    3. Daniela, I have a lot of deed and will books for early Edgecombe Co., as well as "History and Genealogies of Old Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1800", by Thomas McAdory Owen and there is no mention of a Providence Carter. I did find one reference to Thomas Bivens in the Granville book though as follows: Orphans in the County, Pg. 191 - #33. March 9, 1758. Thomas BEVIN, ag'd 13 Jany 1, 1758, bound to Jas. DOWNEY to learn to be "planter" & to be given 1 yrs schooling. I looked for other entries in the book with James DOWNEY, and only found 2 other listings. One was: Abstracts of Wills -Pg. 38,39 - GEORGE BRASFIELD. Will, dat. Jun 21, 1771, prob. ___Ct. 1771. To wife Elizabeth his whole est., real and personal during her widowhood, on her complying with the particulars hereafter named; and (2) to eldest daut. Abigail MALONE, second daut. Elizabeth KNOTT, third daut. Fanny BOND, Caleb BRASFIELD, Nancy BRASFIELD, Judith BRASFIELD, George BRASFIELD, Milley BRASFIELD, and Pattey BRASFIELD, an equal part of his negroes and his personal est. at and not before wifes' decease unless his exs. are of opinion a div. can be made without injury to the young children. Exs: wife, Messrs. LEWIS & LEWIS, and James DOWNEY. Wit: Sam'l HOPKINS, James DOWNEY, Robert MALONE. Id. p. 218., Inv . ret. to Feby. Ct. 1772; among other items: "A number of Books", and 5 negroes. Id. P.222. Assessors - Pg. 165 - June 22, 1782. James DOWNEY, Robert HARRIS, John PEACE Jr., John WILLIAMS, Daniel Thomas OWEN, & Jonathan KNIGHT added to the list above for present year. 3. Dear Granville County researchers, Does anyone know anything about a Providence Carter who owned land in the area of Granville County before 1780? I am researching Thomas Bivans or Bevins, heir of Providence Carter, who appeared in the Orange County area in the mid-1700s. Thomas Bevans and William Smith appear on an Orange County 1789 deed for land owned by Providence Carter then deceased. Since Orange was formed out of Granville I would like to know if anyone knows something about this Carter family. Thank you, Daniela

    1. Alexander Smith - Granville Co. 1808-1902
    2. Caroline McCall
    3. I'm looking for descendants of Alexander Smith and Elizabeth Mitchell in Granville Co. Their children (as listed on the 1860 census in the Ledge of Rock District) were Castrine, Joseph L., Martha (mar. a Stroud), Charles, Nancy and James E. Alexander wrote his will in 1900, and it was proved (after his death) on 11-14-1902. Since Elizabeth wasn't mentioned in his will, I assume she died prior to 1900.

    1. "Uncle Nathaniel Williams"
    2. Dear Lena, You wrote Yes, Nathaniel & Joseph are brothers & are sons to my Uncle Nathaniel & his unknown wife. Uncle Nathaniel was born to John & Mary KEELING Williams of Wales to Hanover County, VA. Sincerely, Lena Thank you for your response, Lena to my query about some Williams males--Joseph and Nathaniel, deputy sheriffs in colonial Charlotte Co., VA. Do you have any documentation [citations] about *Uncle Nathaniel Williams*? I have been chasing this man for many a moon. I can one instance of him and his father John Williams witnessing a deed in Hanover Co. in the 1730s. After that, he becomes *unknown*, except for one reference to him in a Louisa Co., VA land record. I can document, mainly through land and court records, three of Nathaniel's brothers 1. John, Jr. [wife Mary Womack] who died in Granville Co., NC prior to Jan 1770 2. Daniel Williams who died testate 1759 in Granville Co., NC [wife Ursley with a lot of made-up maiden names, none of which can be proved] 3.Joseph Williams [of Lunenburg Co., VA, later of Elbert Co., GA, where he died testate] [first wife Henrietta Jouett]. I have to correct the parentage of *Uncle Nathaniel Williams* as you cite it. His father was John Williams, Sr., formerly of colonial Henrico Co., later of colonial Goochland Co., NC, and lastly, Hanover Co., NC. John Williams, according to the few remaining Hanover Co. records of that time, died intestate in the 1730s. The name of John Williams, Sr.'s wife was Mary, but her maiden name is really unknown. Everyone wants to call Mrs. John Williams, Sr. Mary *Keeling* but as far as I have been able to determine through many years of research (and an old letter written by a Williams great-grandson to a cousin), she was only known as Mary [no maiden name except in flawed genealogies and county histories]. The Keelings, as far as my research shows, were office holders in colonial Virginia and thus must have been members of the Anglican church. John Williams Sr., who died intestate ca 1735 in Hanover Co. was probably just a *planter*, meaning farmer. I find no record of his ever having held office. He may have been a keeper of an ordinary, as was his son in Goochland Co., but I can find no proof of that occupation--only a hunch, which I so label. John Sr.'s son John, Jr. [later called Sr. in Granville Co., NC where he migrated] was married to Mary Womack, as indicated by the will of her father, William Womack, will recorded in colonial Goochland Co. As you must know, except for a few court records and the land patents of Virginia, there are few remaining records of colonial Hanover Co. Therefore, it is most difficult to *prove* anything. The maiden name for Mary, the senior Mrs. John Williams, is, as far as I am concerned, a made-up name. Several dozen genealogical lecturers garner great fees for lecturing on finding your women ancestors--because so many of them are nameless. If that is good enough for professional genealogists, it is good enough for me--Mrs. no maiden name Williams. However, back to my question: Can you give me a citation indicating that the younger Nathaniel and Joseph Williams are the sons of *uncle Nathaniel Williams*. I will be most appreciative. And do you have any citations for their being in Charlotte Co., VA prior to removing to North Carolina.? I would be most appreciative. Many of the records of the Williams family of colonial Southern Virginia and later of North Carolina are botched and are based on hearsay--and copying others' flawed work. E.W.Wallace maiden name: Williams

    1. Champion Creek ? Census Districts?
    2. Caroline McCall
    3. I've run across Champion Creek in an old deed and don't know where it is. I've checked GNIS and can't find it. Anyone know where it is/used to be? I grew up in Oxford, so I'm pretty familiar with the area but not this particular creek. Also, does anyone know of a website or a book that outlines the old census districts (in the 1800's)? I know they frequently changed the lines. Thanks so much to anyone who can help with either of these questions. Caroline

    1. Re: [NCGRANVI] Samuel Hogg of Granville Co. NC and of Wilson Co., TN
    2. Deloris Williams
    3. Evelyn, I have a copy of Samuel Hogg's Revolutionary War Pension file, which was awarded for Smith County, Tennessee, but the application says he was a citizen of Wilson County, West Tennessee. It says he was a lieutenant in the Continental line, had entered and served under Capt. Claiborne Lawson' Company in the first Virginia Continental regiment commanded by Col. John Green, but he wasn't sure because the Colonel was frequently charged from one regiment to another; the Brigade was commanded by Genl. Peter Mughlenburg(?) and that he had entered on June 11, 1777, and served until the end of the War. He was captured at Charles Town on May 12, 1780, and released "on the ninth(?) of July 1781". He lost or misplaced his commission, but that he was promoted to a Captain, he was currently suffering from Rheumatism; signed as Capt. Saml. Hogg, July 10, 1818. A Major Howard Tatum of Davidson Co.,TN testified that he knew Samuel Hogg to have been in the service in the Revolutionary War. In Sept. 20, 1820, he said he was 64 years old and that all he owned was a horse, saddle and bridle worth $60, with debts to the amount of $50, that he had no family neither black nor white, no landed property, his occupation was as a Planter previous to his entering the Army and that he had lived in a Store; after the War he "entered occasionally in the Mercantile line". He also served in an expedition in the War, commanded by Patrick Henry and Col. Samuel Maredeth(?) in 1775; their mission was "to demand of Governor. Dunsmore(?) the restitution of the arms and amunition that he had taken from the magazine in Williamsburg, Virginia". The regiment he served in was called the Virginia Regt. under Capt. Henry Fleming's Company, commanded by Col. Patrick Henry, William Christie, Lt. Col.William Rosser(?) and Maj. Foot(?); he was when there when the Declaration of Independencewas read giving oath on July 4, 1776 at Williamsburg, Virginia, and was "at Norfolk when that town was burned". He goes on to mention that he spent the winter at Valley Ford (probably should have said Forge), was at the battle of Monmouth. He was also taken prisoner in 1780 at Hatteras Point, and remained a prisoner until an exchange was made, he was released at Old James Town where he remained until the end of the War, but then goes on to mention other battles he was in. I can email a copy directly to you, since we can't send it through the mailing list, and it will give you a chance to look through it yourself. 1. Samuel Hogg of Granville Co. NC and of Wilson Co., TN
    2. Dear Subscribers, I need some help in acquiring more identification of the subject man. Based on a transcribed Bible record [not the most reliable source], I believe he was the husband of one Sally or Sarah Williams, daughter of William Williams (d. Dec 1775 at Boonesborough) and his wife Phillis (some say Beckham) of Granville Co., NC. Sarah or Sally's only surviving brother was Samuel Farrar Williams (1759 Granville Co. NC- d. ca 1835 Henderson Co., KY). All evidence points to the fact that S.F.Williams is my ancestor. Is anyone on this rootsweb able to add additional information which you are willing to share concerning either Samuel Hogg (later of Wilson Co., TN) and his bride Sally or Sarah Williams? Here are some notes. I have a few more, but I don't want to bore you.: Preparer: E. W. Wallace, April 1998 Edited 6/99 Rev 8/2000 Rev 2/ 2004, Added to Oct 2004, rev. Mar 2005 SAMUEL HOGG. (ca 1760-aft 1820 TN?) husband of Sally Williams, who is said to have died in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. (Transcribed Sneed family Bible entry, said to have been at one time in the 1990s the hands of a person in Henderson Co., KY, a Mr. Soaper. The transcript was in the hands of Mrs. ...., San Diego, CA and the original was said to have been in Henderson Co. KY). The couple were married in 1792 in Granville Co. NC. We tend to believe that Sally Williams may have been a second or later wife of Samuel Hogg the elder. Samuel Hogg the elder is not to be confused with a younger Samuel Hogg, who seems to have been the elder's nephew and for whom the elder Samuel Hogg was guardian Granville Co., NC Deed Bk R-194 Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Hogg Senr. Executor of Thomas Hogg & Guardian of Saml Hogg Jr. of the County of Granville for & in consideration of the Sum of One hundred pounds Virga Money to me in hand paid by James Hamilton of the said County Merchant the Rect whereof I do hereby acknowledge have bargained sold & delivered & by these presents do bargain sell and deliver unto [said?] James Hamilton his Excrs, Admrs & assigns forever I said Samuel Hogg Senr as aforesd ... my Excrs & adms shall & will warrant & forever defend against all persons ... bargained premises [?] [said] James Hamilton his Exrs Admrs & assigns In witness whereof I do hereby set my hand & seal this 20th day of April 1803....... August Court A.D.1803 The within Bill of Sale was duly acknowledged in open Court by Samuel Hogg, esq and ordered to be Registered.............. Truly Reg by M. Satterwhite PR.... Teste Step Sneed Clk.. This information has to be researched in greater detail: 1835 pensions of TN SAMUEL HOGG SMITH COUNTY LIEUTENANT VIRGINIA CONT'L LINE $240.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $2,796.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED FEBRUARY 3, 1819 PENSION STARTED AGE 73 [if 73 in 1819, he was born 1746; if 73 in 1835, he was born 1762. This may be the groom of Sally Williams. Note Smith Co. residence, state unknown but probably Virginia] There was a younger Samuel Hogg, who, according to his biography in BIOGRAPHICAL DIRECTORY OF THE TENNESSEE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Edwards Hogg. The younger man (1783-1842) was a physician, and he seemed to be a young adult in the early 1800s. He had attended schools in Caswell Co., North Carolina. According to other information, cited below, the younger Samuel Hogg was a nephew of the older Samuel Hogg. Samuel Hogg married Sally (Sarah or Sary) Williams, most probably the daughter of the deceased William Williams (d. Dec 1775 at Boonesborough) and his wife Phillis [Beckham?]. As stated, this relationship deduction is based on the "Sneed family Bible," as found among the Bible transcriptions which gave a date of death for Sarah/Sallie Williams, later Hogg. Sally Williams's older sister Mary was married to Stephen Sneed of Granville Co. while her older brother (and only surviving brother) Samuel Farrar Williams was married 1st) to Hannah Sneed, sister of Stephen Sneed. Hence, information about the Williamses would be included in a Sneed Bible, the whereabouts of which is not currently known (2006). Granville Co. marriage record: Saml. Hogge & Sarah Williams, 14 May 1792; W. Norwood, bm; Saml Worthington, wit. (Elizabeth Hicks Hummell in HICKS HISTORY OF GRANVILLE CO., NC, V. I, MARRIAGE BONDS, 1965 [Oxford, NC: Coble Publishing Co., 1965] p. 205.) This marriage record does not appear in Brent H. Holcomb's transcriptions of the marriage bonds of Granville Co., NC. A few errors have been noted in Holcomb's transcriptions. Study of Granville Co. land records indicates the Norwood family was a neighbor of the Williams family in the Nutbush Creek area of Granville Co. Concerning the bondsman: The Norwood family seem to have been close associates of the Williams family from at least 1752; hence, a bondsman named Norwood. John Norwood was witness to a deed to John Williams [Sr.] (Sally's grandfather) in 1752, and a later patent to John Williams [Sr.] indicated his land adjoined that of Nathaniel Norwood.) Granville Co. Deed bk 4, 1796-1799, page 40 gives the following information: Aug. 4, 1796 - Samuel Hogg appoints Robert Weakley and Howel Tatom of the Southwest Territory now called Tennessee, attorneys, to attend to the division of the lands of my brother Thomas Hogg and obtain 1000 acres as speedily as possible left me by will of said Thomas Hogg and convey same to Thomas Bedford, having sold to him and received full payment. Wts. : none. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, Court minutes of Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1820 [Rocky Mount, NC: J. W. Watson, 1977], p. 199) This power of attorney indicates that Samuel Hogg was still residing in Granville Co. in 1796. Samuel Hogg's brother Thomas was the father of Dr. Samuel Hogg, the younger man who was prominent in politics in Tennessee. According to ............. in a e-mailed family journal dated 29 Jun 2000, Samuel Hogg was a Captain in the American Revolution (Virginia Soldiers of 1776, p. 912-913). He died in 1820 in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. (Ibid.) The one who received a pension (or applied for a pension) ca 1818 was no doubt the older Samuel Hogg as his age is given as age 73. State of Tennesse: Gibson Co., March Term 1833. Proved in court that Dr. Samuel Hogg of Nashville, and John B. Hogg of the town of Trenton, Gibson Co. are the only heirs at law of Samuel Hogg, Dec'd. late a Captain in the Rev. army. That Capt. Sam'l Hogg died in the year 1820 in the town of Lebanon, Wilson Co., Tenn. and that he died intestate and the foregoing was ordered certified, and the Clerk gave a certified copy thereof." (E-mail) Since the elder Samuel Hogg was reportedly a Revolutionary officer in Virginia, an online search of military records of Virginia was made March 2005. There were several military certificate numbers [bounty land certificates] issued by Virginia. Details are not known, but these are the Land Office certificate numbers of the first three listed on the Library of Virginia website: LO 73; LO 8052; LO ExMWt 437. [LO is land office. MWt is probably military warrant. EX not known.] Samuel Hogg was witness on 6 Mar 1811 to a power of attorney of Thomas Creedle of Granville Co. to Archibald Lucid of the same county to recover some money from Nathaniel Moss of Mecklenburg Co., VA. (Irwin Sneed, identity unknown, was another witness to the same document.) (Ransom McBride, "Migration As Shown in Powers of Attorney," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, V. 3, p. 236) If you can add information to this brief biography, please e-mail. E.W.Wallace

    1. Abigail Jones, widow of Edward Jones
    2. Here is the name of a book by Zae Hargett Gwynn which MAY {I don't have this book} have the court record you seek. Court minutes of Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1820 According to the Family History Library Catalog on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) , this book has not been filmed. One of her books is on microfiche. It is called something like Kinfolks of Granville Co., but if I remember correctly, it is some later deeds. Gwynn compiled other books about Granville Co. [colonial era] which may be of interest to you. Look for her name on the FHL catalog, URL given above. There is a book by Thomas McAdory Owen entitled History and Genealogies of Old Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1800, which treats of some of the social history of old Granville Co., but there is no mention of fornication of the widow Jones and the man in question. You may just have to read the film of the court records. Timothy Rackley of North Carolina in the last few years has published some deeds and wills of Granville co., but I have not seen any information about court records. If you live near an LDS family history center, no doubt you can order film of records of Granville Co. from Salt Lake city to read--when you have the time. Most court records of colonial times are rarely indexed, so one has to lead line by line. A kinsman of mine living in Granville Co. was required to pay the court something for a base-born child he sired. However, he married a woman in Mecklenburg Co., VA, if I remember correctly. Abigail Jones appears three times in the book by McAdory, once in her husband's will, once in a court case involving Philemon Hawkins [not the crime you describe, however] and once as a purchaser at the estate sale of Thomas Perry. Since you are in Texas: The Clayton Library in Houston, or the San Antonio Public Library on Soledad Street may have some of these books. You might try to access their online catalogs. How about the Texas State Library? They used to have an interlibrary loan system. E.W.Wallace California
