My 5th great was John Davis Sr. I presume he was born somewhere in Virginia around 1720 and died in Edgecombe Co. N.C. in 1799 leaving a will. I first find him in records of 1742/43 where he received a land grant in same county around the Tyancocoa Swamp area. This is the first entry I can verify it as being my ancestor. His wife at one time is referred to as Lucreha(possiby Lucretia) and later referred to as Ann in the will. I feel as though it is the same person because he has 2 daughters named Ann and Leucresy. He had 2 sons I know of which were James and John Jr. my 4th great. He bought considerable amounts of land around Contentnea Creek in lower Edgecombe. In his will an Aaron Davis is the executor and I cannot figure how Aaron is kin to John. It does not indicate. Write back I would appreciate anything greatly. I have researched this family for years and am still at a standstill. One other thing I feel as though Margaret Shaw was his mother. In a record of 1755 she le! aves all of her "goods and chattels" to John and states that he is her son. It seems almost 90% of land transactions had a Ruffin family member as a witness. This is one way I could follow my John and not get mixed up with any other John Davises. This case was true with the Margaret Shaw record also. Sincerely R. G. Davis Manchester TN. P.S. If siblings could be found and proved to be this would be the link,or more info on Aaron Davis or Margaret Shaw.
