I would think it means she was a maid. That would include cleaning and taking care of various house duties, I believe. Deloris Williams
>on the 1880 census i found a woman who was widowed living with her father & >mother inlaw it listed her occupation as domestic work what does that mean? >she cleaned foe other people? or perhaps something else? >Judi > In my experience "domestic" in census records is a very common entry, and can simply mean that she didn't have an outside job. Chances are she just helped with the cooking and housework in the home. -- Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com NCGenWeb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ Winston-Salem NC area genealogy: http://www.fmoran.com/

The Granville county Nc obitauries have been updated . Most of the time on a daily bases! Typing as fast as I can. If you do not see a surname you are interested in,... request it ! If I have them I will type them up sooner! if I have not pulled the obituaries as of yet,.. I will kept them in mind to type up first when I pull them.. This will soon be apart of the Granville County Genealogical Society webpage . Thanks to Dave Glascow and the GCGSociety,.. Dave will be setting the website up to put the obituaries in a database . This will make it easier to search for names and will make the obituaries more organized and easier to find ... For now they can be found at this address: http://www.geocities.com/tina_tarlton/Old-Oxford-obituaries-10.htm I am still learning how to build websites so if you are having trouble viewing the pages please let me know ! You wrote: I'm still hoping to find some Grisham researchers in Granville. Just know you're out there somewhere. Need some help hooking up my roots way back when (pre 1800). Suggestion: Look for various spellings of the surname Grisham. There were Grissoms in early North Carolina, I believe, principally in Orange Co., which is a tough county to research as many of the records are missing. If you are near an LDS center, telephone and ask their days and hours of opening. Then ask if they have the AIS on hundreds of microfiche. AIS - Accelerated Indexing System. This is a census index for the whole US from the earliest census through 1850. Search 1 would be the earliest censuses, but some tax lists (good for clues) were used, as much of the 1790 census was destroyed. Use all these censuses to find your ancestors, but be sure to get some instructions. There is generally a four-page handout to explain it, and also there is a short explanation on the LDS online catalog. Look for the word Almanacs, and the first item should be AIS. See if you can understand it. This index is full of errors, omissions, duplications, misspellings, but if you find your folks, you are in luck. Also, you want to check the LDS catalog at www.familysearch.org for films for Granville Co., of which there are MANY. Texas has some great genealogical libraries. Call up some near your home and ask what they have in the way of genealogical publications. San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, Victoria all have good genealogical collections. There may be others which I have not visited. Oh, yes, the State Library in Austin. And also try some community college libraries. E.W.Wallace
Looking for my great grandmother, Susan Currin (b. 1841), who married an Artemus Watson in 1860 in Anson Co., NC. That's all I know about her. I have found a Susan Currin from Granville Co. whose parents were Wyatt and Elizabeth Currin, but no info about Susan's marriages. Can anyone help? Need proof that this Susan is the one I'm looking for. Thanks, Sherry
To Peggy Hermann and other NC Oakley Researchers: I am researching the Oakley family but only have one name to work with. Parthenia Oakley married Thomas O'Briant 26 Aug 1833 in Granville Co NC. I am trying to find out if they had a son John Robert O'Briant who was b 10 Nov 1834. More than likely Parthenia died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter as Thomas married Elizabeth Gordon 22 July 1835. I have absolutely nothing else on Parthenia. Could she be somewhere in your line? I need her parents and siblings. Peggy McAndrew
I'm still hoping to find some Grisham researchers in Granville. Just know you're out there somewhere. Need some help hooking up my roots way back when (pre 1800). Thanks for your time. Jenny in Texas
Dear List, Can anyone bring me up to date on the Granville Heritage Book? When is it due to ship? Thank you in advance. Kent Elam

Looking for information on William Bobbitt......Thanks
A recent posting mentioned the name Isom Johnson. I have collected a little data on this man (living in 1850 and perhaps later) because of his wife Mary Snead Williams. Isom Johnson is NOT my direct ancestor. His father-in-law, John Williams, was a son of Samuel Farrar Williams, a former resident of Granville Co., NC. who migrated to Henderson Co. ca 1806, says his rejected Rev War pension claim. Here is some info for what it is worth. Do not ask me for more information, as presently I have none. ISOM JOHNSON of Henderson Co., KY Age 39 in Aug 1850 census He was the son-in-law of John Williams of Henderson Co., KY and his wife Susannah Starks, both natives of NC, as was Isom. Some of Isom's children are named in Susannah Williams's will. In the 1850 census, District 1, Henderson Co., KY, p. 288, Dwelling 255, Family 265, this is the family composition: Isham [sic] Johnson, 39, M, Farmer, $300, b. NC Mary S., age 32, b. KY (all the children listed below were born in Kentucky) Belfield W., age 14 Susan J., age 12 Sally E., age 9 John M., age 8 Elliott M., age 6 Monroe, age 4 Archer, age 1 The next family in the census is Susan Williams with two adult sons and a 17-year-old daughter Amelia. This is Mary Johnson's mother, Susannah Williams, widow of John Williams III. Johnson's wife died 1857; he is believed to have survived her. About Susannah (Starks) Williams, mother of Mary Snead Williams Johnson: Susannah STARK/STARKS. Henderson Co. Cemetery Inscriptions in GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN (Henderson Co., Genealogical Society) give a birthdate, 29 June 1790, but no birthplace, for Susannah or Susan Williams. Her death date is given as 11 June 1860. Granville Co., NC Records Based on abstracts of court records of Granville Co., NC, Susannah is believed to have been the orphan of James Stark of Granville Co., NC, and it is believed her widowed mother Mary Stark remarried to a man named Harrison, first name unknown. Susannah's name, with that of her siblings, first appears in the Granville Co. court minutes of August 1798. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, COURT MINUTES OF GRANVILLE CO., NC 1746-1820) An abstract of Granville court minutes, Aug court 1798, gives the following formation: "James Stark, guardian to Roland Stark with John Stark and John Denton as securities. Mary Harrison, guardian to Ellender, Susannah and Lyddy Harrison, with bond secured by John Stark and John Denton." (Ibid. In Granville Co., on 24 Feb 1797, John Denton was married to Sarah Starks, bondsman Sterling Yancey, a brother-in-law of Samuel Farrar Williams of Granville Co. and later of Henderson Co., KY. The relationship of Sarah Starks to Susannah Starks is unknown. Perhaps she was a paternal aunt or cousin. John Denton died the latter part of 1820 in Henderson Co.. His estate is listed in Henderson Co. Will Bk A-340. His will was proved in Henderson Co., KY 23 May 1817 (Will Bk. A-242). John Denton and other Denton family members were from Granville Co., NC, as indicated by deeds and court minutes abstracted by Gwynn. There was a close association of John Denton and the Williams family of Henderson Co., KY as evidenced in the documents of that county. A Samuel Denton was married to Elizabeth Mitchell in 1798, Granville Co.) Sprinkled throughout court minutes of Granville Co. are notes of guardian accounts of these children to be settled, and they are variously called Stark and Harrison. The abstracts do not spell out the relationships of the guardians to the children. Mary Harrison probably had been the wife of James Stark. Thomas Rowland may have been her brother or her brother-in-law (husband of a sister). A subsequent court order in Granville Co. May court 1804, six years later, indicates these children are orphans of James Stark, deceased. Abstract of the 1804 court order reads: "Thomas Rowland and wife to appear and make new bonds as guardians of orphans of James Stark, decd; namely, Ellener, Susannah, Lydia and Roland Stark (called Harrison)." Other Granville Co. records indicate Rowland's wife's name was Sarah. A few months later, Aug 1804, court records show Thomas Rowland resigned as guardian of another child named Benjamin Stark, who may have become of legal age. In Nov 1805: Jane Stark and Rowland Stark to Benjamin Stark, 200 acres. Perhaps Susannah Starks's mother had been a Rowland. (Brent H. Holcomb, MARRIAGES OF GRANVILLE CO., NC 1753-1868 (Baltimore: Genealogical Publ. Co., 1981) Other Granville Co., NC Records Granville Co. marriages show Rowland Stark married Sally Hays 1 Feb 1813. (Ibid.) A Thomas Rowland, probably an older relative, had bought land in 1760 on Nut Bush Creek, Granville Co., on Edward Weaver's and John Weaver's lines. Nut Bush Creek in Granville Co. is the area where the Williams families lived, John Williams, Esq. and his brother William from about 1750 till their deaths. (Gwynn, DEEDS....) Note: Weaver is the maiden name of the bride of Jenks Watterman Williams, son of John Williams II and Susannah of Henderson Co., KY. Possibly Mary Weaver's parents were also from Granville Co., NC. No male with the surname Stark(s) is shown in early Granville Co. deeds, as abstracted by Gwynn. Therefore, Starks may have died before he acquired land (unless by grant), or the family may have migrated later from Virginia. More research is needed. More research is needed into the identity of the Harrison family. Henderson Co., KY Records In Henderson Co. deed K-391, 1845, Susan (nee Starks) is called "widow of John." In the 1850 census, Henderson Co., KY, Susan Williams appears as head of household. Dwelling 256, Family 266: Susan Williams, age 59, b. NC John R., age 26, b. KY, farmer Jenks W., age 23, b. KY, farming Amelia A., age 17, b. KY John J. Davis, age 8, b. KY Living next door to Susan was Claudius L. Williams and his family, and next door to Claudius is Monroe L. Williams, both sons of Susannah and her deceased husband, John. In her will, recorded in Henderson Co. Will Bk C-172, (written 21 May 1860 and proved July court 1860) Susanna Williams, of the City of Henderson, named her surviving children. Her executors were her sons Jenks W. Williams and John Rusk Williams. Children named in the will were her deceased daughter Mary S. Johnson; Monroe L.; Albion A.; Claudius L.; John Rusk; Cerra M. White; Jenks W.; Amelia. Lucy Searcy, after she was widowed by Bartlett Searcy, formerly of Granville Co., NC, continued to live in Madison Co., KY in the late 1790s and perhaps later. Can anyone help me 1) confirm Lucy's maiden name, alleged to be Williams of Granville Co., NC 2) identify this Joseph Williams who married Lucy's daughter? This allegation of Lucy's maiden name appears, without documentation, in Alvahn Holmes's publication SOME DESCENDANTS OF FARRAR'S ISLAND (FHL film 1033635, Item 1). Lucy Searcy is characterized as mother of the bride (giving consent) for the marriage in Madison Co., KY of her daughter Sally Searcy to Joseph Williams 21 Mar 1796; Robert Searcy was bondsman. Joseph is suspected [only a hunch, you genealogists] to be a son of Henry Williams and his wife Elizabeth of Caswell Co. NC. Reasons for this suspicion: 1. Henry Williams's daughter and son-in-law Richard Ready-Money Oldham and his wife the former Ursley/Ursala Duke Williams [widow of Reuben Peoples] migrated to Madison Co. from Caswell Co. ca 1787 or somewhat later. 2. Caswell Co., NC Deed Bk J-108-09: Joseph Williams of Madison Co., KY to Andrew McCauley of Orange Co., NC, for $300, 280 A on Stoney Cr [Caswell Co.] being part of tract willed Joseph Williams by Henry Williams decd. 13 Sept 1795.
