I believe this record confuses the Arthur b. prob. in Surry Co. VA with his son Arthur b. in Franklin Co. NC Freshly posted at the Project: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~freshnup/markmurph/ -- Mark A. Murphy
I did something stupid. I received an e-mail and I don't know who that had my Fortunatus Pitman and his brother Hudson Pitman in their query. I deleted it somehow. Now I could cry. They were either in Caswell Co., N.C. or Northumberland, Va. I know they were both places. It was around 1790 or 1810. Thought maybe you would have records of them. Frances Ann Pitman of Caswell Co., N.C. married William Jeffreys (Jeffries) and lived in Northumberland, Va. I have also heard reference to the Pitman's being Cherokee. I am signed up on the Pitman mailing list and don't know if I received the e-mail from that. Wish I could retrieve that e-mail. Thanks, Jo Clark
Freshly posted at the Project website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~freshnup/markmurph/ The will of Richard Murfee, 1789, Southampton Co. VA. Thanks to Betty Chandler, I am now moving into researching this county. I've noticed lots of folks came to Bute/Franklin Co. NC from Surry/Southampton Co. VA. Also, Betty's work indicates that Richard Murphy I may have come to this county in late 1600s. I've ordered lots of books & microfilm. I just hope Southampton wasn't one of the "burned" counties during the 2 wars. Let's rock! -- Mark A. Murphy
Would like information on this family. They were from Franklin Co., NC. and married in Edgecombe, N.C. in 1773. I know they had 1 daughter Gille that married a Alston. Gille named one of her sons, William Hudson. So was her dad William Hudson Jeffreys ? My GGG Grandfather was William Hudson Jeffreys(various spellings). I am up against a brick wall.... Thank you for any information. Jo Clark
Hello All, I am new to this list and would like to know more about the Denton families of this area. Mark-- Thanx for the offer to check the indexes of these two books. You're a peach!! The surnames I'd like you to check are: FIKE(s)-FYKE(s) ROE-ROWE-ROW-RAU HUCKABY-HUCKABEE-HUCKABAY-HOCKABEE--any name close phonetically will do. Donna I have the indices from the following two books & will do surname lookups for a limited time, just for you fine Franklin Co. folks. As you know, Franklin was once part of Granville & Bute in these time frames. "Abstracts of Early Deeds of Granville Co. I got a huge response for lookups! I didn't know that many subscribed to this list. Due to the large number, I ask that you please limit your requests as much as reasonable. Also common surnames are a bit difficult, even in the mid 1700s. Please don't ask for "all the Smiths" and that kind of thing. I'll try to do what I can, so please be patient. thanks -- Mark A. Murphy

Don't know if this interests you or not. This shows that this William Bird had father Thomas and mother Mary, I think. Did the daughter of this Wm. marry Simon Murfee? I've found no Murphy on Surry Co. Court orders microfilm 1671-1691, 1691-1713, 1713-1718, 1741-1744 (also important to note). Lots of Birds, Grays, & others later found in Franklin Co. NC such as Battle, Perry, etc. My gggUncles were Bird & Gray Murphy in Franklin Co. NC.
