    3. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, December 01, 1998 7:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNWILSON-L] Granville County, NC > Wilson County TN It appears that much of the impetus for the rapid settlement of Wilson Co., TN, was due to several things: (!) the State of North Carolina made generous grants of land to soldiers in the Revolutionary War and these were sold and resold until settlers finally took up residence; (2) the "pacification" of the Middle Tennessee region by the first decade of the 19th century; (3) the period of relative peace from 1783-1800, which increased the population which in turn spurred the search for new land; (4) the decision to build Avery's Trace and Walton Road, which made migration easier; and (5) inheritance laws which either gave the entire estate to the eldest son or divided land equally among all the heirs....which resulted in many families receiving insufficient or unfertile acreage to support themselves. According to Dixon L. Merritt, HISTORY OF WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE (1961), p. 19, "It is a bootless task to say that Hickory Ridge -- or Spring Creek or Drake's Lick or Smith's Fork -- was the first settlement. All of them were 'waiting to be born'. And all were born at nearly the same time." "Hicory Ridge -- A short distance west of Lebanon rises a ridge of high ground, forested, drained by the headwaters of Spencer's, Cedar, and Barton's Creeks. It is Hickory Ridge and in this beautiful setting was established one of the most prosper- ous and flourishing settlements existing in Wilson county before 1800." [ibid.] "Into the wilderness came men and their families, chiefly North Carolinians such as JOHN K. WYNNE and CHARLES KAVANAUGH. [caps are mine] There was JOHN HARPOLE, already noted as a frontiersman, and JOHN B. WALKER. One historian (J.V. Drake) dates their coming in 1794; another (Goodspeed's History) as 1799. The former date appears too early, as Indian troubles discouraged settlement at that time; the latter is proven incorrect by existing records. The most likely date for this settement is the autumn of 1797." [p. 20] "Three well-known North Carolinians, BENJAMIN SEAWELL, the REV. GREEN HILL, and SETH MABRY, related by marriage, moved to 'the new country' together some years after the close of the Revolution. GREEN HILL had visited Middle Tennessee in the summer of 1796, according to his Journal, settling in Wilson County. The home of Col. BENJAMIN SEAWELL, built near Horn Springs 'before 1799,' according to records, stood until recent years. JOHN WYNNE, a Virginian who had moved to North Carolina, and his son, JOHN KNIBB WYNNE, were the first of a large family to settle in Wilson County." [ibid.] JOHN KNIBB WYNNE was in Franklin County, NC, as late as June Court, 1796, when he is listed as a buyer in the estate sale of JOHN KITCHEN, decd. Other Wilson County families named in the sale are: (JOHN )PRIMM, (BURRELL) PERRY, (JOSIAH) JACKSON, (JORDAN) HILL, (JOHN) GHOLSON. [Bradley, WILL BOOK B, Franklin County, North Carolina, 1794-1804, p. 16.] Others listed in FRANKLIN CO., NC, were: WILLIAM POWELL (first husband of RUTH ANN TAYLOR and father of JOHN POWELL of the 3rd Civil District) and WILLIAM BABB (second husband of RUTH ANN), whose log cabin is preserved as a historic site by the Tennesssee Conference of the Methodist Church at Bethlehem M. Church, just west of Lebanon on US 70; HARDY and HENRY HUNT, brothers-in- law of RUTH ANN; FERRELLS, MASSEYS, MABRYS, WILLIAMS, and a host of others. Some came from Granville: HARRIS, GILLIAM, TARVER (originally Nortampton Co), SMITH, HEARN, and others. Hope this helps. 3. Barbara and Group, My Garner's seem to migrate about as often as your kin Barbara, started in VA (1750) > Granville Co. (1770-1815/16) > Wilson Co. TN (1818-1832) > Salem, Marion County IL (1832-1835). The Garner patriarch and matriarch, daughter in law and three of their adult Garner children died in the Cholera Epidemic of the fall of 1834. Finally loosing the wanderlust or cheap land and one by one settled semi permanently in Wright and Webster Co. Mo. between 1835 -1850, except for a few brave souls who set out for Napa Co. and San Benito Co. CA before 1850. I am curious to find out if anyone had kin that went from Granville Co. > Wilson Co. to Marion Co. IL. My families came out of the "Dutch Dist." in Granville. Is this where the other families that migrated to Wilson started out? Do we have a time frame or was it more or less continuous. Was land offered. If anyone out there has read any materials that deal with this subject or has any information on the Granville > Wilson Migration PLEASE enlighten the rest of us. 3. Henry Asbury Bullock son of James (Capt) Bullockand Melinda Bledsoe was born in1826 in Granville Co., NC . He died about 1900 or shortly afterwards---a Court appearance was Jul 1899, sale of his land Jan 1906. He lived in the Tally Ho section and the Ledge of Rock Dist. Married Jan 25, 1847 in Granville Co., NC to Nancy Goss (dau. of Rowland (Rolin) Goss and Barbary Waller) born abt 1832 in Granville Co., Died before 1880 (she is not in the census for 1880). Children: 1. William (Snap) Milton Bullock married Mary Jane Ragland 2. James R. Bullock married Artelia Cash 3. Mary M. Bullock married T. N. Bivins 4. Elizabeth (Bettie) Bullock married M. C. Bivins and was living in Richmond, Va. in 1906 per division from sale of Henry Asbury Bullock's land. 5. Thomas Lane Bullock married Anna Lee Haithcock and Virginia (Jennie) B. Haithcock---some people have questioned his married to two Haithcock saying one was not a Haithcock---to be proven 6. Ametter Dulcie Bullock married Jack Freeman 7. Benjamin Henry Bullock married Florence Dora Hux. Where did Henry Asbury Bullock die and where is he buried? Did he leave NC and go to live with his daughter Bettie living in Richmond?? I have found very little information---court minutes had the appearance as Jul 1899 and the newspaper ran an advertisement on the sale of the land. His son "Snap" Bullock was the administrator of the Estate. When is the date of death for Nancy Goss? Where is she buried? Henry Asbury Bullock was wounded in the hip in the Civil War, and then transferred to the Navy, working out of Richmond, Va. One of the boats was the Roanoke---said he at least got 3 meals a day. What kind of boat was the Roanoke---was it a fighting boat or supply boat??? I have searched and searched the files in the Thornton Library, Oxford, NC for above. Barbara B. Elliott---Durham, NC

    2. Hello! Here is my line of Peace's, Cannady's and Green's. My greatgrandfather: John(6) Wesley Peace (William(5), Samuel(4), Joseph(3), Joseph(2), John(1)), born 20 June 1846 Granville County, North Carolina; died of a stroke 9 October 1937, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. He married on 31 October 1873 in Granville County, Emma Frances Cannaday, daughter of John and Nancy Hicks (nee' Green) Cannaday. I would like to complete this with some more Cannady information if someone has it. There is also a Faucette connection. I believe that Emma's sister married a Faucette but am unsure. I am basing this on old family pictures. I have some pictures of John's brother Abner Peace and of Samuel Peace as well if anyone is connected to that family and would like to have the pictures. 2. Dear Donna and Listmembers: Does anyone know any thing about my William and Francis Hall of NC? The only facts I know about William Hall are that 1. He was my Great Great Grandfather, and 2. He had at least eight children, some born in NC and some in TN: Alfred W., John W., Phebe, Ivan, Andrew J., Lydie E., Rebecca (no further info), and my Great Grandfather, Robert Thomas Hall. William may have had other sons. Robert Thomas Hall was born Oct 22, 1842, in Como, TN (located in Henry County), died May 7, 1928 in Newark, AR (Independence County), married Mary A.(Mollie) McDonald Sep 8, 1867, in AR. I have a lot of history on Robert Thomas Hall and his descendants. Frank Clemmer

    3. Aloha, My main family from Granville was that of Willis and Cary Stroud in the 1850 Census. Apparently they moved that same year to Warren Co. Ky with their family including Melvina, who married Presley Berry there. They had a child Laura Alice and Melvina died, apparently in childbirth. Laura married my great grand father John Jackson McLemore. Then the 'plot thickens' for lately I have begun to think that the McLemore info I have long searched for leads back to Granville Co.-John Jackson McLemore was the son of James Thomas McLemore, who was the son of Joel McLemore. What I know of him is that he was born "1801 in N.C." lived in Logan Co. Ky and he died in 1866. His mother was Temperance, last name unknown, who died in Logan in 1830 and I believe her husband's name was John McLemore. Sorting out Johns is hard, but I think he came to Tn from N.C.,(possibly because of bounty land) before settling in Kentucky. Son Joel was married in Tn to an Elizabeth Broadaway about 1820. I am trying to find out if the John McLemore born 1762 in Brunswick Va who married Sarah Carne in Granville is my John. Info sent to me about him said he "lived Granville at enlistment, moved to Montgomery Co. N.C. for eight years, Burke co. N.C. for eight years, then to Knox Co. Tn where he applied 18 Aug. 1832. No data for wife". It will be funny if I find out that there was a connection for Strouds and McLemores way back in Granville! Also may have Walkers, Jones, Hammonds from near there-not sure yet. Is one ever sure?! I have no access to reference material here. Wonder if anyone would have 1840 Granville Census and would be so kind as to tell me what Strouds were there? Or if anyone knows who Willis Stroud's father was. Thanks for any help, any correspondence with fellow seekers. First person who finds Temperance to John McLemore marriage-info gets Hawaiian goodies! Mahalo! Bobbi
