>From "The Electronic Genealogist": Names are a key element of our research, but we all too often fail to realize that first names can tell us a lot, and even provide leads that we might not otherwise have. Behind the Name - The Etymology and History of First Names is a site that can provide you with the colorful information about names - history, meaning, and so on - but which can also provide you with some ideas, in some cases, that just might help you break a brick wall or two. You'll find the site at: http://www.behindthename.com/ One of my cousin-in-laws, Vicki Arrington, called this site to my attention Thanks, Vicki. Like many good sites, this one is not terribly complex. But you need to think while you use it in order to get the most benefit. For example, I started looking at the site by just reading down a few names in the "A" category. I found the name AATAMI a short way down the list. It was noted as being a Finnish form of Adam, and Adam was linked, so I clicked the link. Adam is listed as being "English, French, German, Polish, Russian, Romanian, and Biblical". The name carries this description: "This is the Hebrew word for 'man'. It could be ultimately derived from Hebrew adam meaning 'to be red', referring to the ruddy colour of human skin, or from Assyrian adamu meaning 'to make'. According to Genesis in the Old Testament Adam was created from the earth by God (there is a word play on Hebrew adamah 'earth'). He and Eve were supposedly the first humans, living happily in the Garden of Eden until Adam ate a forbidden fruit given to him by Eve." Okay. That's interesting flavor, but what's the big deal? What? You missed it? AATAMI is *Finnish*. So you're looking for this ancestor and he has a strange first name. You don't know the first thing about him - but suddenly his first name has just told you that he's Finnish - perhaps lived in the country, might have even been born there. Certainly his family is very likely to have a Finnish connection. That's a good clue - and it came from a name that probably sounded very strange indeed to you... But consider it from another angle. The name "Adam" doesn't have an obvious Finnish connection (see the list of countries above), and it is possible that, if he emigrated from Finland, he used a name form suitable to his new country. So, let's say he immigrated into the USA and became known as Adam. You have some records in Finland, but haven't been able to find him in the USA where he's supposed to have gone. Now you've got a different name to work with, and it's entirely possible you'll find him under that variation of his name. Note that it is important to read the entire listing. Note this description, for example: AGATHA f English Pronounced: AG-a-tha Derived from the Greek adjective agathos meaning "good". Saint Agatha was a 3rd-century martyr from Sicily. After spurning the advances of a Roman official she was tortured and had her breasts cut off before being killed. The mystery writer Agatha Christie is a famous modern bearer of this name. Now, what's wrong with that listing? Well, we're told that the name is English in origin, with no other references. But when we read the description, we're suddenly informed that the word derives from the Greek, and further that Saint Agatha was a Sicilian. So now we know that the name has Sicilian and Greek roots as well - and those could be helpful clues during the research. Conniesue --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hello, I shared this info with David on the CURRIE-L and thought I should share this info with the other list. I'm looking for Malcolm M. CURRIE. The Robert below to my knowledge is not my line. I have info from the 1850 Choctaw co., MS census on Robert M. Currie married to Eliza E., children on the census were: Cyrus C. age 16, Malvina L. age 15, David B. age 11, Joseph age 9, and Mary A. age 7. Joseph would have been born about 1841, so that leaves out my Malcolm. There is another Robert Currie married to Mary Ann Gillas. They were married in Jefferson Co., MS 21 DEC 1835. There is the 1850 census info from Copiah Co., MS showing Robert and Mary with the following children: Elizabeth C. age 20, Margaret A. age 14. Daniel age 12, Neil D. age 10, Alexander age 8, Calvin age 6, Effy "I" or "J" age 2 and Robert L. age 1 month. Children all born MS, but Robert and Mary born NC. The 1860 Copiah Co., MS census shows mary as the head of the household. The children in the household are: Margaret, Daniel, Duncan (Neil D. in 1850), Alexander, Calvin, Effie, Robert (1 month old in 1850), Mary age 8, James age 5. I would say that since James was the last child and age 5 on the census, that would put Robert Currie's death between 1855-1860. Maybe my, Malcolm M. Currie b. 1841, is a nephew of Robert Currie. I'm looking for my great grandfather, Malcolm M. Currie who was born abt 1841 in amite Co., MS I think. Although, I'm not sure about that. He may have been born in the Carolinas. I haven't been able to find him on a 1850 Federal Census. He married MRS. F. D. HENDERSON,11 DEC 1867 Amite County, MS. His wife F.D.(Frances "Fanny" Day dau. of Jonathan and Eliza Ann DAY, was married to Robert Henderson in 1864 in Amite Co., MS, son of John Henderson and Arzelia Dixon. Fannie had one daughter Nannie Henderson who married a W. E. Behrens of Houston, TX. Malcolm M. Currie on the 1880 census list him as "if I read correctly", physician. He and the family moved to LA sometime after the 1885, after the birth of my grandfather who was born in amite Co., MS. I did find an online article about one of his sons, Johnson Edward Currie, which in part states: "Currie, J. P:., sheriff of Bienville parish, is a native of Mississippi, and was born Aug. 4, 1870, a son of Malcolm M. and Fannie (Day) Currie. The father, whose family were originally from North Carolina, was a graduate of the medical department of Tulane university, and practiced medicine at Concordia, La., until his death in 1889, being 49 years of age. The mother, who was a Georgian by birth, passed away in 1905." Malcolm died Friday, 5 Dec, 1890 at the residence of WE Behrens, Dr. MM CURRIE, age 49 yrs. & 9 mo. Resided in Tilden, La, which is Avoyelles Parish. Malcolm M. Currie and Fannie Day Henderson Currie had the following children: The 1880 Soundex shows that Malcolm and Fannie are still living and are the parents of 6 children: N. Henderson step dau age 14 (1866) M. A. son age 11 (1869) J. E. son age 9 (Johnson Edward) (1871) N. F. son age 7 (1873) M. E. dau age 5 (1875) G. J. son age 3 (1877) My grandfather Wayne Huff Currie was born in 1885. I wonder why there was such a long space in between G.J. 1877 and Wayne 1885? I've been looking in MS, LA, SC, NC, GA! Grandfather Malcolm where are you?!?!?!? Perhaps I should try TN! Joe etal: A long time ago Polly was a usual nick name for Mary or Margeret. Times change so maybe Tabithia too. sue
Hi... I am seeking more information on the family of John(20 May 1749 in Bertie, NC) and Polly Smith Hodges(1755). John was the father, from what I have, of William Henry Hodges. I am hoping that someone will have information on William Henry's siblings. They are: Whitmell Hodges, Jesse Hodges, Sarah Hodges, Elizabeth Rhea Hodges and Mary Hodges. I did find Whitmell and Jesse in the census but it wasn't very telling on when they were born and all. So if anyone can help me in finding information such as their birth and death dates and whether they married or not and who too, if they did. I have joined some of the NC rootsweb mailing lists but haven't received the confirmation email saying that I have joined, at least of this email. Also..what do all think of the possibility that John that married Polly is the same one who married Tabitha Little? So anyone with any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for helping if anyone can. Stephanie Grohol
