    1. [NCGRANVI] Isham AKIN
    2. Does anyone know the mother of Isham AKIN's children? I understand there is a marriage record of Isham and Lereviah Davis, but that was long after his children were born. I know he came from Virginia where he is mentioned in a Chesterfield Co will. He is found in numerous VA records, but I have found no mention of a wife. A deed he signed did not include a waiver of dower rights by a wife. I have identified, with varying degrees of confidence, his parents, grandparents, greatgrandparents, etc., and several generation of his descendants, but not his wife. Tom

    1. [NCGRANVI] Who is out there?
    2. Deloris Williams
    3. Clear DayMy list in Warren County is as follows: WILLIAMS, with Hubbard Williams, African American, born about 1826, a slave first of William K. Kearny and later of Dr. Robert Edgar Williams. I have a lot of info on him, but am still looking to find out something about his mother, Melvy, a Kearny slave, and about some of his children who were living with him in the late 1800's but have found no trace- Luke, Minnie, and Mary Williams. He lived until 1900 in Fork Township, when he died. DAVIS, with Robert Y .Davis, African American, born 1879/ died 1938, where he lived in Fishing Creek Township. He had children named Robert Garland, Ivy May, Walter, Sallie, Charlie, Percy, Virginia, Lydia, Cleo Bernadine, James Otis, Melvin, Macy and Connie Davis. Robert was married 3 times, and am also trying to find out info about his first wife, BETTY HODGES, who died probably around 1906. Also looking for JAMES DAVIS, born about 1839, Robert's father, who seems to have lived in Fishing Creek in 1880. I know of the last wife that James had named Lucy, but also looking for info on at least two previous wives. SNEED, Walter, born 1852,died 1941, was a Mulatto - the son of the slaveowner William M. Sneed in Granville and Nancy a slave on his plantation - who moved first to Halifax County, and married FRANCES BAILEY, and later to Warren, where he married MARY FRANCES GREEN, daughter of JAMES THOMAS GREEN,b. 1842, of Fork Township, and later her cousin, SALLIE BETT ALSTON. Walter's children were: Alice, Mary, Elizabeth, Alvis, Stephen, Sam, Dora, Nannie, Estella, Georgianna, William, Sallie Bett jr., Walter, Laura, Frank, Ollie, and Esther Sneed. RODGERS, Joe, born 1869, Mulatto, probably in Wake County. Moved to Warren sometime between 1880 -1900 where he married MARY EVANS, born 1878, daughter of JAMES EVANS (b.about 1845),of Warren County. James had other children, William, James Haywood, John Archibald, and Parthenia (Theny) Evans. Also looking for James father, JAMES EVANS, born about 1814, who married MARTHA GREEN, born about 1824, whom I believe is the daughter of ALLEN GREEN, born about 1790. Need info on the first JAMES EVANS family and his connections to ARCHIBALD EVANS, MATTHEW EVANS, in the early 1800's, along with any EVANS, as well as to who might be his father. GREEN, Thomas, born about 1780, and Allen, listed as Mulatto. What was their relationship, which I believe is brothers, and who were Allen's children? Thomas children were: Lucretia (Creecy), Polly, Elizabeth (Betsy), Lucy, Nancy, and William Green (born 1823, who was the father of James Thomas Green). All of the Greens lived in the Fork Township area of Warren. Warren County Census with 13 free, 2 slave, and who died in 1850. In 1790, John Green had been listed in Halifax County as head of family with 16 free, and I suspect he may have been the father of the Warren County Green family. Also in this Green Family is Allen Green, who first showed up in 1810 with family of 4 free, and suspect he and Thomas were brothers because of the close associations with their families throughout the following years. Looking for proof about the Green family relationships between John, Thomas,Allen and later Samuel, all of whom lived in Warren County from 1800 on. COPELAND, Benjamin, born about 1812, in Halifax County, was listed as Mulatto. He was married to FRANCES HAWKINS and they first show up in Warren County in 1850 with the following children: Penny (Penina), Martha, Mary, Washington (who I believe was also called John), Harrison (aka James Henry), Benjamin (Baldy), Frances (Folly), Elisha Edwin, Louisa, Virginia, and Margianne Copeland. PENINA COPELAND married JAMES THOMAS GREEN in 1867. Margianne doesn't show living with the family until 1870, yet she was born in about 1850, so I don't know what her story was. She did marry Wiley Burton RICHARDSON in 1874, in Warren County. Does anyone know who were the parents of BENJAMIN COPELAND and FRANCES HAWKINS?

    3. I wanted to let the list know we have gotten an alphabetical list of all those we have been able to identify who gave Granville Co. as their place of residence when they enlisted in the Civil War. I think we have about 1600 names which are online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgranvi/index.htm We hope to slowly start adding what additional information we can find. If you have ordered any service records for any of those listed, I would be happy to transcribe them to put online. I would also like to ask that anyone who recognizes any of those listed, please check for spelling of the names since some clearly appear to be in error. Thanks, Nola Duffy CC Granville Co. 2. Subject: Drucilla Rose abt 1750-abt 1800 Evelyn, I am interested in the Rose information you just posted. I am descended from Drucilla Rose who married Pryor Gardner. They were from Halifax Co., NC and came to Warren Co., Ga. which is next to Hancock Co, Ga. Some say Drucilla Rose is daughter of Wormsley Rose, but I have seen no proof of this. I am also trying to prove my connection to Thomas Harris s/o Thomas Harris d. about 1780 and Sarah (Harris) Harris in Granville Co., NC. Drucilla and Pryor Gardner's daughter, Sarah Gardner, married Thomas Harris who died 1816 Baldwin Co., Ga. I strongly suspect he is the Thomas, s/o the above Thomas. 1. [NCGRANVI] [WILLIAMS] Thomas Williams and Rebbeca Langston VA, NC, SC 1740-1804
    2. William Lee Simpson, Jr. asked about the above-named couple. I do not have time to do any research now on the couple. However, I know a little about the Langston family of the Tar River area of old Granville Co., NC. I believe, but have not done a lot of research, that they may have migrated to NC from colonial Surry Co., VA. I suspect the Williamses of that area around the Tar River also came from Surry Co. I base this on the research of my Rose-Langston-Washington families of Knap of Reeds area (near Orange Co., NC). Rose and Washington were intermarried, and research seems to show that their parents were either from Isle of Wight or Surry Co., VA. The wife of William Rose was Amy Langston, as implied in Rose's will cited below, in which he names his brother-in-law James Langston. Amy married two times after the death of William Rose. At least one of her sons--Frederick--migrated after the Revolution to what is now Putnam Co., GA, and his father-in-law, William Washington was in the adjoining Georgia Co.--Hancock, I believe. Perhaps the citations given in this brief sketch will lead you to other information about Thomas Williams and his wife Rebecca Langston. Submitted by E.W.Wallace, a Rose-Washington descendant WILLIAM ROSE II. (ca 1729 prob VA-ca 1768 NC) WIR00068. A very well documented biography of William Rose is found in Eunice Brooks Freese, WILLIAM ROSE OF SURRY CO., VA, and will not be repeated here. Only added information will be presented. See biography of Thomas Rose for some land transactions in Granville District, Colonial North Carolina, involving both Thomas and son William or one or the other, beginning ca. 1752. Granville Co. was formed 1746 of Edgecombe Co. William Rose appears on the 1750 tax list of Granville Co., Jonathan White's list. His father Thomas Rose, Sr. with 2 tithables appears on the same list. It is assumed from this list that William Rose was at least of legal age and presumably had land (not proved). (Ge Lee Corley Hendrix, "The Inhabitants of Granville County, NC, 1746, 1750," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, V. 8 [Feb 1982], p. 29) William Rose and his associates, Ephraim Merrit and William Washington, all appear on a Muster Roll of the Regiment of Colonel William Eaton, Granville Co., NC Oct 8, 1754, in Captain Andrew Hampton's Company. Also in Captain Hampton's Company were William Williams, Serjeant, and John Williams, Corporal. (The latter two men are probably the sons of John Williams II, formerly of Goochland Co, VA (qv) of Nutbush Creek area of Granville Co., NC, but this has not been proved as Jan 2003.) (Murtie June Clark, COLONIAL SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH 1732-1774, p. 727) At Halifax on 9 Sep 1763, both William Rose and Thomas Rose received grants from the agents of Lord Granville. These appear consecutively in Granville Co. Deed Bk H, page 70 for William Rose and page 70-71 for Thomas Rose. William Rose's grant was for 300 acres for 27 pds. Virginia money. It was near Kemp Creek & Nap of Reeds Creek. Thomas Rose's grant was for 404 acres of land for 24 pds. Virginia money and it was near Nap of Reeds Creek, Townsend's line and John Walker's land. (Timothy W. Rackley, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS, 1763-1766 [Kernersville, NC: Published by author, 1999], pp. 87 and 88.) William Rose owned land in Edgecombe Co. (part of his inheritance?) or had removed to Edgecombe Co., NC by 1764, so indicated by Eunice Brooks Freese, compiler of a history of the Rose family of this area. Warren Co., NC Deed Bk A-49: Thomas Mann to William Rose, both of Edgecombe Co. 12 Aug 1764. 40 pds. VA money for 640 A., an Earl Granville Grant 1 Dec 1760. Wit: James Drake, Asia Drake, Isom Wheless. Ack: Nov. Court 1764, Ben McCulloch, CC. Reg: 10 Jan 1765, Sugan [Sugar?] Johnson, P.R. William Rose's abstracted will indicates that by the time of his death, he had accumulated a modest estate, or perhaps a handsome one for the time and place. Granville Co. NC unrecorded will-page 54. [Written] Dec 1, 1768 - proved Jan. court 1769- William Rose wills to son Frederick Rose 300 acres on Reeds creek, 6 head of cattle, and 3 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to my son William Rose, my lower tract on Nap of Reeds creek known as "Elwoods," 6 cattle, 4 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to son Howel Rose, all land whereon I now live after his mother's death, she to live and use it for her lifetime; to daughter Sarah Williams, 10 pds; to daughter Elizabeth Rose, 40 pds. when she is 21 years old or married; to daughter Winneyfred Rose, a negro woman, 5 cattle now at Robert Sorriels when she is 21 years old or married; to my wife Amy Rose, 2 negroes, household furniture, livestock, for her lifetime and, at her death, to be sold and money to my son Howel Rose, with exception of setting up Frederick and William with enough of pewter, tools, etc., etc. Exrs: wife Ame Rose, brother-in-law James Langston. Wts: James Langston, James Willis, Jean Langston. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVI LLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1808 [Rocky Mount, NC: Joseph W. Watson, 1973], p. 22) Comment: I suggest you try to interlibrary loan some of these books, but Timothy Rackley's books are so new that it is doubtful many libraries have acquired his books, outside of North Carolina. He has a new book of abstracted Granville Co. wills. If you want his e-mail address, e-mail me. E.W.Wallace

    1. [NCGRANVI] RE: Joel Rogers
    2. NEAL MULLINS
    3. Hello List, I'm looking for the parents of my ggggrandfather Joel Rogers who was born in Granville or Wake Co., NC in 1798. I believe him to be related to the large group of Rogers who came from the Rhode Island area, but am not positive about that. He married Sally Norred in 1822 in Bibb Co., AL and had two sons while there: Marshal P. Rogers born 1825 and William Rogers born 1826. The family then moved to Weakley Co., TN where two more sons were born: James Rogers born 1828 and George Rogers born 1830. Joel owned/farmed land in Weakley Co., near Job Rogers, Dr. Jubilee Rogers, Thomas Rogers, John and John W. Rogers and others. Joel and his family then moved to Leake Co., MS where he bought land and lived for several years. I believe he died around 1853 or so in Leake Co. His son, Marshal P. Rogers was my gggrandfather who left MS and moved to Louisiana, bought land in 1861 just before LA susceeded from the Union and before the Civil War began in that area. He moved his famil! y into Texas after that. If anyone knows anything about this Joel Rogers and who his parents might have been, I would greatly appreciate the information. Thank You, Eileen Rogers Mullins nemullins@msn.com

    1. [NCGRANVI] Sherwood Harris - Several Generations Of
    2. Ira Harris of Harris-Hunters has submitted an 1880 census enumeration of a Sherwood Harris, in Missouri, if memory serves. I have collected some notes on a couple of early Sherwood Harris. As indicated in the first paragraph, I cannot identify his parentage nor his relatives. Can someone shed some light? If one of these Sherwood Harrises is your ancestor, please cite the sources when using this material in your own genealogy. Oh, yes and I have thrown in a little info about an early Richard Henderson of Goochland Co. (with wife Henrietta, who as a widow lived in Cumberland Co., VA). If you solve the puzzle of who are the parents of each of these Sherwood Harrises, please share. E.W.Wallace SHERWOOD HARRIS. This man is puzzling. It seems likely there were two or three men of this name, one in colonial Hanover Co., VA ca 1746, perhaps a later one who appears in Granville Co., NC records, and still a later one in Madison Co., KY. Further, the one who appears in colonial Louisa Co. is likely that Sherwood may be a descendant of Robert Harris "the immigrant," (not the probable 3rd gen Robert Harris of Louisa Co., son of William Harris and Temperance Overton). Sherwood Harris in Louisa Co. is associated with others who have "family" names. This name appears in Louisa Co., VA and later in in Granville Co., NC. Is he the same man? Is he related to the William Harris and Temperance Overton, paarents of Robert Harris (Major) of Louisa Co., VA? Seemingly there was an earlier Sherwood Harris of Hanover Co. and perhaps also of Louisa Co., as indicated in these deeds: His name appears in Louisa Co. deeds DB A-127-128 13 Feb 1743/1744 John Foster of Fredericksville Par., Louisa Co. and Ann, his wife, to Shirwood Harris of same. 15 pds currt. money. 104 acres and plantation on both sides of Cubb Creek in Fredericksville Par... (Davis, p. 35) (Cubb Creek emptied into the South Anna River near the Hanover Co. line.) This name, Sherwood Harris, appears early in Granville Co., NC records, many of whose early residents came from Virginia counties along the James River. Later, Sherwood Harris's name appears in the grantee indexes of deeds, Madison Co., KY, along with wife Henrietta. Other Harris males in Granville Co., NC and the year of their appearance: 1774 - Sherwood Harris 1774 - George Harris " Richard Harris " Clayborn Harris " David Harris (Note: It is to be noted that this is neither Richard Henderson of colonial Goochland Co., VA, whose wife was Henrietta, nor is he the probable grandson of Richard Henderson the elder--the famous Richard Henderson of Granville Co., NC, who was instrumental in the establishment of Boonesborough, later in Kentucky. This is the Goochland Co. will of the older Richard Henderson, believed by some genealogists to have been the father of Samuel Henderson of colonial Granville Co., NC. WB .... "P. 424 Will of Richard Henderson of Southam Parish, Goochland. To sons Samuel, James, and Nathan, and to daughters Mary Henderson and Henrietta Henderson, 1 shilling each, at 21. To my brother Edward Henderson, 200 acres off of tract I live on, between his plantation and mine. To my wife Henrietta, all rest of my land and estate and she to be executrix. Dated 10 Feb 1745. DB 5, 424-5 and Goochland COB 6-501). Later Sherwood Harris sold this property he had purchased of Richard Henderson, and seemingly he resided in Hanover Co. at this later date: DB A-283-285. 5 Feb 1746 Shirwood Harris of St. Paul's Par., Hanover Co., to Nelson Anderson of St. Paul's Par., Hanover Co. 56 pds. currt. money. 252 acres land and plantation, purchased of John Foster by deed 13 Feb 1743... on both sides of Cub Creek in Fredericksville Par... David Harris' line ... Shirwood Harris' corner... Timberlake's line. Shirwood Harris Wit: Barttelot Anderson, Richard. Bickering, William Thompson. 26 May 1747 acknowledged by Shirwood Harris. (Davis, p. 35) Cubb Creek was a branch of the South Anna River.
