    1. EARLY FRANKLIN COUNTY MARRIAGES
    2. My Hancock ancestors settled on land along the Tar River in the area of King's Creek, Buffalo Creek, and Anderson's Creek, in that portion of Granville County that became Bute in 1764 and Franklin in 1778. John Hancock was deeded 100 acres on the S side of Hawtree Creek 25 Mar 1749. On 8 Oct 1764 Samuel Hancock bought from Thomas Smith 575 acres in Bute County. On 8 Feb 1768 Samuel Hancock, Jr., bought an additional 58 acres in Bute County from Thomas Smith. On 10 May 1774 Bute County granted to Samuel Hancock, Jr., the administration of the estate of Samuel Hancock, Sr., deceased. Other neighbors along the Tar River were Thomas Tharrington, Thomas Person, Benjamin Person, Thomas Turner, James Brantley, Thomas Bird, Benjamin Bird. Samuel Hancock, Jr., and Mildred Dawson were married 1758 in Virginia. They had at least 8 children that grew up in Bute and Franklin and married in Franklin between 1780 and 1800. I am looking for marriage records for Martin Hancock who married Elizabeth (?) abt. 1780; William who m. (?); Simon who m. (?); and Dawson who m. Sarah "Sallie" Harris abt. 1800. This one may have been in Montgomery County. I am also interested in Wesley Hancock who was born 1788 in Franklin and m. abt. 1816 to (?). All of these folks, along with numerous other families, ended up in Wilson, TN. I would appreciate any suggestions that might help me find these marriage records. Thank you. Arvil Hancock in CA

    1. John YOUNG in 1790 Census Franklin Co. NC
    2. I'm wondering if the John YOUNG listed in the 1790 census of Franklin County, NC could possibly be my ancestor of the same name. My John YOUNG was born about the 1760s in VA or NC; married Susan Elizabeth PARKER; and somewhere in NC during the 1780s had children Sarah, Bartheny, and possibly Betsey. John's brother Richard (born about 1766) may also have been living with the family or nearby. About 1795 John and Richard YOUNG moved to Greenville District, SC. Does anyone have information about the John YOUNG shown in the 1790 census of Franklin County, NC? Bruce Nichols Mapmaker3@aol.com

    1. Wood Families: Bute, Franklin, and Warren NC 1750-1790
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I am trying to sort out the early [c1750-1790] Wood families of Granville, Bute, Warren and Franklin Counties NC. Accordingly, I would appreciate any help in confirming the following: 1. John Wood. John Wood who married Ann Britain. John is reported to have died in Bertie County c1750, and in Granville County c1768. When and where did John die? 2. Britain Wood. Britain is evidently the son of John and Ann (above), he doesn't seem to be enumerated on any of the early censuses; but is of record as having sworn an oath of allegiance to North Carolina in Bute County, c1775. Also having sworn the oath at the same time (sworn before Captain Matthew Thomas) are a James Wood, a John Wood and a William Wood. It should be noted that Bennett Wood was also a Captain and taking oaths in his own right in another area of Bute County, so is could be that the this James, John and William are related to Britain and not Bennet or Penuel or the other descendants of William Wood. Question, the other Woods enumerated with Britain his brothers or perhaps his sons? And, does anyone have any idea of who Britain's children might be? 3. Henry Wood. This Henry appears to have died c1782 as Warren County Court Records for February 1783 indicate: (1) Isaac Wood (age 6 next June, son of Henry Wood) bound to Henry Wood until the age of 21. This is either a mistake in the transcriptions, or the adult Henry is perhaps the same Henry enumerated in the 1786 Warren County entries. Isaac is seemingly again mentioned in the February 1787 Warren Court Records (wherein he is referred to as an orphan age 11) when he is bound to Sterling Talley to learn to be a carpenter. (2) James Wood (age 4 next April, son of Henry Wood) bound to Jesse Ellis until the age of 21. This James is seemingly again mentioned in the February 1788 Warren Court Records (wherein he is referred to as age 16, an orphan of Henry Wood, dec’d) when he bound to William Ellis to learn to be a planter. Any ideas if this Henry descended from the Britain Wood family, or the Bennett-Penuel Wood family? 4. Jonathan Wood. Jonathan Wood is enumerated in an early 1786 Warren County census, as well references in the Warren County Minutes to the Court Pleas and Quarter Sessions for 1780-1786 (which I have not read). There are some other Wood references as follows: a. Britain and James Wood are mentioned in a 1780 Franklin County NC land transaction. They were living adjacent to a Micajah Yarbrough. b. On March 14, 1780, in Franklin County, James Wood sold 100 acres to an Amos Smart. This land was adjacent to that of Britain Wood. The land in question was on the "Mireprong Branch and the Sliding Rock Branch," although there is no indication of what they "branch from." c. In 1771 and 1773 Bute, a Robert and a Henry -- presumably the Henry who died and who left orphans James and Isaac are enumerated. d. In 1816 Franklin, there is a record of a "deed of gift" to his daughter Martha Leonard. No indication of who Mr. Leonard, presumably Martha's husband, might be. e. In 1823 Franklin, there is record of a bill of sale from Green Wood of Franklin to Newton Wood of Wake County NC. Green Wood was seemingly a fixture in Franklin for many years. He is enumerated on the Franklin War of 1812 Muster Rolls, as well as on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Franklin Censuses. I also believe he is the same Green who is enumerated on page 161 of 1810 Rutherford NC Census. Also enumerated on page 161 of 1810 Rutherford is a Jonathan Wood, a William Wood, Sr., and a William Wood Jr. Perhaps this is the same Jonathan in number 4 above. Question: is Newton Wood Green's son? In 1850 Franklin, Greene indicates his age as 70 (bNC), and living in his household (all Wood surnames) are a William 32 NC; Bennett 29 NC; Ellen, female, 25 NC; and Allison, male, 19 NC. Who is Green's father? There are some others: the Hardy Wood (b NC c1790) and his wife Nancy of Franklin county; the Michael and Philemon who show up on a 1786 Warren county enumeration; the Allen who seems to be in Bute c1800. In any event, I will appreciate any information or comments. Thanks. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

Sometimes, a son-in-law was referred to as a son. Are you aware of any of this WOOD family who may have gone to N.GA? I have a Thomas WOOD (d.abt.1827) and and his wife, Mary, with children Phoebe T. (b.1811); Daniel A. (b.1815); Washington M.; Louise McKenzie (b.1814); Martha Elizabeth; Ann L.G.; Lucretia Ellen (b.1816); Lauring L.; William Lewis (b.1823); and Thomas Russell J. (b.1827). They are my 3rd g-grandparents. Their dau., Phoebe T. (b. in GA) and her husband, Levi BAKER (b. in Franklin Co., NC) are my 2nd g-grandparents. Thanks, and good luck on your research! Pam

    1. Bennett Wood (son of William) d. Warren NC c1790
    2. Brett F. Woods
    3. I am attempting to delineate the family of Bennett Wood (b c1735?), the son of William Wood (b1711? dc1770 NC) who presumably died in Warren County NC. William, along with his sons Penuel, Bennett, William Jr., and John, appear in numerous land transactions, first in VA, then just across the state line in what was originally Bute County NC. To do so, I have attempted to put together a rough timeline of the family’s movements. As indicated by the entry in Lunenburg County Deed Book 1, page 113, on April 2,1746 William purchased I 00 acres on the south side of Roanoke River from John and Katherine Shearmon and Katherine. The land was in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia and William paid 30 pounds for the acreage. In "Sunlight on the Southside" book List of Tithes, Lunenburg Co., VA 1748-1783, William is enumerated in 1748. In 1750, William and "Pennuwell" and listed together; and in the 1751 enumeration, William and Penuel Wood are both listed with Penuel noted to be William's son. As indicated by the entry in Lunenburg County Deed Book 3, page 3, on January 2, 1752, William sold his 100 acres on the south side of Roanoke River to Sherwood Buggs for 70 pounds. William's wife, Mary, also signed the deed. It should be noted that William's Roanoke River property was probably not over 20 miles from the Granville County, North Carolina, where William is next found on a "List of Earliest Inhabitants of Granville County, NC." The "list" is actually a muster roll of a regiment of militia under the command of Colonel William Eaton as taken at a general muster on October 8, 1754. There were a total of 734 men in the regiment. William and Penuel are enumerated in the 97-man company of Captain John Glover. William's final enumeration is on page 5 of the 1755 Granville County, NC Tax list. Also enumerated with him are his sons: Penuel, John and William, Jr. 15 Oct 1770 - Penuwell Wood to Bennett Wood - sale of land adj. to William Wood and said Bennett Wood - witness: George Tucker. (Abstracts from Bute Co., NC Will Books - 1764-1779) 1771 - Bennet Wood enumerated on 1771 Bute County Tax List. Other Wood enumerations in 1771 Bute: Anne, Henry, John, Robert, William, Sr., and William. 1773 - Bennet Wood enumerated on 1773 Bute County Tax List. Other Wood enumerations in 1773 Bute: Anne, Henry, John, Robert, William, Sr., and three Williams. 8 July 1775 - Bennett Wood mentioned in Bute County NC Safety Committee Meeting Minutes 1775 - 1776. (Appendix I, The Early Masons in Bute County, North Carolina) 1776 - Bennett Wood again mentioned Bute County NC Safety Committee Meeting Minutes (1776). "Agreeable to Resolve Acts of the Congress, the Committee proceeding to appoint officers for the Militia: Bennett Wood, Capt.; David Turner, Left.; Wood Mallone, Ensign May 1778 Court - Will of John Morey mentions Jemima Tucker, Bennitt Wood, Aaron Shearin, Lewis Tucker, Henry Shearin. (Abstracts from Bute Co., NC Will Books - 1764-1779) 1779 - Bute County NC dissolved, became Franklin and Warren Counties. 1782 to 1783 - Revolutionary War Service: Pierce's Register. Reference: North Carolina State Records, Clark, Vol. XVI, 1782-1783, page 177, Name and Rank: Wood, Bennett, Pt.; Company: Bacot's; Period of Service: 18 mo[?]; Occurrences: Mustd Dec. '82, Dischgd 13 Dec. '83. [I believe this is the Lieutenant Samuel Bacot (1745-95) who was imprisoned at Camden, and with thirty captives, while being removed to the “Black Hole,” Charleston, where smallpox was raging, overcame the guard and escaped. He served in General Francis Marion's brigade. Bacot was born and died in South Carolina, and is buried in Darlington County.) 1786 - Bennett Wood enumerated on page 2 (Undesignated District) of the Warren County NC State Census. Other Wood enumerations in 1786 Warren: Henry, page 2 (Undesignated District); Jonathan, page 2 (Moses District); Michal, page 1 (Undesignated District); Mysel, page 2 (Weathers District); Phillemon, page 2 (Weathers District); and William, page 2 (Twilleys District). 1790 - Bennett Wood enumerated on page 78 of the 1790 Warren County NC Census [02-01-05-00-00]. Other Wood enumerations in 1790 Warren: Micsell, page 78 [01-00-00-00-00]; and Elizabeth, page 79 [00-00-03-00-00]. Wood enumerations in nearby 1790 Franklin County: Brittin, page 61 [01-04-03-00-00]; James, page 61 [01-00-03-00-00]; and William, page 61 [01-04-04-00-00]. Bennett Wood appears to have died in Warren County sometime after 1790, and as for his descendants, he is said to have had as many as ten or more male heirs: Bennett Jr.; James, Phillemon, William, Henry, Michael, John, etc., Jonathan, Brittain, Green, perhaps some others. One final oddity that surfaced during my initial search of Granville/Bute records is an entry in the Deeds of Bute NC, Volume A, 1764-1766. On page 284 the following is abstracted. “Allen Mon(t)joy & wife Mary ‘to our loving son William Wood.’ 3 July 1765. ‘For natural love and good will,’ 280 A in the fork & on the south branch of Icing Glass Creek…..” This goes on with the witnesses, but I haven’t a clue who Allen Montjoy might be, unless he adopted William very early on, when he married William’s mother. Or, perhaps, this could have been a little joke between William and the Montjoys, because he took care of them or something. I don’t know. Or maybe it’s another William. In any event, I would appreciate any information on any of Bennett’s children, particularly where they went and their immediate families. When I put it all together, I will, of course, post it for other Wood researchers. And feel free to correct any errors in this posting. Thanks for any comments. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

Mr. Phillips writes that for many years it was the custom of the townsfolk to gather at the cemetery on a Saturday in May to clean off the grounds and make ready for a memorial service. There was a great turnout of citizens, rich, poor, young, and old who would for long hours cut brush, grass, straighten stones, and repair fence lots. They would plant flowers and roses, and pull weeds. Some of the local business men worked at the task as well and hired help by offering to people who helped a chance to pay off debts in this way. It was an all day affair where picnic lunches were brought and eaten under shade trees and the people visited with one another. For years it was custom to hold a memorial service for the town's dead. A crowd would assemble at the First Baptist Church, and laden with wreaths and bouquets they would march up the hill to the cemetery and assemble under the giant cherry tree near the King lot and hear the sermons by the town's clergy or a eloquent speech by a local orator which was usually a lawyer, and a bit of poetry reading. Lovely idea to me and I can just picture this in my mind of something so nice that happened so long ago. --part1_e2.95bf7d5.26e13178_boundary--

    3. In a GEDCOM, on another web-site, this man is attributed to have been born in Franklin Co., about 1800. Parents were Vinson Sanders and Win(i)fred Cooley. A man with a similar name (b. 12-25-1791) was found in Perry Co., Alabama, in a (second?) marriage (no date of wedding given), and the bride was Rachel T. Rachel is thought to be a member of the Tubb family, also born in (somewhere), NC, on 9-4-1793. This couple had a son, George William Sanders, b. in Perry, ca. 1838. Can anyone who is looking at this message certify, either way, whether or not these Sherrod Sanders data describe the same man?? Most difficult to determine for me, and I need your help!! Thanks.
