    1. Harris' In Granville County Tax Records From 1746-1764
    2. Ira L. Harris III
    3. Source: Granville County Tax Records From 1746-1764 http://members.aol.com/vafdking/grantax1.htm Editor's Note: For reasons that are not clear, only a few of the Granville Tasxables for the period of 1746 to 1763 have been abstracted. Below are individuals abstracted from sheets copied from the North Carolina archives. Abstracts were copied with the original spelling in the order as they appear on the list. The slaves and number of the tithables have not been provided. When the last name was not readable, the line was skipped. Most of these sheets cover areas of Granville that would now fall into Warren County. Readers are encouraged to check the source document to validate the findings and gather the aditional information. Also please feel free to provide me with an estimate of the date of any of the undated sections. You other comments are also appreciated. 1749 by unknown Charles Harris Roburt Harris Daniel Harris Michel Harris West Harris Joseph Harris 1749 by unknown Edwd. Part of them belong to the West Harris line --- that is part of the IOW line. But I don't think all of the early ones do. Can anyone shed light on which early ones are, or are not, part of a particular line? Could some of these early Harris' be part of the line of Robert Harris of Ware Creek, York County, Virginia? They went up through Hanover and New Kent County, Virginia. Could some of these be his sons or grandsons? Any insight is appreciated. Please respond through HH so that others may be helped. Ira L. 1. Henrietta Henderson--Widow of Richard Henderson of Colonial Goochland Co., VA
    2. I neglected to add to my post about Richard Henderson of colonial Goochland Co., VA info about his widow Henrietta. (They, based on land records and wills of colonial Virginia, were parents of Samuel Henderson, early residnet of Granville Co., NC. Note, Henrietta Henderson is of Cumberland Co., south of the James River. Cumberland was formed from Goochland Co. Submitted by E.W.Wallace, CA HENRIETTA (--). WIR02240 widow of Richard Henderson of Goochland Co. Refer to the biography of her husband, Richard Henderson I. There is a reference to a Cumberland Co. deed executed by Henrietta Henderson Aug 1749. Grantee deed index for Cumberland Co., VA lists the following grantees for 26 Feb 1749: Grantee Grantor Henderson, James Henderson, Henrietta [Bk] 1-113 250 A " Nathan " " " 250 A " Samuel " " " 250 A (Film SL 30,748 - Cumberland Co., VA Grantee Index A-Z) From Cumberland Co. DB 1-113: I, Henneratta Henderson of the Parish of Southam and C[umberland], for divers causes and for the natural love I have for my sons, Sammuel Henderson, James Henderson, & Nathan Henderson, & for their better advancement in the world, at my decease, I give them a certain tract of 250 acres of land whereon I now live, in the Parish of Southam & C & on the branches of Great Guinea [Cr.]. The land is to be equally divided among my said 3 sons (but with the provision that my son Nathan shall have the plantation whereon I now live included in his third part of the land). Signed Aug 28, 1749 - Hennereter H Henderson. Wwit - Aaron Butler, Nathaniel Henderson, Edward Handerson. Recorded Feb 26, 1749. (TLC Genealogy, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS, 1749-1752, [Miami Beach, FL) Judge Bazile (see bio of Richard Henderson I) refers to the deeds of these three men who sold the land to Charles Lee, one of the grantors being Samuel Henderson of Granvel [sic] Co., NC. Suggestion: If you think you are descended from this family of Hendersons, some of whom went to South Carolina, if I remember correctly, then cut and paste this info--along with the citations, so you can replicate my findings--into a word processing program. I hope your computer genealogy program has a memo or biographical field and will allow you to put some flesh on the bones of your genealogy. Since a good many of the descendants of Richard Henderson of Goochland Co. and of his wife Henrietta of Cumberland Co., VA were active in the world of politics and in the military, you may want to try to find the website Political Graveyard. Not all the material is accurate, but it is a good place to begin. Since my lineage is full of common surnames, the only way I can sometimes sort them out is to study their neighbors. That is one of the reasons I study the Hendersons--they were kinsmen of my common-name ancestors (which I decline to state at this time)!!! Not a Henderson descendant but a descendant of some of their kinsmen, E.W.Wallace

    1. Re: NCGRANVI-D Digest V04 #35
    2. Re Mrs. Taylor in Williamson Co., Tennessee: You say she was in the 1830 census with several young children. I do not do Tennessee research, and therefore my suggestions may not apply to Tennessee. However, in other states, when a lady is widowed in this general time period, there is generally a guardian for the underage children. (Women, with some few exceptions, had few rights. Besides the idea of guardianship is to protect the property, not the children. Be sure to check out whether there was later a change of guardianship, as the mother may have remarried. In that case, most times the present guardian resigns and the stepfather becomes the guardian, sometimes to the displeasure, I have found in court records, of the ward (child). Even if the widow moves from one jurisdiction to another--even from one State to another--there may still be a court-appointed guardian for the underage children. In many States, at age 14 a child could choose his/her own guaardian. You may find the answer in court records. If there are not separate orphans' court records, as in some states, the guardianship reports/appointments/bonds may be found in one, or both, of these kinds of record: probates court records This means a lot of research, but genealogists always want to know the answer to the next question, do we not? I personally use the Family History Library catalog a lot--to determine when a county was formed, whether any records of the right time period exist for that jurisdcition, and so on. Also on familysearch.org there probably is a research guide or outline for Tennessee. If you can find a guide for Tennessee, check out the topics Probates, Court Records, tax records (if necessary), land records. Sometimes years later the grown-up heirs to the deceased parent are selling the property. I don't know how available are the index to North Carolina marriage bonds on microfiche. My own large LDS library has them. You might search for ALL the Taylors, searching both the bride and the groom indexes--that is, if they are available to you. I hope this gives you a few ideas as to where to look for more information. E.W.Wallace

    1. Richard Henderson of Cumberland Co. and his sons
    2. Dear Henderson researchers, There have been many misstatements about the parentage of Samuel Henderson (wife Elizabeth Williams) of colonial Granville Co., NC. Please correct your lineage if you descend from this particular Henderson family. There seems to be little evidence to link other Henderson families to this particular one, although new evidence is always being located. There is good indication in extant colonial Virginia records that the father of Samuel Henderson, later of Granville Co., NC and two of his brothers was one Richard Henderson and that Richard's wife was Henrietta. They were of Goochaland Co. VA (formed from Henrico Co., Tuckahoe Creek being part of the natural boundary) and later of Cumberland Co., south of the James River. There may be earlier patents of Henrico co. (If so, please inform me.) Index cards of land office grants at the Virginia State Archives given the following information (gathered before the internet became popular with genealogists): Henderson, Richard 30 Jun 1743 Goochland Co. 450 A. on both sides of Great Guinea Creek. Patent Bk 21 (1742-43), p. 378. 1748 Goochland Co., VA will of Richard Henderson WB?-424 (abstracted) Will of Richard Henderson of Southam Parish, Goochland to sons Samuel, James, and Nathan, and to daughters Mary Henderson and Henrietta Henderson, 1 shilling each, at 21. To my brother Edward Henderson, 200 acres off of tract I live on, between his plantation and mine. To my wife Henrietta, all rest of my land and estate and she to be executrix. Dated 10 Feb 1745. Wit: John (X) Cook, Tyree Harris, Nathaniel Henderson. /s/ Rich. Henderson. Recorded 21 Jun 1748. (Benjamin B. Weisiger, GOOCHLAND CO. WILLS, p. 24.) CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA RECORDS Abstracted deed of Cumberland Co., VA, reads: Cumberland Co. DB 1-113 I, Henneratta Henderson of the Parish of Southam and C[umberland], for divers causes and for the natural love I have for my sons, Samuel Henderson, James Henderson, & Nathan Henderson, & for their better advancement in the world, at my decease, I give them a certain tract of 250 acres whereon I now live, in the Parish of Southam and C[umerland] & on the branches of Great Guinea [Cr]. The land is to be equally divided among my said 3 sons (but with the provision that my son Nathan shall have the plantation whereon I now live included in his third part of the land). Signed Aug 28, 1749 - Henereter H Henderson. Wit - Aaron Butler, Nathaniel Henderson, Edward Henderson. Recorded Feb 26, 1749. (TLC Genealogy, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEEDS, 1749-1752 [Miami Beach, FL: TLC Genealogy, 1990], p. 12) The evidence is clear that Samuel Henderson, son of Richard I, was physically present in Granville Co., NC before the 1749 recordation of the will of Richard Henderson of Goochland Co. (the probable patriarch). The abstracted will does not indicate the father is bequeathing land to his children, either sons or daughters, but instead to his brother, Edward, but his wife Henrietta is executrix. However, later, the widowed Henrietta Henderson of Cumberland Co., in Feb 1749, deeded the land to her three sons, and evidence is that Samuel Henderson "of Granvel Co." later sold his share. (In Granville Co., Samuel Henderson was witness to the first deed recorded in Granville Co., DB A-1, John Wade to Peter Hill, dated 1 Sep 1746. He may have been "commuting" from North Carolina to Virginia.) The Family History Library film for Cumberland Co., VA grantor index is is 30,743, I believe. (Double check the FHL online catalog to see if I have this correct.) DB 1-333 May -- 1757 Edward Henderson to Lee, Charles - 200 A - Southam Parish [This is the elder Richard Henderson's brother] Deed Bk 2-34 - Mar 26, 1753 Nathaniel Henderson to Lee, Charles - 230 A Guinea Cr. DB 2-485 - June 23, 1759 [4?] Samuel Henderson to Lee, Charles - 200 A Guinea Cr DB 3-66 June 23, 1760 James Henderson to Lee, Charles - [acreage not given] A puzzle: A deed to Charles Lee in the same time period: 1754 Lee, Charles from Cooke, Clayton DB 2-163 250 A Guinea Creek The deed from Samuel Henderson to Lee specifies that he is of Granville Co. NC. Please check these documents for more detail. Probably all the films are at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, and may be borrowed through your nearby LDS FHC for a small fee, for a limited time. Samuel Henderson is not my direct ancestor. Samuel's wife, Elizabeth reported to be Williams. If her surname is correct, as so many genealogies specify, then she would be my umpteen great-aunt!!! Please pass this on to other lists which you think might be interested. E.W.Wallace

    1. Virginia County Formations Beginning 1776 or so
    2. Since many of our early North Carolina ancestors (some going on to Tennessee or even Kentucky) came from Virginia, this information may be helpful to you: You may want to explore this website, which was given recently on one of Dick Eastman's newsletters. _http://www.newberry.org/ahcbp/ie/index.html_ (http://www.newberry.org/ahcbp/ie/index.html) There are county formation maps of Virginia, West Virginia, and California. Unfortunately for me, however, it seems that the maps for Virginia begin in late 1776--kinda late for some of us who read colonial abstracts/records!! Nonetheless, it is handy to know that this is online, and I don't have to run downstairs to find my BIG atlas by Michael L. Doran or the more recent one by DeLorme. There is a chart on another screen which gives the history of the formation of the counties. I was interested in Richmond Co., which was formed from Old Rappahannock. I learned I need to look at records of the progeny counties also!!! Always something new to learn! E.W.Wallace

    3. I want to share some good resources I have located recently through the rootsweb mailing list. Here are a few of my top ones I found most useful: http://www.uswars.net/1775-1783/ List of most units and battles of the revolutionaty war. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ Great for finding civil war ancestors. http://www.genealogyinc.com/maps/uscf.htm Links to county formation maps. Neat to see how county lines have changed over the years and how you can live in the same location but be located in 3 different counties in a 10 year time frame. http://www.mycensusmaps.com Links to county Census maps. Kinda like the above link only shows every ten years and overlays the previous census year so you can compare the two. VERY USEFUL. http://www.ftm2005.com/ The newest version of Familytreemaker just came out. This site show how much they changed the format from ftm 11. I am wanting to know from someone if it looks like a good investment to purchase the program or just stick with version 11. I could probobly list ALL my favorites but these are new to me and have turned out to be real gems. Lorine Dornin

    3. Hi all.....long time no chat. I'm trying to find a good map that shows exactly where "Lemay's Cross Roads" was located. I believe it was on what is now Highway 56 from Wilton to Franklinton, but I'm not sure. It would have to be vintage 1807-1839, as that is when Lemay's Cross Roads was a post office. Thanks to all.............. Don Dye texdye@msn.com<mailto:texdye@msn.com>

    1. Granville County Census question
    2. JIM WILKINS
    3. Hi, I am new to the list. I am researching my Madison and McCaslin line from Granville County. Bailey Madison, b. 1794 Phoebe McCaslin, b1815 I think Bailey Madison's parents were Peyton Madison and Elizabeth Bailey. Phoebe McCaslin's father may have been William McCaslin. I was wondering if anyone had access to the 1810, 1820, 1830, and/or 1840 Granville census? I have the page number on each one if anyone is able to do a lookup. I only found one Madison in each census in the index I looked at. Thanks. Susan Wilkins

    1. The Peter Bryce Searcy Map of Colonial Granville County
    2. James & Betty Harris
    3. Dear List, I have in my possession a copy of the book, "The Lost Tribes of North Carolina, Part II: Colonial Granville County and Its People", compiled and edited by Worth S. Ray, reprinted for Clearfield Company by Genealogical Publishing Co., 2002. Perhaps some of you are aware of this book. The book contains a copy of the Peter Bryce Searcy Map showing Locations of Homesites of Colonial Families in Granville County. The map covers two pages and is, therefore, rather small. Additionally, the type is tiny and in many instances not very clear. I wonder if anyone on the list would know where I could find, for purchase, a large, clearer copy of the map. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, James F. Harris Virginia Beach, VA jf-bjh@cox.net

    2. Mary "Polly" NUNN married William AIKEN in 1797. She was a daughter of James (sometimes referred to as Dennis) NUNN and Lucy, who might have been a CLAYTON. James died before 1792, and Lucy remarried. I have not been able to identify the parents of James NUNN. I have not been able to identify the parents of Lucy, but in 1804 Betsey Hoofman and her husband, Benjamin, gave to William Byars and his wife Lucy (mother of said Betsey) all their rights in the estate of Thomas Clayton, grandfather of Betsey Hoofman, and also all their rights in the estate of James Nunn, father of Betsey Hoofman. Any help will be much appreciated. Tom Aiken

    3. Carol, about your post below,,,,,, I am very interested in how your Grangers could be spelled Crenshaw. Would the name Bartlett Crenshaw mean anything to you? "I am researching the CRENSHAW family (also spelled GRANGER, GRENSHAW, etc.) of Granville Co, NC and the families into which they married and associated during the 18th and early 19th century. Granville County families with with connections to the Crenshaw families were: FRAZIER, HART, HESTER, BATES, JONES, CHANDLER, COOK, WILLIAMSON. I am also researching the families of Thomas GOSS, John SHEARMAN, and ANDERSON connection to the GOSS family." 1. Pension Record - Rev War pensioners and widows
    2. To do it yourself research for Revolutionary War pension files: If you are near a large genealogical library or a University library, first try to determine whether they have a set of books edited by Virgil D. White. The name of the set of books is something like this: Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pensions..... There are four hefty volumes, with the last volume being the all-name index to the first three volumes. This essentially is an index to all of the names occuring in the films held by the National Archives on the subject listed. White will not give you the film number but his abstracts (listed alphabetically by surname) will give you some good genealogical information about the service man, his widow if applicable, his heirs if applicable, and goodness knows what else. Furthermore, it will give you the number of the pension or the widow's pension. (And White has also indexed other pension claims from other wars--he is important to genealogists.) Also, with luck, a University library near you (or some such LARGE library) may have the microfilms of the actual pension papers. Click around on some online catalogs of libraries near you. I believe the National Archives number for the pension records (Rev War) are numbered M-804. There are close to 3,000 reels of film, so most libraries do not have these films. The films are available on loan through your local FHCenter (if there is one near you) from Salt Lake City. Otherwise, you have to order the copies of the film from Washington DC--for about $37 (the last time I looked). In order to order the film from Salt Lake City, however, you have to know the number of the Salt Lake film. And that is a handicap. By clicking around the www.familysearch.org and searching the catalog, I finally stumbled upon where these films are cataloged. Veteran's Administration Go down the long list of topics until you find Revolutionary War ..... Click on that, and then you will find the films are listed alphabetically by surname. You want the film for your specific person, so don't do this search in a hurry! Revolutionary war pension and bounty-land-warrant application files Although the topi states there are bounty-land-warrant applications, when I ordered a hefty file from the National Archives (before the price rose so high), the bounty-land-warrant application was NOT included. I believe you have to request that separately. Live and learn!!! E.W.Wallace
