Karmella, >I need a little assistance in interpreting a census >page (copy) I received: 1880 Edgecombe Co., Upper >Fishing Creek Township, town of Whitakers, pg 137C. >I am having trouble reading the names in household >#118 from the copy I have. Could someone who has quick >access to this census transcribe the 7 names for me? >The surname looks like "Hill" but I am not sure. I'm looking at that page in the census, and boy, I can see why you can't read it! The first names are pretty easy, but the surname had me stumped for awhile. I could say with 99% certainty it wasn't Hill, because there's definitely about 5 letters in that name, and one is a definite "g." I scrolled back a little until I found someone with the same last name, and you can tell better from that family that it is most probably "Knight." The first names are Kader, Matilda, Richard, Thomas, Romulus, George, and Alla. Hope that helps. I don't know anything about the colored school and church except that the map tells me they were there, but I'm going to forward your message to a lady who has lived in Whitakers a long time, and maybe she can help.
