    1. Some Wills naming some Early Williamses
    2. In some of my endless searches for colonial North Carolinians, I have tripped over the names of these vavious Williamses. Interestingly the names Parmaneus and Ashkenaz Williams turn up later in far western Kentucky. These men seem NOT to be linked to other Williams males of the general Nutbush Creek area of Granville Co., NC (near Virginia line) nor to another Williams family in the Knap of Reeds (Tar River area) of southern Granville Co. This information was gleaned from Mary Hinton Kerr, WARREN COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA RECORDS, V. Furthermore, if you believe these are your people, I highly recommend that you borrow microfil of land and courr records from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City through a nearby LDS Family History Center. A list of over 3,500 centers around the world can be found on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) These centers are quite prevalent in the west, and there are a few in Virginia. They are run by volunteers and do not generally have long hours. Therefore, telephone before you plan a trip. 1. Re: [NCGRANVI] Online -- Sketches of NC by Foote 1846
    2. Hello All, I'll just point out that Foote's book is online in its entirety (searchable with browser's find feature) at the University of North Carolina's outstanding site with numerous old books online, which I recommend to you all: http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/foote/foote.html Sadly, it isn't, however, indexed -- which certainly gives the CD a big plus. 3. Hi... I saw that some people have responded - some with success; some, with problems. I'm among the lucky ones who got through without a hitch. I have DrWatson as part of my Windows XP. It's in my Windows/System32 subdirectory. You may not need to download it. I think it also came with Win 98, but I don't remember where it "lived" in 98. Hope you get it resolved. And, thank you for the great link! I haven't had time to study it, but I did pull up a couple of counties where my ancestors lived - Lunenburg and Amelia Cos. - and scanned through them. Thanks... Of course, to read the documents you need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader: http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/historic_roads.htm However, I had earlier found a different way in, through the top so to speak. Along with a list of the road orders available, below are those instructions that I had posted earlier on some Virginia lists. I just re-checked it. Since I have downloaded them all, I haven't been back! Good Luck! Janet Hunter ..... More The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is in the process of publishing early road orders from court records for many Virginia counties. These are available for download online at the website below. You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to read these PDF documents. It is available free here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html To access the Road Orders availalble (list at end), follow these instructions. Go to: http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/index_main.htm Using the links on the left, click on Publications. Click on this new screen at the bottom of the lefthand column: VTRC's historic road documents are now available online. You will find the following (links at end): The establishment and maintenance of public roads were among the most important functions of the county court during the colonial period in Virginia. Each road was opened and maintained by an overseer (or surveyor) of the highways, who was appointed each year by the Gentlemen Justices. The overseer was usually assigned all the able-bodied men (the "Labouring Male Tithables") living on or near the road. These laborers then furnished their own tools, wagons, and teams and were required to work on the roads for six days each year. County court records relating to roads and transportation are collectively known as "road orders." The Virginia Transportation Research Council's published volumes of road orders and related materials contain not only information on early roads, but also the names of inhabitants who lived and worked along the roadways, plantations, farms, landmarks, landforms, and bodies of water. Much of this information is found nowhere else in early records, making these publications invaluable not only to historical and cultural resource research, but also to other disciplines, including social history, preservation planning, environmental science, and genealogy. (_http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/historic_roads.htm_ (http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/historic_roads.htm) ) The men (and women) who are mentioned in these early road orders frequently removed to North Carolina, or their descendants did. (Interestingly, the one road order book I read for Goochland Co. indicated women, at various times, operated a ferry.) There is generally an index at the end of each booklet. E.W.Wallace

    1. Joseph Williams & Sally Searcy of Madison Co., KY, former NC residents
    2. Dear Subscribers: Joseph Williams in this brief bio (I have more) is almost certain to be the son of Henry Williams (d...... testate Caswell Co., NC) as proved by earlier deeds in Caswell Co. which indicate Joseph Williams is of Madison Co., KY. Here are some abstracted deeds, recorded in Madison Co., KY, of Joseph Williams, grantee, and Tyre Oldham and his wife Nancy, and later between Joseph Williams, grantee, and James French and Kezia his wife. Joseph Williams married Sally Searcy, daughter of Bartlett Searcy (decd) and his wife, said to be Lucy Williams. I have not been able to confirm that Lucy Searcy, originally of Granville Co., NC was indeed a Williams. Can anyone shed further light on Joseph Williams and his mother-in-law, Lucy Searcy? Or on Tyree Harris and his wife Nancy. Does anyone know when Joseph Williams died--and where? Hint: Joseph Williams is a younger brother of Ursala Duke Williams, the widow Peoples, who married Richard *Ready-Money* Oldham in Caswell Co., NC. R/M and Ursala migrated to Madison Co., KY soon after their marriage. After Ursala or Ursley's death after the birth of a fifth child, R/M Oldham married Patsy Reid, daughter of Alexander Reid, an early settler of Kentucky. Reid is believed to have also been of North Carolina. Furthermore, Tyree Oldham is said to be the brother of R/M Oldham, both of them sons of Jesse Oldham, an early explorer of Boonesborough, according to a clipping found in the Lyman C. Draper manuscripts. Submitted by E.W.Wallace descendant of R/M Oldham and his first wife Ursley Duke Williams Peoples DB E-132 [abstracted] 28 Feb 1801 - Tyree Oldham to Joseph Williams both of Madison Co., KY - Tyree Oldham & his wife Nancy for and in consideration of 104 pds. - 52A between Tates Bottom Run & Kentucky River granted to Tyree Oldham by patent bearing the 18th day of May 1796...lines of William Irvine... ln. of Isaac Ware ... Wares Ln No 87... corner to Robert Clarke... ln of Richard Harrison Tyree Oldham [LS] Nancy Oldham [LS] Ackd by Tyree Harris & Nancy Oldham in Madison Co. court Monday the 2nd day of March 1801. Nancy examined privately. (SL film 183,286) DB F-21 [abstracted] 4 Nov 1805 James French and Kezia his wife of Montgomery Co. KY to Joseph Williams of Madison Co., KY... consideration 420 pds. ... 202 acres on waters of Otter Creek & Tates Bottom... being the place where the said Joseph Williams now lives... corner to Samuel South ... Tates Bottom Run... Richard Harrison's preemption of 1000 .. thence with the line of Harrisons preemption... Harrisons line to his corner... branch of Stony Run.. ln of Wm.Smiths survey of 1000 acres... ln of William Irvine & James French... Charles Caffery.. ln of Irvine & French West... ln of Samuel South James French Keziah French I Joseph Williams do hereby declare that the foregoing deed from James French & Keziah his wife is in full discharge of said French's bond to me for the land on which I now live & provided I should find said Bond which is either lost or mislaid. I am to deliver said Bond to said French as witness my hand & seal this 5th day of November 1805. Joseph Williams [LS] (SL film 183,287) This highly abstracted deed is also believed to pertain to Joseph Williams. DB F-706 [abstracted] Woods to Williams, 12 Sept 1808 William Woods & Ruth Woods of Madison Co. KY of same... consideration 1500 dollars ... 100 A. ... parcel of land lying on Hazel Patch Road and on the waters of Rockcastle William Woods [LS] Ruth Woods [LS] Are these brides the children of Jseph Williams and Sally Searcy? Since brides married quite young in this time period, it is conceivable Joseph Williams, son of Henry, is the father of the following brides: Barnett Eades & Elizabeth Williams - 17 Sep 1811 (bond); Joseph Williams, father of bride; Lewis Eades, bondsman. Lewis Pully & Lucy Williams - 15 May 1817; Joseph Wiliams, father of bride; Samuel Searcy, bondsman. Certainly the naming patterns of the brides--Elizabeth and Lucy-- and in the case of the second cited marriage, the association with a Searcy bondsman, would certainly suggest linkage with the extended Henry Williams-Bartlett Searcy family of Caswell Co. and Granville Co., North Carolina. Elizabeth Williams, wife of Henry3 Williams, was the mother of Joseph4 Williams. Lucy Searcy nee Williams (purported) would be the maternal grandmother of the bride. Joseph Williams and Sally Williams were witnesses to the will of James Harrison, 1806, Will Bk. A (Charles M. Franklin, Madison Co. KY WILLS & ESTATES 1785-1813) Possibly Joseph had died by 1825 as one Sally Williams, mother of the bride, has given consent to this Madison Co. marriage bond: James Mitchell & Sophia Williams, 29 Dec 1825 Wiley Searcy, bondsman; Sally Williams, mother of bride. 3. I appreciate your thoughts, Catherine. Thank you. One of the places that one can look at to get an idea of when the NC Counties were formed, is this USGenweb/Rootsweb site which includes all of the counties. I printed a copy for myself years before and I would suggest that others doing NC research do the same. And I would also suggest that folks don't forget to check out the County Websites at USGenweb/Rootsweb, too. New stuff is being added all of the time. Folks not familiar with the sites, her is the address: www.usgenweb.org and here is the link to the counties, which is worth keeping a copy of for easy reference of the dates of formation: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Encgenweb/county.html Deloris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Catherine O'Briant" <cherokeecatz@cox.net> To: <NCGRANVI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2005 7:04 AM Subject: [NCGRANVI] RE: Broader spectrum > > > Good Morning Deloris > > Thank you so very much for all your diligent effort, I'm very grateful. > > I was excited when you mention Randolph O'Briant and Prudence Dixon (my > 3rd > g-grandparents) I've yet to find out who were Prudence Dixon parents and > you've given me a path to follow. > > My email is open to you for any attachments to send <big smiles> > > I'm reading your input to Dorothy and find your advice extremely helpful > in > my case. > > The more involved I become in genealogy, with great interest I find myself > needing to open my mind up to broader spectrums besides Granville and > Person > Co. where the majority of my ancestors are found. > > It wasn't until a few months ago the light bulb click to seriously look > into > Edgecombe and Richmond Counties <sigh> now that you mention it (excellent > advice) I'll be more aware of furthering my options even more. > > Even though I've been actively involved in genealogy for the last 10 years > I > still consider myself a new bee and still learning as opposed to > researchers > that have 40 plus years experience under their belt. > > Living in Virginia I find from my trips at the Richmond State Archives > several NC, KY, TN, etc. residences from the earlier years (1600 to 1800) > that are now indicated in more present time lines. > > At my local Roanoke library the NC books are limited but with luck and > surprise I found the 1st and 2nd volume of the Person Co., book, a > Granville > Court Record book and a few other miscellaneous ones. > > The additional counties that you have mentioned are very beneficial to me > and I will certainly follow through. > > Catherine

    3. Good Morning Deloris Thank you so very much for all your diligent effort, I'm very grateful. I was excited when you mention Randolph O'Briant and Prudence Dixon (my 3rd g-grandparents) I've yet to find out who were Prudence Dixon parents and you've given me a path to follow. My email is open to you for any attachments to send <big smiles> I'm reading your input to Dorothy and find your advice extremely helpful in my case. The more involved I become in genealogy, with great interest I find myself needing to open my mind up to broader spectrums besides Granville and Person Co. where the majority of my ancestors are found. It wasn't until a few months ago the light bulb click to seriously look into Edgecombe and Richmond Counties <sigh> now that you mention it (excellent advice) I'll be more aware of furthering my options even more. Even though I've been actively involved in genealogy for the last 10 years I still consider myself a new bee and still learning as opposed to researchers that have 40 plus years experience under their belt. Living in Virginia I find from my trips at the Richmond State Archives several NC, KY, TN, etc. residences from the earlier years (1600 to 1800) that are now indicated in more present time lines. At my local Roanoke library the NC books are limited but with luck and surprise I found the 1st and 2nd volume of the Person Co., book, a Granville Court Record book and a few other miscellaneous ones. The additional counties that you have mentioned are very beneficial to me and I will certainly follow through. There are several different books that have deed & will information for these counties, however, most of them are out of print. I bought the Person County book several years ago and a couple of Granville County Abstract books about the same time while I was researching my ancestors. I guess the Granville County info I quoted in my message on the O'Briants happened to contain exchanges with Person County folks. Many of the people from Person were originally in Granville, and before that Edgecombe County, mostly due to the formation of the North Carolina Counties over the years. I always find its a good idea to research the names one is looking for in all of the surrounding NC counties because most of them started out as just 1 or 2 large counties for the area, and split up over the years to form new counties. So doing research for the Person County area, for instance, one has to consider also researching ancestors in Caswell, Orange, Granville,Johnston, & Bladen, as well as Edgecombe, Bertie & Chowan, all depending on what years you are looking for. It's a good idea to keep a listing of the NC counties handing that shows when & where they were formed from.

    1. O'Brian(t) of Granville and Person Counties
    2. Catherine O'Briant
    3. Could I please have a look up in the Granville/Person areas for my earliest known ancestors... I'm hoping that any details concerning Patrick O'Brian(t) might help me in this quest. (Variant spellings found for O'Brien) birth, or parents, etc. Patrick O'Brian(t) b. abt 1740 - d. 1804 Granville Co., NC. He had been married more than once. Married 1794 to the "widow" Elizabeth Stroud, (previously married to David Stroud) Earliest records so far found of Patrick in Granville Co., NC... 1769 Tax list, Patrick O'Brian 1772 Land Deed in Goshen Dist., Patrick O'Brian 1790 Census Granville Co., Patrick O'Brian 1880 Census Granville Co., Patrick O'Briant I'm currently following a lead and awaiting documents from Edgecombe Co., NC referencing... if I understand the time line this part of Edgecombe is now a part of Granville Co., NC. Geraldus O'Bryan b. abt 1742 in Limerick, Ireland (I believe County Cork) - d. 1764 Edgecombe Co., NC, buried: "same" married to Elizabeth Toole b. abt 1744 - d. abt 1811 Edgecombe Co., NC., d/o Lawrence Toole, Sr and Sabra Irvine/Irwin The coincidences between these two lineages these two men are so strong I can't somehow not believe they may possible be brothers or otherwise. The same time frame, places they been found, their children, the names... I've spoken to a few of my elders and the same similar folklore has been told to the families down through the years...that 2 brothers (Patrick and Dennis) come to America to escape the hardships of the time in Ireland, so forth and so on. With the help of several researchers and my O'Briant family I've been fortunate to collect volumes of genealogy referencing a great deal of Patrick's children on down. It's Patrick that has been my weakest link. Patrick O'Brian(t) eldest son.. Dennis b. 1760 Granville Co., NC - d. Feb 1817 Person Co., NC Served in the Rev War but I don't know the specifics. 1790 Census Granville Co., Dennis O'Bryan 1800 Census Granville Co., Dennis O'Briant 1810 Census Granville Co., Dennis O'Bryan Married Aug 05, 1806 Granville Co., NC to Rebecca Harris verified in her husband's (Dennis O'Briant) Will and her father's (John Harris, Sr.) Will. She is also specified in Court Records found dated 1819 in the inventory and sale of the estate of her father John Harris, Sr. Geraldus O'Bryan is mentioned in the Will of his wife's father Lawrence/Laurence Toole as executor. He is also mentioned as Dennis Geraldus O'Bryan, Sr in a book written by Mary Polk Branch based on dairy records and other research done within this family lineage. Geraldus's eldest son was also named... Dennis (Edgecombe County, North Carolina Vital Records, 1720-1880) b. abt 1757 Edgecombe Co., NC, married to Frances maiden name unknown at this time. Two children verified, Anne O'Bryan and Dennis Geraldus O'Briant, Jr. After Dennis death in 1789 Edgecombe Co., NC, his widow later married John Murray. I can easily go further with much research referencing these two lineages but that would take pages. I don't know if I'm signed up on the mailing list for (NCPERSON-L) rootsweb, it's not listed in my email book. Should I re-subscribe? My apologizes in advance for my ramblings. Thank you, Catherine
