    3. Roy, I can tell you that the only Job Hunter on the 1790 census is in the Newbern District of Dobbs County. He had three white males 16 years and upwards (including himself), four white males under 16 years, and three females. There's also one in Bertie County on the incomplete 1787 State census, and one on a Warren County tax list in 1818. According to the N.C. Marriage Bonds database, a Job Hunter married a Martha Hardey in Bertie County April 18, 1770. A Job Hunter also witnessed two wills in Onslow County in the 1740s and 50s. Hope that helps, Traci ___________________________________________________ From: Roy P Hunter <rghunter3@juno.com> To: NCEDGECO-L@rootsweb.com I am looking for info on JOB HUNTER and his son JOB born abt 1780 and married to REBECCA ?????. Roy Hunter3 <>< rghunter3@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ Mayme, John and Sarah Stokes are most likely connected; in the Edgecombe deed books, this couple and Jones Stokes all have land transactions with Christopher Guin and Yelverton. Unfortunately, these folks don't seem to have left a will here that would make any relationships clear. But, all is not lost! More digging in the deeds turns up a land transaction referring to Jones as "Jones Stokes of Surry Co., VA." So I went to my Surry County will book and found this: "Stokes, Silvanus: Leg. - to my eldest son, Jonas Stokes, my plantation, grist mill, mill stones, and 565 acres of land, houses, orchards, where I lie on the upper part; and at his death to my grandson, Jones Stokes, with one negro, and 100 acres of land, Jonas Stokes being son of my natural son, Jones Stokes. [a little confusing; there may be a typo or misreading of original, etc.] To son Silvanus Stokes, two negroes. Daughter, Martha Ezell. Grandson, Marcus, son of my son Silvanus Stokes, 400 acres of land, the lower part. To Silvanus Stokes, son of my son, Jones Stokes, one negro. To Hamlin Stokes, son of my son, Jones Stokes, one negro. To Jones Stokes, son of my son, Jones, one negro. To grandson, Silvanus Stokes, son of my son, Silvanus Stokes, one negro. To my granddaughter, Agnes Freeman, daughter of my son, Hamlin Stokes, one negro. To granddaughter, Agnes Ezell, bed, etc. To sons all the rest of the est. to be equally divided. Made: 18 May, 1742. Prob.: 21 March, 1748. Wit.: Samuel Stokes, John Stokes, David Stokes. Book 9, page 604." Whew! Ya got all that??? Goodness, you'd think they would have tried to come up with different names. One of the Edgecombe deeds mentions "Jones Stokes the elder" which goes along with him having a son of the same name. I would suggest also that you try to get ahold of the book Register of Albemarle Parish, Surry and Sussex Counties, 1739-1778. The index is filled with references (too many to put here!) to the Stokes surname, with a lot of Jones, Silvanus, etc. references. Many of them are records of birth, death, marriage, etc. Example: "James, son of Jones Stokes and wife Anne; born Feb. 10, 1743/4; christened March 25, 1744; godparents Wm. Ezzell, Wm. Rolland, Cecilia Stokes." So anyway, Surry County is the place to look! Traci the Librarian _______________________________________________________ From: "maymemagic@texoma.net" <gmayme@texoma.net> To: NCEDGECO-L@rootsweb.com Any information on two Stokes men mentioned in early Edgecombe county records? Jones Stokes and Sylvanius Stokes had land transactions 1739-1740..Tar Riv, Deep Creek area. Christopher Guin and John Yelverton were mentioned. Where could this group have migrated from? Are the John and Sarah Stokes who are in the same time, place frame connected to them? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Mayme Porter ______________________________ R.G., Sorry, I tried too and can't find a relationship mentioned between Aaron and John, although I did find where John sold Aaron land. There are Aarons in several different places on the 1800 and 1810 census, but not in Edgecombe. If you could figure out ages, maybe you could make some educated guesses. Traci the Librarian __________________________________________________________ From: "mujahed99" <gomez9399@charter.net> To: NCEDGECO-L@rootsweb.com My 5th great was John Davis Sr. I presume he was born somewhere in Virginia around 1720 and died in Edgecombe Co. N.C. in 1799 leaving a will. I first find him in records of 1742/43 where he received a land grant in same county around the Tyancocoa Swamp area. This is the first entry I can verify it as being my ancestor. His wife at one time is referred to as Lucreha(possiby Lucretia) and later referred to as Ann in the will. I feel as though it is the same person because he has 2 daughters named Ann and Leucresy. He had 2 sons I know of which were James and John Jr. my 4th great. He bought considerable amounts of land around Contentnea Creek in lower Edgecombe. In his will an Aaron Davis is the executor and I cannot figure how Aaron is kin to John. It does not indicate. Write back I would appreciate anything greatly. I have researched this family for years and am still at a standstill. One other thing I feel as though Margaret Shaw was his mother. In a record of 1755 she le! aves all of her "goods and chattels" to John and states that he is her son. It seems almost 90% of land transactions had a Ruffin family member as a witness. This is one way I could follow my John and not get mixed up with any other John Davises. This case was true with the Margaret Shaw record also. Sincerely R. G. Davis Manchester TN. P.S. If siblings could be found and proved to be this would be the link,or more info on Aaron Davis or Margaret Shaw. ______________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
