I am researching these families found in the 1700's in Granville Co, NC - Reeves, Williamson and Regan/Regin/etc Virginia H Regan
This sounds like a good idea. I'm researching families that were in Granville, Surry, Davidson counties starting in the 1750's. Chamness; Kleinert/Clinard; Pegg; Phillips (Aaron). > It's a new year and many new people are on this list. Information came from North Carolina Archives search where I searched for the surname GROVES. I came up with two titles of interest: 1756, Office of Sec. of State, Granville Proprietary Land office. Mars ID # 12.12.27.59. "Descriptive references for land: Grassy Creek Plat: 1760 May 5 339 acres. Gives personal names also. Another of interest was a Halifax Co. Deed (which was found in Marg. Hoffman Bk. of Granville Co. deeds which described Great Swamp 1760 and mentions Robert Kelly GROVES. This was also listed on N.C. Archives when I searched for GROVES. I tried to get into Mars to see about land grants for GROVES, but was unable to do so. The url for that search is http://www.ncarchives.dcr.state.nc.us/ I am looking for any information on that Robert Kelly Groves of 1760 as I think he may be the father of my forebear Joseph Kelly Groves Sr. of Duplin Co. N.C. Thanks for your information. I have just begun to search in this area. Wanda Groves Kohlmann
Although you received an excellent answer, I thought I'd let you know about Maps By Mail. Over 30 years and using 3500 historical maps, Garland P. Stout researched and drew all 100 NC counties. These scaled maps show locations of rivers, creeks (Grassy Creek along with Grassy Creek Baptist Church), mountains, ferry sites, mill sites, rural churches and cemeteries, towns and post office sites are identified on the map along with symbols. Each large (Granville: 23"X36") map comes with an index for easy reference of past and present sites. The Garland Stout maps cost $20 each. You can find these counties maps in addition to others at <www.mapsbymail.com> I have asked Santa for several of these wonderful references and have used them to great advantage. Kay Fuller Mitchell
You wrote: Is anyone familiar with the Grassy Creek area? 640 acres for Lewis Collins, Howard Groves. Comment: Grassy Creek flows or did flow into Virginia also. Many families held land in both states--NC and VA. I was trying to discover Nutbush Creek in Granville Co. and discovered that it now empties into Kerr Reservoir. That may be true of Grassy Creek also. What is the source of the information you posted? Zae Hargett Gwynn years ago abstracted many records of early Granville Co., NC which is now many counties, including Vance Co. Lately Timothy Rackley has published some deeds taking up where Gwynn left off, and he also has published some wills of Granville Co. Look at the Family History LIbrary Catalog on www.familysearch.org for books and films (films you can borrow through an LDS center near your home) on old Granville Co., NC. Another author, recently published, is Thomas McAdory Owen. And, of course, books by Margaret M. Hofmann about the land grants are quite useful. DO NOT rely heavily on an old book about Granville Co. by Worth S. Ray. Some of the conclusions he reached about some of the genealogies of the families are grossly flawed. E.W.Wallace who has several lines of colonial Granville Co., NC
Do you know how Groves Howard is connected to this family? Thanks Sandy Wainwright California

Can anyone do a lookup for me? I am looking for the HEFLIN CEMETERY in Granville Co, NC. I would like to know who is buried in it. I am looking for Thomas SMITH, along with his wife, Ava HEFLIN SMITH or children. I think Ava or Amy HEFLIN's parents, Charles Cook and Elizabeth COOKE HEFLIN are buried there. The HEFLIN's lived in the Wilton area. Thomas SMITH was born abt 1800 in Granville Co, NC. I do not have a date for his death. He married Ava/Amy HEFLIN, January 03, 1824, Granville Co, NC. She was born abt 1792 in Fort Creek, Wilton, Granville Co, NC. I am looking for a death date for her, too. I believe that all children were born in Granville Co, NC. They were Elizabeth 'Eliza' Maton SMITH, b. abt 1824, Prudence SMITH, b. abt 1826, Arthur T. SMITH, b. abt 1828, William SMITH, b. abt 1832, Mary SMITH, b. abt 1834, Lucy SMITH, b. abt 1836, Ira W. SMITH, b. abt 1838, Candice 'Candace' SMITH, b. abt 1842. They seemed to have moved to Wake Co, NC abt 1860. His brother, Eldridge SMITH had moved to Wake Co, NC and I am trying to track down the area that they may have been buried. My first look is the HEFLIN CEMETERY since her parents were buried there.

I had sent out a note regarding a temporary free site for access to Heritage Quest. Unfortunately, after a few days, people weren't able to access the free information. I had sent a note to their technical support and after a few notes, received the following: Dear Diane, The site unknowingly violated a copyright agreement with us. They basically can not post free access, even on a trial basis to this material. Best Regards, Susan Dziadzio ProQuest Technical Support. I, fortunately enough, was able to get copies of 3 books I had been looking for quite awhile for. Sorry that the rest of you weren't as fortunate. It would have been a great access of info during the temporary free period. I had also received the following, with regards to accessing this site: Dear Diane Keiser, The trial you are attempting to access is no longer valid. You will need to contact your local library to see if they subscribe to HeritageQuest Online or ProQuest Historical New York Times. If your library does not have a subscription to these products, you can obtain an individual subscription to HeritageQuest from www.genealogy.com and ProQuest at www.xanedu.com. Hello, There was a Daniel Rogers who was born in Granville Co. in 1755. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. He was supposed to have lived a while in Chester Co., SC and then moved to Christian Co., Ky, Henry Co., TN and died in Tippah Co., MS. I know he had a son named Wiley Rogers, but don't know of any other family members. Would anyone know who he was or especially what the names of the members of his family were (wife, children, parents). I would be very thankful for any information that anyone might have on thisi family. Here are some notes on a Jeter family of Granville Co., NC. Mrs. Jeter, if I remember correctly, was a Dudley, a sister to Mrs. Samuel Snead [Jane Dudley] of colonial Granville Co., NC and later of Person Co., NC. Jane (Dudley) Snead is probably my ancestress, based on preponderance of evidence. Her husband made a deed of gift to my ancestor, Samuel Farrar Williams, whose first wife was Hannah Snead. The deed of gift named eight children, omitting the name of a ninth child, who is probably my ancestor. That is where the preponderance of evidence comes in, based on research of Henderson Co., KY where my ancestor migrated ca 1806 (according to his rejected Rev War pension). In: Granville Co. Wills, Estates, Bk. 4, this deed of gift appears: "Samuel Sneed of Person County, NC to Samuel Farrar Williams of Granville Co., for 5 pds, 6 negroes, cattle and furniture for the use of his children: William, John, Alfred, Dudley, Peggy, Nancy, Betsy, and Ginsey Williams, for rearing and educating them and only for that purpose. Aug 1, 1796. Wts; Reuben Morse, Thomas Jordan." (Zae Hargett Gwynn, Abstracts of the early deeds of Granville County, North Carolina, 1746- 1765) If you use this information in your genealogies, or webpages, please cite the sources. This is expected of ALL genealogists (amateur or professional) these days. SAMUEL JETER (d. by 1802) There are variant spellings of the surname Jeter, including Jeator, which is found in Caroline Co. VA in 1760. (Ambrose, John, and Thos. are found in Caroline Co., VA Order Book, 1759-1763. This has not been read as of 2/99.) The surname Jeter is found in 1760 in these Virginia counties: Amelia, Lunenburg, Halifax, Onslow Co., NC, Essex. The full name, Samuel Jeter, is found in these two counties: Caroline, Essex. The name William Geter [Jeter] is found in Lunenburg Co. (DB 3-416) (Source: TLC Genealogy, VIRGINIA IN 1760; A RECONSTRUCTED CENSUS [Miami Beach: TLC Genealogy, 1996]) Samuel Jeter was the husband of Mary Dudley, sister of Jane Dudley Sneed, wife of Samuel Sneed, and sister of Elizabeth Dudley Lea, wife of Andrew Lea, believed to be later of Caswell Co., NC. Is this the Jeter to whom reference is made in the land patent of Lydall Bacon, Lunenburg Co., VA, in 1768? (No Dudleys are listed in the Lunenburg Co. patent books. 1746-1916. However, William Dudley, brother-in-law of Samuel Jeter, married in Lunenburg Co. in 1784. Therefore, the Jeters and the Dudleys may have lived in adjoining counties.) Patent Bk 37-276, 643 A [Lunenburg Co., VA] 20 July 1768, Lydall Bacon on branches Meherrin R & Meadow Cr., adj Jeter, Walker, Tucker. (Adapted from TLC Genealogy, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA LAND PATENTS, 1746-1916 [Miami Beach: 1990], p. 77) A William Jeter, Jr. received Virginia Patent D-541, 1 Feb 1761, for 401 A on branches of Little Creek [Lunenburg Co.]. (Ibid., p. 81) As late as 1770, a Samuel Jeter was purchasing land in Lunenburg Co. It is unknown whether this was his residence. Lunenburg Co. DB 11-423 [condensed from abstract] 13 Dec 1770, Joseph Gentry in North Carolina, Agness Gentry, his wife, Allen Gentry, Mary Gentry, his wife of L and Cumberland Parish, to Samuel Jeter of Lunenburg... lower side of ready [Reedy] Cr etc. /s/ Joseph (X his mark) Gentry, Allen (A his mark) Gentry. Wit: Wm Jeter, Francis Degrafenreidt, Wm. Jeter Jr. Rec Dec 13, 1770; Mary relinquished her right of dower. (Adapted from TLC Publ., LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS, 1764-1771 [Miami Beach: 1990], p. 91) Earlier deeds in DB 10-16 indicate that William Jeter was a neighbor of Capt Degrafinrad [sic] and that Jeter's wife Margaret relinquished her dower rights. At one time Samuel Jeter lived in Halifax Co., NC as indicated in Granville Co. DB G-221: Jacob Gray and Jane his wife of Granville Co., NC to Samuel Jeter of Halifax Co., NC 10 May 1764, for 100 pds.... land on water of Flat Creek.. Harris Gillum's con., across Fishing Creek, Jordan's corn. tree... 148 acres of land. Jacob Gray, Jane Gray. Wit: Samuel Snead, Christmas Ray, Drury Kimbell. Granville Co. Ct. 1764 (adapted from Timothy W. Rackley, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS 1763-1766 [Kernersville, NC: Privately published, 1999], p. 42) Some Possible Children of Samuel Jeter Marriage record of Granville Co. Augustine Davis Jr. to Mary Jeetor. Bond dated: Sept. 2, 1777- (2?). Signed by Aug'n Davis Jr. & Sam'l Jeter [sic] Wit: Reuben Searcy. (Thomas McAdory Owen, HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF OLD GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1800 [Greenville, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1993] p. 75) Philip Sneed, son of Samuel and Jane Snead had his marriage bond of 1788 secured by himself and Barnet Jeter, his probable maternal cousin. Possibly another son of the Jeters was Dudley Jeter, who was a witness to a deed of James Willis to John Hogan, 8 Feb 1775 (DB K-241) near Reedy Branch. (Timothy W. Rackley, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS 1772-1778 [Kernersville, NC: Privately published, 2001], p. 54) Approximate Death Date of Samuel Jeter From "Claims of British Merchants after the Revolutionary War": "Jeter, Samuel. Granville Co. L1.11.2. 1 May 1776. Died about the Year 1793 or 1794. Left considerable property which was divided among his children, vizt. - Dudley, now in Wake County; Robert, now in Granville County; Abner, now in Georgia; and two daughters who are all at this time in good circumstances. He was solvent at the Peace and until his death. Informant: William Hicks Jr. of Granville Co. (56)" The original number of the claim (on microfilm) is in parenthesis. (Ransom McBride, "Claims of British Merchants after the Revolutionary War," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, Aug 1993, p. 154.) That Samuel was deceased by 1802 seems to be indicated by the entry in Granville Co. court minutes, November court 1802: Robert Jeter proved deed from Samuel and Jones [must be Jane] Sneed and Mary Jeter to Robert Dudley for land in Nottoway County, VA dated 25 Jan 1802. (Source: Z. H. Gwynn, COURT MINUTES OF GRANVILLE CO., NC 1746-1820, p. 199). Stephen Sneed (whose mother was the former Jane Dudley), acted as his father's attorney in the settlement of the estate of William Dudley of Nottoway Co, VA. Robert Dudley is believed to have been the son of William Dudley, deceased, and his probable wife, Rachel Dudley. Possibly he was a brother. The name of Samuel Jeter appears on the 1769 list of Granville Co. taxables. Granville Co. Deed P-179 [incomplete] shows Jeter made a deed of gift to his grandchildren, Caty Davis and Augustine Jeter Davis, daughter and son of Augustine Davis, late of the State .... Jeter appears in the 1786 census of Granville Co., Ragland's District. Samuel Jeeter [sic] 1-2-1-7-3-14 1st figure - white males 21 to age 60 2nd figure - white males under 21 and over 60 3rd figure - white females of every age 4th figure - blacks of each sex from 12 to 50 5th figure - blacks upwards 50 and under 12 6th figure - no. of inhabitants (total no. in each household) ("Granville Co.:-1786 Census (140 Families Left Out of 1790 Census of Granville Co." NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGY, VOL. XIV, No. 3) A deed abstracted by Zae Hargett Gwynn in KINFOLKS OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, gives names of some of the male children: Dudley Jeter of Wake Co., NC Barnett Jeter of Georgia Robert Jeter of Granville Co., NC Mary Jeter of Wake Co., NC deed to Thomas Satterwhite of Granville Co., land whereon the late Samuel Jeter lived, 8 Jan 1797. (p. 142) Apparently the widow Jeter nee Mary Dudley was residing with or near her son Dudley Jeter of Wake Co. Submitted by E.W.Wallace

I am unfamiliar with the William J. Williams of whom you write. You may get some answers to your posts if you include DATES and PLACES. Queries require three items, even if they are guesses: Name (complete if possible) Date (or time period) Place (or best guess) Some of my Williams ancestry: William Williams of Granville Co., NC who died Dec 1775 (testate) at Boonesborough, then in VA but now in KY, according to my many-years' research, had only one surviving son: Samuel Farrar Williams (b. 1759 Granville Co., NC, according to his rejected Rev War claim filed in Henderson Co., KY). Samuel F.' s older brother, John "Jacky" Williams died not long after the father's death, according to a letter written by Col. Richard Henderson to Jacky's uncle, Judge John Williams of Granvile Co. Col. Henderson was a maternal cousin to Judge John Williams, and to the Judge's three brothers: William (as above), Nathaniel, and Charles of the Nutbush Creek area of old Granville Co. This letter was published in one of these two valuable sets of books: North Carolina Colonial Papers or North Carolina State Papers. (Both great sources for locating early settlers of North Carolina, giving time and sometimes place.) Samuel Farrar Williams, who must have died ca 1838 when he disappears from tax lists of Henderson Co., had several sisters but they, of course, would not bear the surname Williams. As far as my research has determined, those sisters and their husbands did not migrate to Kentucky. At least two of them remained in North Carolina, and another is said in a secondary--or worse--source to have died in Wilson Co., TN. Good luck in searching the Williams name!!! It takes LOTS of research. Linkage to my branch of Williams in Henderson Co. is based on a bail bond, which an avid researcher in Kentucky found by flipping through some unfiled books in the Henderson Co. courthouse!!!!
