    3. Howdy, I don't know, ya'll tell me. The files are awful big, over 3 Mb each. You can read them well, but they are a monster download, especially on modems. Would you like me to, in general, make the files smaller, or do you like to read them in larger print as they are? You can always download them and reduce the size, or print them to a single page. Let me know. I need to come up with an over-all policy for future posting. Find this issue at the Project website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~freshnup/markmurph/ -- Mark A. Murphy

    3. Howdy ya'll, I spent yesterday gleaning the FHL films I ordered: 1. Murphy Family Papers (Richard of Surry Co.) 2. Surry Co., VA Deeds, wills, inventories, etc., 1645-1686 Though interesting, they turned up very little on Murphy lines, in my opinion. The family papers were just a typed collection of someone's ideas on Richard, most could have been tradition or fable, absolutely no sources or references listed, some transcriptions of descendent documents, fairly disappointing. The Surry book was exciting, though straining to the eyes. It also contained some extraneous court records. I found no Murphy (or variation thereof), but the following information may be helpful to some on the lists I'm emailing herein. Whereas I have heretofore been unable to locate copies of original documents, mentions of hereditiments and appurtences were contained viz \to wit\ No William Bird mentioned (I'm not familiar with his timeline; who was his father?) No Murphy mentioned up through 1686. No Bird mentioned 1648-1677. Jno. Bird, 14 Sep 1677, appointed his wife An. Bird atturn? exc. Jno. Vincent Will, 6 May 1679 Thomas Bird bought land from Thos. Busby, 4 Sep 1680 Jno. Vinson bought cow & calf, 10 Jun 1681. Also listed here as Jno. Vincent. River Jordan, Thomas Crews & William Crews, tythables list, 10 Jun 1683 Thomas & Phebe Crews. Also, for you Franklin Co. folks, notice a lot of the same surnames here as there. Robert Ruffin, Nicholas Perry, Robert House, Jno. Battle, Wm. Upchurch for Mich. Upchurch. Also a couple of names for my Funny list: Eliza Blow and Law Chickin. ---- Hey John Goebel, I lost your email. What do you think about Bird? (not Chickin) -- Mark A. Jehoiakim McJocktin, per act of Congress of 26th March, 1790 120 ..... ***** >From the Richmond Gazette of August 31. A Caution to the Public, A YOUNG and genteel looking Frenchman, professing himself a warm Aristocrat, and claiming high blood, took up residence for some days past in the principal tavern in this city. During this time he lived in the most luxurious and voluptuous manner, and so far infatuated himself in the good graces of the boarders and other, that he borrowed clothes and money from several under the premise of returning them on the arrival of his servant; at length, on Monday morning, his patience being exhausted, he decamped a la fourdine, and was on that day seen on his march on foot to Petersburg, supposed on his route to Charleston. He wore a blue coat lined with scarlet, the other parts of his dress he will have an opportunity of varying as he made sufficient provision for that purpose here. He is in stature about five feet ten inches, well made, walks very erect, and of a darkish complexion, has passed under different names, principally St. HELEIRE. (The same person left this town about the 1st inst. for Edenton, from whence he took a French leave, afther tarrying a few days;- having been guilty of similar shameful practices both here and there as those above described.) ***** RESPECT TO RULERS. A RESPECT to rulers is the virtue of a patriot; but it ought to have its limits. If it degenerates into blind fervility and extravagant flattery, it injures the cause of liberty, and degrades the character of freemen.... ***** To the Officers of the late Continental Line of the State of North- Carolina. GENTLEMEN, I CONCEIVE it my duty through the channel of this Gazette to advise you, that there are in my possession, a Circular Letter from the Committe[sic] of the late Continental Line of the state of Massachusetts, and other papers of an important nature to the interests of the old Continental Army, - one of the principal objects of which is, to solicit our concurrence with the measures they, as well as the Officers of the other states, have thought advisable to pursue, to obtain a discharge of a just debt yet due the Continental Army, and unprovided for by Government, to which no other persons, can have any pretence, founded in reason and justice, but the late soldiery of the same. In pursuit of this object I can imagine no other method so likely to answer the end, as the Calling a Convention of Officers, to hold [consideration so?] the papers aforesaid may [be rescinded?]. You are therefore requested to appear [at the?] Wake Court-house, on the 8th of November next, when I propose the honour of having before you those [intended?] communications. Give me leave to observe, that those papers came to me on a supposition that I was the next senior Officer of the Line to Gen. CLERK, to whom they were first presented, and who directed that they should be transmitted to me, as the misfortune of his blindness prevented him from using those exertions that his disposition prompted. Hearing tha Gen. ARMSTRONG is dead, I concluded the urgency of the occasion required dispatch, and have therefore adopted this method. I am, Gentlemen, With sentiments of esteem, Your most humble servant, H. Murfree. Murfreesborough, Sept. 4, 1792. [end of excerpts]

    3. Carol, I think I may have a Gus Driver. My Great grandfather, Fenner Daniel Driver (1872-1954), had Gus Driver listed as father on his death certificate. I've not been able to find anything on Gus, Augustus, etc. A granddaughter gave the info for the death certificate. I wonder if maybe it was Guy instead of Gus. Do you know where in Bunn Guy is buried? My parents still live in Franklin County. Have you tried looking for Colonel Driver? Maybe they mispelled it as Kenneurll. Just a thought. <br><br><br>Lisa C. 1. [NCFRANKL] Richard Murphy in 1690s Surry Co VA?
    2. Mark Murphy
    3. I've perused the index of "Surry County, Virginia Court Records" by Weynette Parks Haun, 1652-1663 Book I; Book II (Deed Book I) 1664-1671; Book IV (Part II: Order Book) 1682-1691; Book V 1691-1700 Court Records; & Book VI 1700-1711 Court Records. I can find no Murphy, Merfree, or any other variation. However, Book III (Part I: Order Book) 1672-1682, had listed a "Mr. Merfee" for p. 33. I've seen a lot of contention about Richard Murfee(+var) in Surry Co. VA in the late 1600s, who supposedly married a Mary Elizabeth Byrd. At least one son married into the Byrd family (again, supposedly). One thing for sure, several of the later 1700s and early 1800 descendants have given names of Bird and Byrd. We know from Will Books & Albermarle Parish records that Simon I (d. abt 1754), Richard II and others were in early 1700s Surry. Son of Simon I, Arthur, settled in Franklin Co. NC., others in SC. Richard I supposedly ran a river crossing boat to William Byrd's land (awaiting documents on this). Other stories abound for Richard (b. abt 1670?), but has anyone seen any original documents (or copies) relating to him? One lady told me she has seen a microfiche from St. John's Parish in Dublin, Ireland that has Richard Murphy being kidnapped around the late 1600s. Anyone seen this? I've also seen this: from Complete Book of Emigrants 03 Aug 1683 . . . apprenticed in Middlesex to go for four years to Maryland, by the (ship) Content, Mr. William Johnson: . . . Richard MURPHY of London, Merchant. 04- 06 Sept 1699 The following were apprenticed in Liverpool to Richard MURPHY to go to VA by the Lamb of Dublin, said Richard Murphy master . . . (thanks Beverly) It is possible that Richard I was too poor to own land and stayed out of trouble, quite anonymous in Surry Co. If he later married into William Byrd's family, then he would have been quite well off indeed. Any thoughts or leads would be appreciated. -- Mark A.
