Tina, You are such an angel to devote your time and resources to provide help for other researchers on your website. I know I have always checked back at your Obituaries since I first saw them posted many, many months ago and think they are a godsend to many people researching in Granville. I will definitely check out your new site and I'm sure many others will also appreciate all of the good work you are doing. I also agree, that Nola is doing a great job in helping others, and I think we all owe you guys a great big "THANK YOU". Dear Listers, Can anyone enlighten me as to the earlier origins of the Dudleys mentioned in these two abstracted deeds? It is believed they were originally in Caroline Co., VA, based on other information cited below: Granville Co. NC Deed Bk. Q, p. 524: "Samuel Sneed and wife, Jane Sneed, and Mary Jeter deed to Rachael Dudley of Nottoway Co., VA for all their interests in the land and personal estate that descended to them by the death of William Dudley, deceased. Elizabeth Lee, wife of Andrew Lee, was another heir. Jan 25, 1801." (Z. H. Gwynn's KINFOLKS of Granville County, NC, p. 47): William Clayton Torrence, writing in WILLIAM AND MARY QUARTERLY, Series I, Vol. XXVI, 1917-1918 (Kraus reprint 1966), p 42, abstracted the following deed of Nottoway Co., VA: January 25, 1802. Samuel Sneed and Jane, his wife, and Mary Jeter, of Granville Co., North Carolina to Rachel Dudley, of Nottoway Co., Virginia, 600 pds currency, 133 acres in Nottoway Co. being part of the land on which William Dudley, decd, lived (the house tract) and is part of tract which descended to said Samuel Sneed and Jane, his wife, and Mary Jeter, and Elizabeth Lee, wife of Andrew Lee [Lea?], by the death of the aforesaid William Dudley, according to act of Virginia Assembly directing the course of descents. Explanation of relationships: Rachel Dudley of Nottoway Co., VA is believed to have been the widow of the deceased William Dudley. William Dudley is believed to have been the brother of the three females mentioned in the deeds, apparently recorded in two places--North Carolina in 1801 and in Virginia in 1802. Jane (Dudley) Sneed had been present at the marriage of Elizabeth, her probable sister, to Andrew Lea. Kathleen Booth Williams, MARRIAGES OF AMELIA CO., VA 1735-1815 (1961) indicates Jane Sneed was a witness to a Lea-Dudley marriage in 1769: "23 November 1769. LEA, Andrew and Elizabeth Dudley, dau. of Thomas Dudley, who consents. Wit. to consent, William Dudley and Jane Sneed. Sur. Thomas Dudley, Jr. p. L-1." Andrew Lea is later found in Caswell Co. NC deed books, which county was formed 1777, and then he is found still later in Person Co. NC records. (Although Elizabeth is said to have been dau. of Thomas Dudley, this contradicts other records. Clarification is needed.) Samuel Sneed of Granville Co.. NC, later of Person Co., NC had married Jane Dudley, place and date unknown, but probably in Virginia. Mary Jeter [Mrs. Samuel Jeter] was the former Mary Dudley. Elizabeth, wife of Andrew Lea, was their sister. We believe the Dudleys may have come from Caroline Co., but other than this document, we have not confirmed this: Caroline County, VA Order Book 1750-1752 [p. 248?]: "Jane and Mary Dudley orphans of Jno. Dudley made choice of Wm. Dudley to be their guardian, who with Edmd. Pendleton his security acknowledged their bond." p. 249 [8 March 1750/1] "The last will and testament of John Dudley was presented in Court by Wm. and John Dudley the executors therein named and proved by Jane Tompkins one of the witnesses who declared she saw Jno. Wily, Mary Watkins and John Dudley Jr. witness the will. Certificate is granted for obtaining a probate, who with Edmd. Pendleton their security acknowledged bond. "It is ordered that John Wily, John Sutton, Henry Burk and Richd. George appraise the estate of John Dudley. "William Dudley is appointed guardian to Ann Dudley orphan of John Dudley." (John Frederick Dorman, CAROLINE COUNTY, VIRGINIA ORDER BOOK, 1746-1754, PART THREE, 1750-1752 [Washington DC, 1970], p. 17) Submitted by E.W.Wallace
Hello, I am looking for the parents of Joel Rogers who was born in NC abt. 1798. I have found a lot of Rogers in Wake and Granville counties, but have not been able to find who his parents were. He was on the 1820 census for Bibb Co., Alabama, and married Sally Norred there in 1822. They had two sons, Marshall P. and William Rogers while in Alabama. They were in Weakley Co., TN in 1830. He was living next to Job, Jubilee and several other Rogers there. He had two sons James and George W. Rogers while there in TN. They moved to Leake Co., Mississippi and were there from 1835 through 1850. Joel bought property while in Leake Co. and it was near the town of Carthage. If anyone knows who his parents might have been, I would be very grateful. Thank you, Eileen Rogers Mullins nemullins@msn.com

I will no longer be posting new obituaries on the www.gcgs.org website but will have them on the following pages listed below with a few newer ones and more to come. If any of you wrote me and I did not respond please feel free to email me back again with the same request. I had to buy a new computer and was without one for a month. I have lost some of the request that were emailed to me. Sorry... I have updated the WPA Survey webpages and had added a few news ones. And WILL continue to add them all hopefully. I hope that the site will be easier to navigate than before. If you have any trouble viewing or seeing the pages please let me know. I have been comparing the obituaries with the WPA records and so far they have been accurrate! with a few name spelling mistakes but I am posting them as the original records are. These records are free at the Nc archives in Raleigh, nc and at the Richard Thornton library, Oxford NC.. obituaries: click here http://www.geocities.com/tina_tarlton/Old-Oxford-obituaries-10.htm WPA survey click here: http://www.geocities.com/tina_tarlton/Granville-Cemeteries-WPA.htm Please bare with me as I make the changes as I am the only one working on this.. If you have any trouble viewing the pages please let me know. I am hoping to add other records as well from Granville in the future...such as family stories of interest that I found in the old newspapers that I thought would be very useful as well as Granville county history that would be useful in searching . Dear North Carolinians, Since many of our colonial North Carolinians had Virginia roots, this website concerning early ferries in Virginia may be of interest to you. <A HREF="ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/misc/fery1702.txt">ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/misc/fery1702.txt</A> (I lifted this from a Virginia website, but I'm sure they don't mind.) Hello List, Would anyone know any of the Rogers who lived in Granville around 1790-1800 who would have had a son Joel Rogers born abt. 1798. He married Sally Norred in Bibb Co., AL in 1822 and had two sons Marshall P. and William Rogers while in AL. He was friends with Blount Cooper, lived in Weakley Co., TN in 1830 and had two sons while in TN - James and George W. Then I believe he lived the rest of his life out in Leake Co., MS. He was there from about 1835 - 1850 or so. He was on the 1840 and 1850 census there with all of his family. He had a daughter Caroline abt. 1838 while in Leake Co., MS. If anyone knows anything about him or his parents, I would be grateful. I have been trying to find out who his parents were for some time now. Hope some of you Parrish researches can answer a mystery for me. My 'grandpa' Reuben Jones (I descend from daughter Sylvania Jones who married Thomas Elliott) died in Halifax Co. VA. after 13 July 1811 and left a will (a copy can be found on the Halifax rootsweb archives site). Reuben Jones left Milly Wilkins, wife of John Wilkins, $50. Milly Parrish married John Wilkins. The mystery: This is the Reuben Jones that married Sarah (Griffin). $50 was big money back in 1811.......Who are Milly Parrish Wilkins parents and what is her connection to Reuben Jones? Mary
I am hoping someone out there might have some information on Peter & Mary ROBERSON or ROBERTSON or ROBINSON from Granville Co., NC. I am trying to research their family and as of now I have found them in the 1850 census listed as ROBERTSON, 1860 & 1880 census as Robinson. To add to the confusion, what little family history I have has the name as being Roberson! So this is why I have all three names listed. Here is what information I have on Peter & Mary: Peter Roberson...born abt. 1810 Mary..born abt. 1820 Their Children or children listed in their home on the census: Joseph born abt. 1839 PeterJr., abt. 1841 Elizabeth born abt. 1843 Martha born abt. 1844 Mary born abt. 1847 Fanny born abt. 1849 Lucy born abt. 1853 Mary born abt. 1854 James born abt. 1856 Jane born abt. 1857 Polly born abt. 1868 Isaac born abt. 1876 I have found this Peter & Mary Rob... in the Henderson District of Granville Co, NC on the 1850 & 1860 Census', and in the Kitrells Dist. of Granville Co, NC on the 1880 Census. Does anyone recognize this family? I believe this to be my Great-grandmother (Fanny Roberson(?) Walker.) family. I have very little information on her and I have been searching for about 6 years, trying to sort out all the Robersons, Robertson's and Robinson's in North Carolina of which there a many. Sharron
I'm looking for PETTIS graves. Stephen PETTIS had children in VA and NC. He remarried in Johnston Co., NC in 1814. But I don't know what happened to his first wife or his parents. Bill Allen <misterbill@pdq.net>
Bettye Heinrich asked what info I had regarding the date 11 aug 1792 attached to my David PARRISH. Halifax Co. Deed Book 15. 543. 11 Aug 1792. From John VAUGHAN of Mecklenburg Co. to David PARRISH of Halifax, for 72 pds. 10 shillings, about 277 acres in Halifax, bounded by the south side of Aaron's Creek in Crittenden's line. thence to James JONES, SIZEMORE, LOFTIS. Signed: John VAUGHAN Wit: Reuben JONES, Bartlett ELLIOT, Berry GREEN, Hampton WADE, Gre. BAYHAM Recorded: 26 March 1793. Reuben JONES married Sarah "Sally" GRIFFIN and are Aunt & Uncle to my g-g-g-grandmother Lucy GRIFFIN. Lucy GRIFFIN is daughter of Sally PARRISH & John Jr. GRIFFIN. Sally PARRISH is daughter of my David PARRISH per her marriage records. So I am sure I have the correct David PARRISH. These familes lived Aaron's Creek, Hico Creek vicinity of Halifax near the Mecklenburg - Halifax border just above the Virginia - North Carolina state line. Granville Co. NC is right below the land these families lived on. james wall
Dear Mr. Wall, You have overwhelmed us with information about your Parish families, but one of your sentences was: My David PARRISH died after 11 Aug 1792 the last hard date I have located that connects to him. Suggestions: A long-time friend, and a crackerjack genealogist as well as author, says this: If you do not make up family group sheets (in pencil, preferably) for each of your families and cite your sources at the bottom or on back, then you are going to have a mish-mash of a pedigree. Of course, if you use a computer, then you can easily make changes on your family group sheets, but you may not note the discrepancy in dates that way!! One thing you have to watch for: Do the dates make sense? I got misled by a long-ago so-called genealogist of Granville Co. whose old book, published originally in the late 1930s or early 1940s, long before we had much technology, like photocopiers and microfilm to speak of, and certainly not computers, skipped a generation in my family--he telescoped the family. Had I not made up family group sheets to reflect this vast age gap, I would still be up a creek, genealogically speaking. Although there were exceptions, the longevity of our colonial folks was generally not very long--so if you have a fellow fathering babies when he is age 90 (according to some stuff on the Ancestral File for one of my ancestors), you had better start all over again. Another estimate on the part of genealogists is that fellows generally (there are always exceptions, of course) did not marry until about age 26, when they had acquired some land to support a family. Brides could be any age. First wives were generally not too much younger than the husbands, but one always finds exceptions. (I had one ancestor, of later vintage, who seemed to be attracted by rich, sometimes older, widows, who already had children, land, slaves, etc. Then he proceeded to sell off their property. He had to move from one State to another further west because of bankruptcy.) Anyway, back to your sentence about David Parrish. If you suspect this fellow was in Virginia, look around your residence for a library which may have this set of books: The 1787 Census of Virginia by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love. The third volume of this three-volume set is an index to the preceding volumes. These books have not been filmed. There are booklets for each county sold by WillowBend books, but if you do not know where your Parishes were, then the booklets are probably of little use to you. This so-called 1787 census is a compilation of all the Virginia County personal property tax lists for 1787. It is a good people locator for Virginia residents, which at that time included the counties in Kentucky, what is now West Virginia, and any other land claimed by Virginia, which was considerable in 1787. This compilation is to make for the lost 1790 census of Virginia. Say, I am looking for a particular surname--and its variant spellings (always check those). I photocopy the index pages in Vol. 3 for that surname and then go through the other two preceding volumes which contain those page numbers. That way, I am able (unless it is a common surname) to zero in on those Virginia or Kentucky counties in which my people lived. To my surprise, I found my Harris ancestor had personal property in both Virginia and in Kentucky. So that means I have to search both counties for that time period. Many Granville Co. folks did own land in the Virginia counties adjoining Granville Co. and also, they may have owned land in other North Carolina counties. Some early tax lists exist for North Carolina, particularly Granville co. and Orange Co. Some of these have been published in older issues of the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal. You may have to search for those, but the Allen Co. Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana may be able to help you locate those. One of my Granville Co. ancestors, who died in 1759, patented land all over Southside Virginia, which he gave to his sons, and then, probably being in failing health, removed to Granville Co. shortly before his death. His several sons were deeded land in the adjoining Virginia counties, but, like many of our ancestors, they did not stay long. Some moved to central North Carolina, while others headed for South Carolina. (Always on the move.) Other genealogists make up timelines for each ancestor. This is helpful to sort out persons who have the same name--for generations!!! Some guidelines for research are on the <A HREF="www.familysearch.org">www.familysearch.org</A> I suggest you click all the links on that website and find out what may be available for you, including some forms which you can download. Look at the research outlines which are also online. Lots of luck! If you are desperate, you can access the tlcgenealogy.com website and ask for a surname search, which is rather inexpensive. They do not provide a search of EVERY film which exists, but their search may give you a head start on where (the localities) the Parish surname did exist. E.W.Wallace
I would like to know what item that Mr. Wall has that shows his David Parrish was alive on 19 August 1792 ? Where was his David Parrish on that date ? My David Parrish died in August 1792 in Granville CO NC . He had a son, David, that he willed 400 ac of land in Chatham Co NC. Regards, Bettye
While we are discussing Parrish surname, I continue to seek information on Susannah Parrish, who married Timothy Eakes in Granville County in 1776, according to the book, Early Marriages of Granville County. A William Parrish signed their marriage bond, and later Timothy Eakes signed the marriage bond of Mazie Parrish. I do not know what connection William or Mazie was to Susannah. Any information will be appreciated. Laurice Bell
The Path of the Parrishes by Luther C. Davis, Jr is shown on Ann Woodlief s website. Luther C. Davis, Jr made a mistake on David Parrish m. Judith Holland. He shows them being in Granville Co NC with David dying in 1792. That is the wrong David. My ancestor, David Parrish, was the one that died in Granville Co NC in 1792. His wife was also named Judith but she was not Judith Holland. He sold land in Goochland CO VA abt 1753 and removed to Granville Co NC. He wrote his will in August 1789 and it was proved in the August court session 1792. I have a copy of his will from the NC State Archives and Library. According to the Douglas Register (Goochland CO VA) David Parrish was b in 1737 and Judith Holland was b in 1738. They are shown as marrying there in January 1758 and their first child was born in December 1758 (Martha Holland Parrish). For along time I thought that David and Judith Holland Parrish were my ancestors and I did alot of research on both families. Regards, Bettye Heinrich
