    2. Caroline McCall
    3. Hi Carolyn... I'd try the NC State Library. The URL is: http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/iss/gr/genealog.htm. They have lots of the Granville Co. documents as well as books listing marriage bonds, etc. I don't know what their policy is on lookups, but you can find out from their website. Hope this helps. I have been given the following reference: William Claxton to Mary Ann Anderson, Granville County, NC Bond Date: 5 May 1772, Bond # 31551, Image # 3394 If any record of this marriage exists, it could make a tremendous difference in the genealogy of the Claxton family of Tennessee. 1. Boonesborough and Some of the Early Families in Madison Co., KY
    2. Although nothing on the internet can replace documentation obtained from primary sources (records created at the time of the event), if one wants to know more about Boonesborough, the internet is a good place to begin your education--and searches. Do a google.com search for *boonesborough* A number of hits will come up, and an exploration of each link will give you additional information, it seems, including a map of the area. I began my education about Boonesborough by studying whatever I could find about Col. Richard Henderson. This included searching mostly North Carolina records. My direct ancestor, whose only surviving son migrated later to Henderson Co., KY, was William Williams. He died on or about Christmas day 1775 at Boonesborough. Fortunately, there is an unrecorded will made at Boonesborough among the records of Granville Co., NC. Among the witnesses to the will was John Floyd. But, William Williams, brother of Col. [sometimes called that by Henderson] John Williams, was only one of my ancestors who migrated to and from Boonesborough. Others: Michael Stoner, George Boone [probable], Jesse Oldham of Caswell Co., NC. Good luck with the surname Miller!!! Perhaps William Harris Miller's works on many early families [interrelated, of course] of Madison Co., KY will give you a head start. Here is the full title of his hefty book. It has been filmed by Family History Library and probably can be ordered [for a fee] to your local LDS family history center. It will take you a long time to plow through it. A diligent search may turn up a hard copy in your vicinity. History and genealogies of the families of Miller, Woods, Harris, Wallace, Maupin, Oldham, Kavanaugh and Brown : with interspersions of notes of the families of Dadney [should be Dabney], Reid, Martin, Broaddus, Gentry, Jarman, Jameson, Ballard, Mullins, Michie, Moberley, Covington, Browning, Duncan, Yancey and others Use with caution. Check against original records, particularly the deeds/probates of Madison Co., KY and for the Oldhams, against the records of Caswell Co., NC. Miller has mixed up a group of Jefferson Co., KY Oldhams with those of Madison Co., KY--they having different migration routes to Kentucky. Probably related in Virginia, but difficult to prove!!! Hope this helps. Hint: I find the deeds of Madison Co., KY help me straighten out some of the family connections. The Commissioners deeds, seemingly of later date, are very helpful in discovering family relationships. (Look in both the grantor and grantee indexes, nicely typed, thank you very much, for the listing under C for Commissioner.) E.W.Wallace

    1. Samuel F. Williams (1759 Granville Co., NC-d. ca 1835 Henderson Co., KY)
    2. Samuel F. Williams filed a Revolutionary War pension claim in Henderson Co., KY in the 1850s. It was rejected because he had not served six months in the Revolutionary army or militia. Besides, when the statements he gave about those with whom he served, etc. were compared with the actual facts, he seems to have stretched the truth somewhat!!! In the same claim, Williams stated he came to Henderson Co., KY ca 1806, and that seems to coincide with records concerning his activities in Henderson Co., KY and with the public records in Granville Co. NC. He was the son of William Williams (d. testate Dec 1770 at Boonesborough, now Madison Co., KY), a nephew of John Williams, Esq., long a judge in both Granville Co., NC and in the State of North Carolina, and a first cousin once removed of Col. Richard Henderson of Granville Co., NC. Samuel F. was the father of at least eight children and perhaps nine children, one of them being Samuel S. Williams [called Samuel Williams, Jr. in the 1820 census], who was later of Hickman Co., KY (deeds, court records, administration). Some of Samuel F.'s other sons were Alfred, John, William, and Dudley. The first three of these can be found in records of Henderson Co., but Dudley Williams appears, it seems, on only one Henderson Co. tax list. It is believed William's' daughter Nancy Williams was the first wife of George Negley and mother of a number of his children. This is one of the many records of Samuel Farrar Williams of Granville Co., NC. His mother was Phillis, whom some believe was nee Beckham. Phillis later married John Mitchell in Granville co., and she was named in Mitchell's will. In Henderson Co., KY, Williams married 2nd ca 1814 the widow of his neighbor of Lot 23--David Stephens. His 2nd wife was Elizabeth Stephens--and he became stepfather to her approximately eight children, according to court records. Samuel S. Williams, believed to be his son, married his stepsister, Catherine Stephens, in 1817, in Henderson Co., KY. Samuel S. Williams died intestate ca 1838, Hickman Co., KY, and Jesse H. Williams, later of Ballard Co., KY, was administrator. Here is one of the many Granville Co., NC records pertaining to Williams: GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA November 25th 1796 Agreeable to an order hereunto … directed to Elijah Mitchell Thomas Satterwhite esq James Vaughan Henry Lyne & William Byars or any three of them to settle with the Executors of William Williams decd there accts with said esate Estate & Report. 1. LLOYD's from Granville County
    2. I am looking for information on the Lloyd (Loyd) family from (I believe) the southern part of Granville County. My g-grandfather Athinson Leonidas Lloyd married Lucy Powell from the northern part of Wake County in 1894. They moved to St. Louis. We think his father was W.H. (Henry?) Lloyd. Do you have ideas for me? All the best, Gary Turner

    1. DUTTON, PARRISH, O'BRIANT, BAILEY
    2. Joseph T. Richardson
    3. I am seeking information on the family of Zachariah DUTTON, who came to Granville County in about 1795 from Charles County, Maryland. His will is dated 10 Nov 1828, and was probated in Granville County in Aug 1829. Zachariah's first wife died ca. 1797-98, and he remarried 23 Nov 1798 to Mrs. Judith PARRISH, the widow of Claiborne PARRISH. I think her maiden name was also PARRISH. There were apparently no children by this marriage. Three of Zachariah's children were also married in Granville County: John DUTTON was married 14 Jan 1806 to Omah PARRISH; Elizabeth Dutton was married 27 Apr 1817 to William BAILEY; and Stephen Dutton was married 23 Sep 1818 to Sarah O'BRIANT. John and Omah DUTTON and Stephen and Sarah DUTTON all moved to Alabama. I know nothing at all of William and Elizabeth BAILEY. If anybody has any information on this family, I would be deeply in your debt. Also, I know there are some PARRISH researchers on this list. I would like to know how Judith PARRISH and Omah PARRISH tie into the other PARRISH families in Granville County. Who were their parents? Who was Claiborne PARRISH, Judith's first husband, and who were his parents? Who were the children by their marriage? When did Judith die? If it will help any in her identification, Omah (PARRISH) DUTTON was born ca. 1790 in North Carolina. Several O'BRIANT researchers have tried to help me with Sarah (O'BRIANT) DUTTON, but so far she hasn't seemed to fit into anyone's trees. She was born ca. 1802 in North Carolina. If anyone has any ideas about her, I would appreciate them. Zachariah DUTTON's daughter Matilda was unmarried and still living in Granville County in 1830. Are there any further records of her? Finally, if memory serves, Zachariah DUTTON had land on the banks of Grassy Creek. Does anybody have any idea where his land might have been located, or where he might be buried? Thanks. Joseph T. Richardson

    2. CAPTAIN BENJAMIN J. 1. All Genealogist and Researchers- Save Our Access to Birth Records
    2. Deloris Williams
    3. This was in Today's Ancestry Daily News which I felt was of importance to everyone doing research. I would urge everyone to contact their Congressman immediately to stop this bill from restricting our access to these vital documents. Feel free to pass this along to anyone else interested in this. Deloris Williams Immediate Action Requested Legislation in Congress Seeks to Restrict Access to Birth Records; FGS Recommends Writing to Your Congressional Representatives The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill, House Resolution 10 (H.R. 10), which seeks to restrict access to birth certificates. This bill, which purpose is to respond to the threat of terrorism, is on a fast track to passage and has been voted on by several committees already. Your help is needed now. David Rencher, Chairman of the Record Access and Preservation Committee, a joint committee of the National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies, has sent a letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman Dennis Hastert, recommending an amendment to the bill as follows: "However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates, or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record." A copy of the letter is available on the FGS site at www.fgs.org/rpa/formalactions.htm. To view this bill, go to http://thomas.loc.gov. Enter HR 10 in the search box for "Bill Number." Action Is Needed Now Because this bill is moving toward passage so quickly, it is urged that the genealogical community take action immediately and let their representatives know that they are in support of David Rencher's amendment and the FGS position in this important matter. To find your state representative's contact information, go to www.house.gov/writerep/. How Should I Word My Letter? While you should word the letter in any way that is comfortable for you, it is recommended that you include the following as a portion of the letter: "While I support the intention to increase security to protect the U.S. from terrorists and those who wish to improperly take U.S. identities, I am concerned that those researching their family's history continue to have access to non-certified birth records. Therefore, in order to support HR-10 I ask that you amend HR-10 Section 3063(d)(2) by adding the following wording to the existing paragraph: 'However, nothing in this Chapter 2 shall be construed to require a State to change its law with respect to public access to (A) non-certified copies of birth certificates or to (B) birth certificates or birth records once a period of 100 years has elapsed from the date of creation of the certificate or record.' I believe that this additional language is imperative so that the states do not react by restricting all certificates to comply with the law, rather than dealing with certified as opposed to non-certified birth certificates. This proposed amendatory language would remind them that they can and should be treated differently." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. Which Williams was Spouse of Sarah Rose of Tar River Area ca 1768?
    2. I would like some help in trying to distinguish which Williams may have been the husband of Sarah Rose, who was married before 1768. If you know of any of these persons mentioned in these abstracts, please e-mail me. Thanks. E.W.Wallace Descendant of William Rose through his son Frederick Rose, who went to Georgia after the Revolution.. SARAH ROSE. (Living and married in 1768). Is Sarah Rose, daughter of William Rose of Tar River area, the wife of Stephen Williams OR of John Williams of early Granville Co., NC? (Her father's abstracted will is at the end of this message) This Williams family is NOT to be confused with the more prominent Williams family of the area around Nutbush Creek [now Kerr Lake] of northern Granville Co. who interestingly enough had a Charles Williams also. Sarah Williams was named in the will of her father, William Rose of Granville Co., written early 1768. Based on tentative research, we believe her spouse may have been Stephen Williams of Tar River. If Stephen was her spouse, then his father was William Williams of the Tar River area, whose will was proved Feb 1765, Granville co., NC. Unrecorded wills, 1746-27 "66 - Apr 3, 1763 - proved Feb 1765- William Williams wills to son Charles Williams 250 acres of land on south side of Tarr river, also my part of the wagon and two horses belonging to the wagon, a feather bed and furniture; to son Stephen Williams, plantation whereon I now live containing 143 acres on north side of Tarr river and a feather bed and furniture, a horse and my saddle; to daughter Lucy Pitman, wife of Samuell Pitman, 5 shillings; my wife Elizabeth to have use of plantation and dwelling house whereon I now live for as long as she is my widow or for life and at her death, the land go to the aforesaid Stephen Williams; the movable property divided between Charles and Stephen Williams. Exrs: my son Charles Williams and friend Francis Fowler. Wts: John Williams, John Morris. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1808 [Rocky Mount, NC: Joseph W. Watson, 1973], p. 27) Or, was Sarah's spouse John Williams? (p. 21 of Gwynn's COURT MINUTES OF GRANVILLE CO.) This is the abstracted will of William Rose of Knap or Nap of Reeds area of Granville Co., NC: Granville Co. NC unrecorded will-page 54. [Written] Dec 1, 1768 - proved Jan. court 1769- William Rose wills to son Frederick Rose 300 acres on Reeds creek, 6 head of cattle, and 3 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to my son William Rose, my lower tract on Nap of Reeds creek known as "Elwoods," 6 cattle, 4 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to son Howel Rose, all land whereon I now live after his mother's death, she to live and use it for her lifetime; to daughter Sarah Williams, 10 pds; to daughter Elizabeth Rose, 40 pds. when she is 21 years old or married; to daughter Winneyfred Rose, a negro woman, 5 cattle now at Robert Sorriels when she is 21 years old or married; to my wife Amy Rose, 2 negroes, household furniture, livestock, for her lifetime and, at her death, to be sold and money to my son Howel Rose, with exception of setting up Frederick and William with enough of pewter, tools, etc., etc. Exrs: wife Ame Rose, brother-in-law James Langston. Wts: James Langston, James Willis, Jean Langston. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1808 [Rocky Mount, NC: Joseph W. Watson, 1973], p. 22) As noted, a number of these heirs were not yet 21 years of age, including Frederick. The widow was the former Amy Langston, and she married twice subsequent to Rose's death. (These Roses were associated with Merritt, Langston, and others of that general area of colonial Granville Co., NC.) Please forward this message to other rootsweb groups who you think might be interested. EWW

    1. One of the Williams Families of Early Granville Co., NC
    2. My research of two groups of families named Williams in early Granvile Co., NC--one clustered around Nutbush Creek, now part of Kerr Lake, it seems, and another clustered around Knap of Reeds, Tar River area--reveals that there were two rather distinct Williams families. My research is by no means exhaustive. However, since one of my ancestors in the Knap of Reeds area (colonial era) was a Baptist minister, William Washington, I venture to say that associated families in that area--Rose, Langston, Merritt, Williams, et al--were also Baptists. On the other hand those clustered around Nutbush creek seemed without any specific religion, although later generations were associated with Rev. Henry Pattillo, whom I understand was Presbyterian. Also, at Williamsboro or Williamsborough, there was/is an Anglican church called St. John's. The neighbors of these Williams families were Henderson, Bullock, Sneed, et al. I suspect information may be found about the first group in a publication such as this, held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I have not explored this publication, so forgive me if I am wrong. Title The Williams family of Granville County, North Carolina and Marshall County, Tennessee : ancestors -- descendants -- connections to the Allison, Boyd, Camden, Haislip, Harris, Ogilvie and Peace families Authors _Schack, Elizabeth Thompson_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=authordetails&authorno=223548&name=Schack,+Elizabet h+Thompson) (Main Author) Note Location Film Also on microfiche. Salt Lake City : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 2003. 4 fiches FHL US/CAN Fiche 6006758 Please note that this book has been filmed and is on four microfiche with the number given above. Each microfiche, when ordered through your nearby LDS family history center, costs 15 cents apiece. This gives a total of 60 cents for the four microfiche. Can you afford that amount to sort out these Williamses. Had I enough time, I would delve into this. If you go to the familysearch.org website, click on the link to the catalog (on the lower right of the screen) and do an author search (name given above), you will find more details about this publication. I hope this information helps persons researching Williams families in colonial Granville co., NC. One has to be quite careful in sorting them out. If you are researching one Samuel Farrar Williams (b. ca 1759 Granville Co., NC-d. ca 1835 Henderson Co., KY), contact me. He was the only surviving son of William Williams who died testate at Boonesborough [then Virginia, now Kentucky] on or about 25 Dec 1775. He was a nephew of the more famous Judge John Williams, aka John Williams, Esq. aka John Williams, Jr. of Granville Co., NC. (My grandfather's line) Oh, yes, I am also a descendant of Daniel Williams, who died testate ca 1759 in Granville Co., NC. His son, Henry Williams of Caswell Co., NC, is my ancestor. (My grandmother's line.) Daniel Williams was the uncle of the above-named John Williams, Esq. E.W.Wallace .

    1. Harrises of Granville Co., NC
    2. Dear Ira and others interested in Harrises of Early Granville Co., NC First, thank you for giving us the URL for the early tax lists of Granville Co., NC. Some of these lists were published long ago, if memory serves, in an issue of the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal (an excellent journal for North Carolina researchers). Second, I do not connect (at least immediately) any of these Harrises with the descendants of William Harris and his wife Temperance Overton of the Pamunkey area Hanover Co. VA Many of these descendants are found later in Louisa and Albemarle Cos. and probably in adjoining counties, such as Amherst. Just a thought for MORE homework for Harris Hunters of Granville Co. I believe there are extant maps of the watercourses in old Granville Co., NC. They may have to be augmented by maps of Vance Co. and Warren Co. These may be held by North Carolina State archives, or perhaps a historical or genealogical society in Granville Co., NC. Why do you need a map of the watercourses? According to some brief lessons I had at the instruction of a DAR genealogist some years ago: 1) Sort out colonial families by the watercourse on which they lived (Granville co. deeds and in some csses the Granville District grants give this info--more homework!!!) 2) Determine who their associates were. Who was the bondsman at the marriage? Who witnessed their deeds and other documents? Who were their neighbors? Deeds and marriage records and court records may help here. Refer to Gwynns or Rackley's books. In my case, I was trying to help a DAR applicant sort out two men by the same unusual name--who lived in adjoining counties in North Carolina (but not Granville Co.). Which one was linked to the applicant? That is when I was given the above instructions. Fortunately for me, we had a previous application on that patriot, and the names of the children of the patriot and their spouses [good clue] were available. I began to research those surnames, particularly of the daughters' spouses, and this helped me immensely in establishing the correct identity. Granville Co. is fortunate to have so many surviving records. The old books by Zae Hargett Gwynn were of immense help to me, and the newer ones (deeds and wills) by Timothy Rackley are even more detailed. Brent H. Holcomb transcribed the marriage bonds and Geneal. Publ. Co. published them several years ago. There are some errors, of course, but since the book is indexed, this shortens your task a good deal. Also, if I remember correctly, the Family History Library has films of the devisor and devisee indexes (listed under probate records), and, even without reading the estate papers, one can generally figure out family relationships. I am told that more and more records of Surry Co., VA (some of my ancestors in Granville Co. came from there, but probably by way of Chatham Co., NC) are being transcribed--and discovered. So--I have not solved your problem.
