    3. I thought I'd pass this info along to some of the Mailing Lists which I think could be useful to those seeking Maps of the North Carolina area. The following link is to a site that was posted by someone some time ago, and I thought it might be a good idea to pass it along again since there may be new members who may not be aware of it. It is to a site that has scanned maps of each state in 1895, and North Carolina in particular. It has viewable and printable maps of each County that show some of the main areas of that county. http://www.livgenmi.com/nccounty.htm Deloris Williams

    1. [NCGRANVI] Will of Charles Williams, 1817, Granville Co., NC
    2. Perhaps this abstracted will of Granville Co., NC will be useful to some researchers of early Williams families of the Nutbush Creek area of old Granville Co. (now Vance Co.). Charles Williams had been a witness in Dec 1775 to the will of his older brother William Williams [of Nutbush Creek area of Granville Co., NC] who died testate ca 25 Dec 1775 at Boonesborough, VA, now Kentucky (in Madison Co., KY). William's will is reportedly unrecorded, but the original is at the North Carolina State Archives, but transcripts/abstracts are available in publications of Granville Co. (see publications by Zae Hargett Gwynn and more recently by Timothy Rackley) Granville Co., NC Will Book 8, 1816-1821, pp. 259-260, Apr. 22, 1817 - proved Aug. court 1819 - Charles Williams wills to son Robbin Williams the land whereon I live on Raleigh Road near Rewin [Ruin] Creek at Ragland's line, Burton's line, and Allen Williams's line on Glebe road containing 100 acres; all other land sold and 2/3rds of money to be given son Leonard Williams; to daughter Fanny Williams, a loom and apparatus, spinning wheel and cotton, and wool cards for herself and children and not at disposal of her husband; the balance sold and debts paid; any money left to go to my daughter Aggy Ragland, one fourth part, daughter Polley Craft, 1/2 part, Fanny Williams and her children (not her husband), 1/2 part; the other 1/4th to five sons: William, Leonard, John, Allen, and Robbin Williams. Excrs: John Hare, William M. Sneed, William Robards, Samuel Craft, Leonard Williams (William Morgan Sneed). Wts: Richard Sneed, Step Sneed, Elizabeth Yancey. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NC 1808-1833, V. 2 [Joseph W. Watson, 1976], p. 115) *Leonard Williams may be the one who appears in the 1800 NC census, Warren Co., which was adjacent to Granville Co., to the east. He seemingly is a single man, no females listed: 0-0-0-1-0 (Comment: Elizabeth Yancey, wife of Sterling Yancey, is daughter of William Williams, who died Dec 1775 at Boonesborough and his wife Phillis [Beckham?]. 1. [NCGRANVI] Re: NCGRANVI-D Digest V03 #17
    2. If I am correct, Colonial Records of North Carolina are large volumes of official records of North Carolina. There is one volume which is an index. (I was not aware there were church records in these. If there are, please let us subscribers know. I may take another look, although I don't think my folks were religious--more interested in horse racing, if I can believe some of the private collections held by the NC Archives.) Around Chapel Hill, I would say the Universities and maybe even community colleges in that area would have copies. Try to get on their online catalogs and find out. Some of the compilers of these heavy volumes had these names: Weeks, Saunders, Clark To check the correct title, go to this website: <A HREF="www.familysearch.org">www.familysearch.org</A> Check the catalog--the link is on the lower right Do a title search: colonial records of north carolina The second title which appears will be the correct one, I believe. There are 10-11 volumes. LDS says there are no films, but I believe someone has put these on microfiche. If you live in North Carolina and are near a large city public library, perhaps they have these on the shelves. I first found this great source in a LARGE university near my home--that is, when I could find parking!!! E.W.Wallace

    2. I apologize for cross posting as I know some of you will receive this more than one time. Does any one have a copy of Colonial Records, Historical Publications. I am looking for the records of the Church of England especially the Baptism records and marriages. The Archives said they had been published and they had a copy. Can anyone suggestion a location around Chapel Hill that might have a copy of this? I am looking for the baptism of Avery / Joel Avery Reeves about 1775/80. Also marriage for Jeremiah Reeves and Jane Brazile about 1753/8. Any information would be most appreciated. Beulah Reeves McCain GrannyMc@aol.com

    1. [NCGRANVI] John Washington of Colonial Granville Co., NC
    2. Can any of you subscribers add to this information? John Washington of colonial Granville Co., NC is believed to be the son of William Washington and his wife Tabitha [her name not confirmed] of the Tar River area. William Washington, a Baptist minister, died in Hancock Co., GA before Aug 1799 (probate). John, however, is believed to have remained in North Carolina. Additions to this information are welcomed. JOHN WASHINGTON. SON OF WILLIAM WASHINGTON OF GRANVILLE CO. In 1778, John entered land in Granville Co., NC, but apparently the land had already been entered by another. Entry 125. "John Washington enters 50 ac in Granville Co. on N side of Tarr R; border: William Washington [his father] on 'the' great branch & Thomas Philpots 'fifty ac only;' at 5 pds. Nov 3, 1778 money repaid as the land was before entered by T. Person." (Dr. A. B. Pruitt, ABSTRACTS OF LAND ENTRIES, GRANVILLE CO. NC 1778-1877, p. 11) (FHL book 975.6535, R28p) His name appears in the following Road Order, Granville Co., NC. Punctuation has been added by this writer. Feby 3, 1783 "The following persons are appointed to lay out a Road the best & most convenient way from near Shermons meeting house to a Road laid out from Caswel Court house to Granville County line viz't. John Washington, William Philpot, James Meadows, Jacob Slaughter William Allin Philip Lewis, Rich'd Fowle Miles Wells, Stephen Merrit, Jo's. Langston, Thomas Person Ja.'s Daniel, Tho's. Goss, George Roberts, John Williams, Ephra Frazier, William Kennon, William Gill & that John Washington, with the hands of Ja's. Daniel, Ja's. Hester, Jo's. Langston, Miles Wills, William Oakley, Tho's. Oakley, Hezekiah Habgood, Harrison Duncan, William Philpot, William Cocke, Person's hands at his Mill, open & keep the same in repair." (Thomas McAdory Owen, HISTORY AND GENEALOGIES OF OLD GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1800 [Greenville, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1993], p. 131) John Washington is shown on 1787 tax list of Granville Co. as having 1197 acres and either one or two slaves (headings missing from my photocopies of FHL film 19,039) E.W.Wallace descendent of William Washington's daughter Mary Mary was wife of Frederick Rose, of Granville Co., who also migrated to Georgia (If you post this information to either Washington or Rose surname lists, please include citations, like good genealogists should.)

    1. [NCGRANVI] Cemetery records
    2. Tina Tarlton Smith
    3. I have now typed up 4 webpages hoping people can benefit from them. I am still in the process of typing them up and will be adding more. I know not everyone will find a family member from these records but I hope they will help some people. Please remember the WPA Survey was done between 1930-1940 ... and not all graves were surveyed . This was a project that was to survey those that died before 1913 . However some did record some graves after 1913. Some of the WPA records have Kittrell which is a part of Vance county listed and some Virgilina cemeteries listed as part of Granville county nc I am not sure as to why that was recorded that way. To find more information on the WPA you can do a search on the internet that will give more details into this project. The Genealogy society has been working hard on a project to resurvey the cemeteries and this information will be rechecked for accuracy and with all those buried at the cemeteries and with additional cemeteries that did not get surveyed in the WPA records. This information is available at the NC State archives in Raleigh and at the Richard Thornton library. I have rechecked lots of the dates with the obituaries I have collected and so far the information is correct matching the obituaries with the dates the WPA collected. WPA records have been found very helpful and correct. Also take in consideration that some of the graves moved during Camp Butner when families had to move from their farms at this time during WWII. Directions also I have noticed have changed with additional roads and new development. But these records are Great information that might not be illegable to read from the stones or the stones may not be there today as I have found out from my own personal experience. http://www.geocities.com/tina_tarlton/Granville-Cemeteries-WPA.htm Tina Tarlton Smith

    2. I am looking for marriage records for Jeremiah Reeves and Jane Brazile. The info written about Jeremiah is that he was a member of the Church of England until he heard the minister of the Mar's Fork of Haw River preach. I had thought this was in Halifax County but now believe it is in Granville. Has anyone heard of a church by this name? I haven't been able to find a record in the Historical Baptist Church Records at Wake Forest. There may be records in the NC Archives. Someone said it was Mear's Fork on the Haw River in the next county south. Would appreciate any information anyone might have.
