrish Sr., 2n marriage - son David Parrish, son Albert Parrish, dau Frances B. Parrish, dau. Gertrude M. Holt, son Gilmer Harrison Pollard Sr. and me Diane Jean Pollard. Please get in touch with me, if you are interested in exchanging info. Diane Pollard Keiser
Good morning! I'm a direct line descendant of these Parrishes. I have 2 Peter Parrish's in my database. No info on their wife or children. Peter Parrish - s/o Justice Parrish Sr. b. abt 1745 Granville, NC; d. 1808 and 1st wife ??? Peter Parrish - s/o Simon Peter Parrish b. 1798 , d. abt 1850 and Edith Stevenson b. abt 1799 - gs/o Justice Parrish Sr. b. abt 1745 Granville, NC; d. 1808 and 2nd wife, Avysella/Averyella Flewellen b. abt 1750, d. abt 1835 I know that neither of these Peter's fit your timeframe of the Peter you are inquiring about. But thought I would let you know that this family does have the name Peter in it. As far as David Parrish goes, I have a number of them in my database. David Parrish - s/o Humphrey Parrish b. abt 1705, d. abt 1773 and Mary Walker). This David could have been born during your timeframe of 1725, since I do have his brother Joel being b. abt 1737. David Parrish b. abt 1725 - s/o Humphrey Parrish b. abt 1680, d. abt 1743 and Mary ???. From what I have gathered so far, all these Parrishes descend from Parrish's from or near Goochland Co, VA. When I visited the Johnston Co Heritage Center in Smithfield, Johnston Co, NC, there was a book "Path of the Parrishes," by Luther C. Davis, Jr., Silver Springs, MD 1988, that has quite alot of info on all these Parrishes. I'm not saying that this particular author's info is totally correct in his research, but it may have some answers for you. I xeroxed alot or all of it when I was there. I need to find my copy. When I do, I will get in touch with you. I know that thru this book, I found a line of these Parrishes came to Balto Co, MD and ironically enough they (very distantly) connect with my research that I have been doing on my mother's family surname of Wheeler. I really kind of liked the fact of coming full circle with a faint connection between my mother and father's families. No one's research is without mistakes. We should always be open-minded to that fact. My gggrandmother (my mother's side) was a brick wall for me. I read some of the top writer's of books on my Wheeler family and they all either had her surname as Cooper or that she had married a Leonard. I kept at that brick wall and you know what - without a doubt they are incorrect in their information. Her surname was Leonard (variation on spelling) and her mother's surname was Cooper. I only have found 3 pieces of documents to prove this, so far, but it proves that their info was incorrect in this particular situation. So hang in there. Sometimes we have to go with our gut feeling until we find the proof we need to prove ot disprove what we feel. Diane Pollard Keiser
Someone asked about the surname Parish or Parrish in Granville Co. NC. Yes, the name is rather prominent in that county, at least in the 1750s and perhaps later. Will the person asking the question e-mail me privately? E.W.Wallace
Hello ALL, Due to health and other personal considerations, I have ceased my major genealogy activities. I have for a number of years researched the surnames CADDELL (& variations inc CALDER), GREEN, HENDERSON, ANDERSON, GREER, BANKS, BATTLE(S), BELL, BU(I)RCHFIELD, KENNAMER, KING, and SINGLETON wherever they lived. For any of you who desires further contact with me, I may still be reached at "bcaddell@hcnews.com". Shortly I will not be subscribed to any of the Rootsweb lists. Do you know if the Parish/Parrish's in Granville are connected to the Parish/Parrish's in Wake and Johnston Co, NC? Diane Pollard Keiser
On the Granville http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgranvi/new.htm Orphans page from 1749-1786, it shows: "George Floyd, 18 years and William Floyd, 14 years, orphans of William Floyd, bound to James Kimball, Sr. ..." That would make George born 1732 and William1736 and the father 20 years +/- prior to that. The earliest dates I have for a George Floyd is 1760 and for a William Floyd is 1743. Can anyone give me more information about these earlier Floyds listed in the Orphans records? I will gladly share what I have; however, some of it is not documented. To the person looking for info on Reuben Searcy, Have you checked the Granville County US Genweb Site at Rootsweb? I posted some Records several months ago, and this was among the entries under Bastardy Bonds: Sept.5, 1750- Elizabeth Searcy, charged Richard Hargrove with having begotten by her a bastard child. He is ordered to pay the Church warders of St. John's Parish 4 pounds proc. For maintainance of the child 1 year next ensuing. Sept. 5, 1754 - William, base born child of Elizabeth Searcy, bound to Reuben Searcy, to learn Shoemaker's trade. Will be 5 yrs old on April 30, 1754. I don't know if there is more info at the site, but it is well worth a visit to check out some of the data. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgranvi/new.htm Deloris Williams
Have you done a <A HREF="www.google.com">www.google.com</A> search on Reuben Searcy? Put the name in quotation marks. You really should post your query on the Madison Co., KY rootsweb and also the Granville Co. NC rootsweb. First you have to subscribe by inserting request somewhere in the address. (I am not thinking too well at present) MADKY-L@rootsweb.com <A HREF="mailto:NCGRANVI-L@rootsweb.com">NCGRANVI-L@rootsweb.com</A> I had contact in the past with a person who said he was descended from Reuben Searcy. Reuben had two wives: both named Susannah, I am told. The second one was said to be Susanna Jett. I have collected some information on Reuben Searcy, who was a county official [county clerk?] of Granville Co., NC but seems to have *commuted* to Madison Co., KY. Unless a citation is given for the following statements, this information should be checked against books and films concerning the counties in which Reuben Searcy either lived or conducted business. This is hearsay: Reuben's Children by Susannah Henderson The children of Reuben Searcy and Susannah Henderson were: Thomas (m. Ann Martin), Asa, Bennett, Robert, William, Henrietta, Polly, Elizabeth. Reuben's Children by Susannah Jett After Susannah Henderson's death, Reuben remarried to Susannah Jett, by whom he had eight children: Susan Searcy (1780-1819); Reuben Searcy (1782-?), Jesse Searcy (1784-?), Penelope Searcy (1786-?), Jane Searcy (6 Dec 1788-?), married William C. Source of the information was not noted. Examination of a recently published book by Jackie Couture, MADISON COUNTY, KENTUCKY, COURT ORDER BOOK A, 1787-1791 [Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1996] indicates that Reuben Searcy was physically present in that county during this time period. Many residents of Kentucky migrated to Tennessee, particularly to Sumner Co. Many North Carolinians went to Montgomery Co., TN. The following is from Jo Linn White and B. R. McBride, "Private Petitions in the North Carolina Legislative Papers: Revolutionary War Service-Related Benefits," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL, V. 2, p. 46. It is unclear precisely when the petition was made after 1785, although it seems to have been filed in 1804: "Searcy, Reuben. The petitioner, 'late of the County of Granville, now o f the State of Tennessee,' requests the General Assembly make retribution to him in the amount of 1193.10.6 pds., representing the value of three lost certificates issued by the Commissioners of Army Settlements at Halifax. He stated that he lost his pocketbook containing the Certificates and 'other valuable papers' in a woods in Granville County in 1785. One of the certificates was made out in the amount of 1,100 pds. to Richard Donald Cook, who sued him in Court, and 'compelled your petitioner ... to pay the full amount of the Certificate in cash pound by pounds with heavy costs. However, be aware that the Family History Library in Salt Lake City has many, many films of Madison Co., Ky and I believe, also of Granville Co. I have not studied any records of Tennessee for Reuben Searcy. This man is NOT my ancestor, but he was associated with my families in Granville Co. and also in Madison Co., KY. E.W.Wallace

It's the same at Genealogy.com. But NARA does say there are a lot of counties missing for the 1790 census. It should show a tax year. This is a substitute 1790 census information. A new MOORE Surname Y-Chromosome DNA Project has been established at Family Tree DNA, called MOORE-Worldwide. This project is intended to be inclusive of all MOOREs from any area and any spelling variant. The testing will be for the male Y-chromosome that is passed only from father to son. Therefore, the testing requires a male with the surname of MOORE (or variant.) The test analyzes either the 12 or 25 markers on the Y-chromosome. If the markers of two or more male individuals of same surname match, it indicates they descend from a common male ancestor. The project is being co-administered by Julia F. Wood, Jan Matlock and Marge Stockton. For more information, visit our website http://small-stuff.com/MOORE/ . To join, click on "Order Your DNA Test Kit." Fill out and submit the form and Julia, Jan or Marge will contact you. The preferred option is the 25-marker test, which more closely defines the timing of the common ancestor. The optional 12-marker test can be upgraded to the 25-marker test later if desired, from the original sample. The cost of testing is reduced for Surname Project members. On the website, your personal information is hidden and only the test results can be seen. If your name is not MOORE, but you are a MOORE relative, or if you are a female researcher of the MOORE family, you can still participate by purchasing a test kit for a male with the surname MOORE (any spelling). We are very excited about the prospects DNA testing offers for untangling our many MOORE ancestors. My particular interest is in the descendants of Thomas Moore of Southside Virginia, who migrated into Chatham, Granville and Orange Counties in NC in the late 1700s. If you might be a descendant of those Moores, or if you might be a descendant of Gov. James Moore of NC, I especially encourage you to join our project. Please join today! Marge Stockton
Hi everyone. A researcher emailed me on Maps for North Carolina, and I thought my answer might be of use to others since many people seem interested in this topic. Here are a few sites that might be of help. The first is for topographical maps which are referred to in an article at Ancestry.com. Ancestry has a lot of tips and links in their LEARNING CENTER that one can use to help them in their research. I suggest trying it out by searching through the center. For the maps just follow the link Under the heading FREE ONLINE TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS after you read the section in the article that explains how to use it. http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/columns/eastman/1797.asp#3 Next, is a collection of old maps for North Carolina. Just scroll down, and click on the images to get them enlarged: http://www.georgehoward.net/tarheelmaps.htm Here is the Main Index to the site that lists many sites where images are available online: http://www.ihrinfo.ac.uk/maps/imageus.html#states Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are available online. They have a few maps for North Carolina from the 19th century. This site does provide information about possible reconfiguration of your browser for access to the maps, which is a site from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, so I advise you to read it first to see if you want to do that: http://eresources.lib.unc.edu/eid/description.php?EIDID=861 (Click onto SANBORN MAPS NORTH CAROLINA) Here is a link to NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY FORMATION MAPS, which have clickable views of maps of NC from 1664 -1965. It does not contain any individual county maps, but it does give a good view of how the state formed during each year. http://www.segenealogy.com/northcarolina/nc_maps.htm A list of more recent maps for NC from the University of Texas at Austin might be of use to some: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/north_carolina.html By the way, the homepage for this site provides some interesting links for researching other things in North Carolina which you might want to check out. I use a GOOGLE.COM search many times when I wish to find possible research resources, so that's how I came across some of these sites. I would suggest looking through some of the above links to see if they may have something to offer that might help in your research. Good Luck.
